View Full Version : Ridiculously Bad Comp Experiences

So I jsut thought this story was so sad taht i had to share.
My teacher recently competed at Heritage with a few of her older students. She had two older gentlemen that both had to perform and then start their rhythm (I think?) heats less than 5 minutes after the performances finished. So she had about 4 minutes to change her costume from ballgown to rhythm costume.
Right before she went on the floor, she went into the bathroom to get everything set up: dress arranged on the hanger, unzipped, everything within easy reach, etc., because she had no one there to help her, so she wanted to be able to change as quickly as possible. She was gone for about 10-15 minutes, performing with her student, and when she sprinted back to the bathroom to change.....yup, it was gone. All of her clothes, costume, the whole deal. Thank god she'd left her other shoes back at the table.
Sooooo she ended up doing her rhythm heats in a ballgown that night. She had another dress back up at the room that she used the next day, but she said that it was the worst thing to ever happen to her.
Granted, yes she maybe shouldn't have left her dress in the bathroom, but still...I think it was tragic.
So, anyone else have horrible competition stories? Sorry if there's another topic like this already, I DID search! Haha.
Anyways. Just thought I'd share because it was so horribly tragic. Blegh.

Wow! Good luck to the person who tries wearing the dress, it won't take long to figure out where she got it.

Well, this one isn't so bad, but I was warming up this morning at a comp and was dancing to waltz music, going backwards by myself. I stepped on my float and slipped and went right down on my butt.
I'm fortunate that I've never had anything lost or stolen. I did break a heel (just the plastic tip part came off, breaking away from the nail in the heel) at my last comp, though, and had to dance my second set of dances in brand-new unbroken-in shoes.

Yeah, we've been checking eBay.
I've never actually fallen at a comp, thank god. I would probably cry.
Though I did nearly break my teacher's nose during a hustle heat! I'm honestly shocked it didn't bleed everywhere.

Someone else here thought their dress was stolen (janathome, maybe?) and it turned out someone else grabbed it in error...I guess I like to think maybe this happened to your teacher, but probably not. Major bummer. Yeah, someone should be feeling really good about themselves....

But I do think that is a really good idea.

am still having a hard time imaginining this...I wonder also if your teacher might check the two dress vendors who were closest to the bathroom to see if someone accidentally thought they were items from the rack that just belonged back there...maybe check with them as well?...yeow...its just so hard to imagine given the cost of even going to heritage...and given how small the competitive dance community is....

My partner and I had a really bad experience at MAC this year. Not as bad as having her dress stolen or anything, but it made a weekend we were looking forward to a big bummer. First, our plane can't take off because of excessive air traffic over NYC (2 hr delay), then our plane can't take off because of excessive air traffic over DC (another 2 hr delay), then our plane can't take off because one of the lavatories was discovered to be broken (2 hr delay) all while we're sitting in the plane... actually could have almost driven to Manhattan in the time that we were delayed plus the actual flight time. So we missed PreChamp Latin and MoS Latin which we really wanted to dance in (which is an oddity for us to actually want to dance latin). We make it to the ballroom with barely enough time to get dressed for MoS Standard, didn't do great since we basically walked on the floor as we came into the building. Worst part was we had to bring all of our luggage from the plane to the comp venue. So next day, we go do the team match and that was pretty fun I guess. Go back to the hotel. Realize Kayla's wallet is missing, so we look all over. Go back to the venue and ask around, no one has seen it... except when I ask some of those youth dancer guys in the dressing room if they've seen it they laugh and say they wouldn't tell me even if they had seen it (prime suspects for poking through our stuff the previous night). So after all this, we bail on dancing PreChamp Standard since basically we were freaking out that Kayla wouldn't be able to fly back to Raleigh without an ID. K, this is long enough... to cut to the end, we were both able to fly back to Raleigh, a credit card short and a hundred or so dollars poorer.

Yes it was me who had my gown come up missing, it was taken by mistake and it was returned to me. But mine was in a black Dore gown bag that many people own and I understood how it could of happened.
This person not only had thier costume missing but the accessories too. That does not sound too good. I agree that the dance community is a small one, and many of us travel many states to compete..... I just dont think anyone would be safe wearing a stolen dress at any comp.... I sure hope it turns up. I know that horrible sinking feeling and it stinks!
Larinda McRaven
03-11-2007, 06:19 PM
It is uncommon but not unheard of... for someones things to go missing. We are a small community but by no means perfect.
A former US Champion had his suitcase and belongings stolen out of the changing room. My ex's favorite Jacket suit was stolen at Classique one year. My shoes disappeared from under the table in CT recently. A female smooth competitors dress was stolen several years back in Las Vegas. I have had dress bags leave without me in California. My make-up case is often rifled through (I am sure by people desperate for hairspray or castor oil or shoe brushes) when I leave it unattended in back hallways by the on-deck area... the list goes on and on.
It sucks but what can you do? Just be more vigilant next time. It is too bad for your teacher, it would have been easier if someone had been there to help her and hold her things for her.

I suppose that dresses are a but trickier to wear, but a suit or shoes are almost impossible to spot. You know how many hundreds of Supadance 1029s are out there?
Laura

Yeah, stuff does go "missing." I know a pro who had a shirt stolen at a comp, right out of their tote bag in the dressing room, where it was left between rounds.
I'm sure you've thought of this, but did you check with Housekeeping at the hotel? Maybe a maid was cleaning the bathroom and picked it all up and took it to Housekeeping's lost and found. That happened to a cell phone of mine...I had left it on a table in the lobby of a hotel, and the next time someone from housekeeping came through (about five or ten minutes later) they picked it up, figuring it was better that they grab it and hold in the lost and found for safekeeping than just to leave it there in case I came back.

Oh definitely, especially if there are youngsters around. A few years ago a thread went around on another board where some teenage competitors were taking about how they'd steal/hide/throw away each other's belongings in an effort to psyche each other out. One poster even went as far to say that their coach told them to do it....

I walked off the floor after my first round in NYC one year and saw a half dozen or so young girls, ready to go out for the youth latin, passing around my can of hairspray. I walked right up to them, took it out of their hands, said politley "Thanks for sharing!" and walked away. What can you do, sometimes people ack like jackasses. Yikes. I usually leave my stuff in a closed bag on a chair near the floor. For time being I have only one dress, so nobody can steal it as long as I am wearing it, and I don't leave my things in the dressing room, but while I am dancing, my bag usually holds a wallet with all stuff that normally goes into a wallet.

Our studio manager could have had a bad experience at a FADS competition. His wallet fell out in the men's room. Foretunately for him, the person who found it (me) was honest and he had it back before he even knew it was gone.

We were travelling to Chicago for a UC event. Me, my DH and his competition partner. DH and I drove, while his partner flew with a few others from our group. To make a long story short, DH's comp partner's luggage arrived in Chicago the day AFTER the competition ended. Her costumes, boots, makeup and everything were with her luggage. She had no clothing with her except what she was wearing.
I had brought along a dress for social dancing that worked for her to compete in and she was able to borrow boots from someone else.
I was, however, most impressed that throughout the weekend, her spirits never seemed to dampen and she and DH won their division that weekend.

Thankfully ::knocks on wood:: I have not had anything lost or stolen at a comp. However, about a year and a half ago, my partner managed to "misplace" his alarm and failed to show up for a comp, whereas I had woken up to get dressed, do my hair and makeup, and meet with the rest of my team at 4.30 am. I ended up dancing TBA all day and ending the partnership shortly afterwards.
Oh man I could keep this thread alive forever with my comp experiences. It seems that there are a lot more of those moments when you don't know the language and have no directions or information.

same here.... almost all of mine were from at least a year or more ago.... except one of my latin practice skirts getting stolen out of my bag at Yale this past year or discovering the night before that competition that my dress was far too big for me to wear (that almost caused a huge problem...) other than that, nothing major recently, but I could probly go for pages on comps further in the past... (I wouldn't recommend getting me started on those.... lol)

How sad about the stolen dress. I can't believe someone would do that. I have a bad competition story...
For my very first competition, I was dancing bronze cha cha and the floor was extremely crowded. It was a smaller floor and they had way too many couple on it. Needless to say, I was not the most aware of the people around me because I was scared to death, I was on the edge of the floor and opened out into a New Yorker. I hit a judge right in the face and gave him a bloody nose. Not surprisingly, I didn't make the next round. :( It was a good lesson on floor craft for me, though.

I danced a round at USDSC the one year I went with toilet paper stuffed in my nose because it was bleeding. I used to get spontaneous bloody noses, and while we were warming up for the Pro/Am Scholarship it started bleeding.
It's not like there was paper hanging out of my nose, but my nose did look a little misshapen from being stuffed.

*reads the entries about things being stolen* I really hate to say this but it's true - Last year when I was part of a studio performance one of my credit cards was stolen. The studio had rented out an auditorium and we all changed in the bathrooms... I really have no idea. It might not have been a dancer/friend who stole it. All I know is my credit card was GONE. Very sneaky thief didn't take anything else - was probably counting on my not noticing that particular card had gone missing. Fortunately for me, the card requires you enter the zip code for verification, so no charges were made.
Still though. Really brought things home to me. Now I leave EVERYTHING locked in the car except for costuming... which you really cannot protect. :(

I had two credit cards stolen out of my wallet at a party once. It was about 15 years ago, I was at a rave in Rhode Island. I agree that the thieves were tricky -- my wallet looked full and it seemed like all the cash was there. I did't even realize the cards were gone until the credit card company called me because their fraud alert had kicked in.
Fortunately it wasn't a big deal -- the charges got erased from my bills, and I got new cards with new account numbers issued.

I had my credit card stolen from my wallet too.. it was in vegas 2 years ago at a company party.. someone was very snicky too, I have 2 cards from the same bank, same image on each.. and one is usually behind the other in my wallet.. they only stole the card that was behind.. so I noticed only a day later.. they charged like $ in a copy center, next charge was like $950.. Thankfully I got all of them eraised from my account.. it wasn't fun...

1. All my shoes were stolen at a comp. Not just misplaced, but stolen right outa my bag of stuff. I had my shoes, in their individual shoe bags, in my larger stuff bag, of all things I brought to the comp, which was closed (not an open bag of stuff shoved in, but like tied closed). One of my team members stayed behind to watch the pile of team's stuff while the rest of us went out to grab dinner, and when we came back, I went to grab my shoes, and they were all gone, out of my bag... my smooth shoes, latin shoes, practice shoes, etc... crazy, since I have the smallest feet on the planet, and they were just Very Fines, the cheapest brand ever, but to replace them all... all my dance shoes, was quite costly.
2. On the topic of falling while dancing (not comp-related), I did fall during a practice, face down, and split my chin open.
3. On the topic of things being stolen... also not comp-related, I was at a social dance at a small local studio, that has a small close knit of dancers, my camera was taken. It was laying on the table right next to my purse... which was untouched. I've taken that camera out to sketchy salsa clubs and left it laying around, and it was taken from a small local ballroom studio filled with long term customers... and no one saw it being taken, nor does anyone know what happened to it. Notices have been posted up for reward for return of camera, and the studio owner has questioned every single customer personally, whether or not they were in attendance at that particular Friday night party or not.
But ya, I second (or third or fourth) the comment that while it's a small community, it's not perfect. Which is sad, cuz I was really upset about the shoes, someone really had to have gone digging through my bag of stuff to take those... and I cried for months about my camera. But falling and bruising or bleeding... that's just to be expected. And it's always more embarrassing than it hurts. Bruises (and even bones) heal, but embarrassment lasts as long as your memory. LOL.
Shake off the misfortunes, and Happy Dancing folks!

Whew, sorry it's taken me so long to get back to this thread. I've been out of town for awhile.
My teacher didn't have her dress insured, because really, it wasn't that expensive of a dress at all. To be honest, it wasn't that great a dress, but still, she had to dance in a ballgown.
She checked with security, housekeeping, everything - no one had seen it. Sad face.
Some of these other experiences are interesting though! Especially the one about the bloody nose (giving it to someone else) - I swear I thought I'd given my pro a bloody nose. We were doing Hustle, and he led some step that I didn't know (so what else is new) and I ended up elbowing him flat out in the nose. It was pretty bad.
However, he DIDN'T bleed! Which is VERY fortunate, seeing as he was wearing a white shirt. >_<

Who steals makeup while your are in the pissa? Geez you were probably in earshot and whoever it was must have realized that you were not that far away- You have to have some big hairy ones to do something like that!
I am sure that if she was that desperate she most likely couldn't pull off a pretty face with someone elses colors! Think Bridget Jones Diary..

When I was in Miami on a business trip 7 years ago, another person from our company warned me that I should pretty much keep my hand on my purse at all times when I am out. I guess Miami lived up to its reputation with you. I wonder if Orlando is better in this sense. I hope it is, because if I compete there, there will be a point when I will have to leave some things unattended on my table when I dance. Unless I think of a way of sticking my room key into my dress somehow. Now I have this visual of me sticking a room key into the bra cups, right between... ;)

Heritage was an active place this year. I had my cell phone stolen out of my booth while I was there. My sim card was out of it in under 10 minutes. Someone really wanted my phone. It was a Treo 650 and it has taken me this long to just get close to back to normal. Everything was in there - schedule, customers etc.
Comps always feel safe, but there are a tremendous number of non-dancers floating in ahd around. We have had a few dresses taken over the years, I had a wallet stolen, jewelry from my hotel room, a computer taken - it has taught me to be careful, unfortunately, they caught me when I was busy.
I might add that when someone has a quick change like that, they could ask one of the friendly vendor community to help out. We usually have a table with room under it for storage in an emergency. I am always glad to help if I can.

That would be a really great suggestion for comp organizers. Think about when you have to check out of your hotel before you dance and have to bring all of your stuff with you to the venue. It would keep the ballroom clear of all the stuff and be a big help.
What a good idea.

Newbie question: Do competitions not usually have a bag/clothing check?
Never saw one. There are dressing rooms, but nobody's keeping eye on the stuff you leave in there. Although, I just had this thought, if a comp is taking place in a hotel, you might be able leave things with the front desk, they usually have storage room for luggage.
I've only been to one (college comp) with a bag check. In fact the bag check was required! It certainly kept the ballroom less cluttered, but people weren't used to packing to bring in exactly what they needed and nothing more, and also there was a bit of a traffic jam at the end of the day. But given the number of people compared to the extra room in the ballroom, I thought it was a good idea.
Laura

I've seen them a couple of times at college comps, and I've seen them at USA Dance a couple of times, too.
Location of the check area seems incredibly important to its success. For instance, so few people used the one we had at Nationals last year that we ended up just closing it down. But the one at Nationals in 2003-2005 was very well located and so very well used.
I think people like to be able to get into and out of their bags easily, so that's why having it in a very convenient place is a good idea.

I walked off the floor after my first round in NYC one year and saw a half dozen or so young girls, ready to go out for the youth latin, passing around my can of hairspray. I walked right up to them, took it out of their hands, said politley "Thanks for sharing!" and walked away.
I'm glad you didn't walk back to your bag and find your identical can of hairspray sitting there. ;)

I have had a few bad experiences. At one competition I had my brand new watch that I got for Christmas stolen. It was at the bottom of a bag under a bunch of stuff and sitting on a chair under my table in the ballroom. Someone must have gone through the bag when I was dancing and made off with it. I reported it and looked everywhere. I even stayed until everyone left and the clean-up crew were done in case it was found but to no avail.
Another experience was when both my heel tips were broken off on the uneven joints of a ballroom floor at another competition. The floor had been stored in the cold and when they brought it in the sections warped in the heat. I had to finish the last three dances dancing on the nails of my heels. I sounded like Captain Hook.
At the second competition I ever did my ballroom dress came unhooked at the back and slid down. I was still covered but barely. The whole audience watched our tango to see if I was going to put on more of a show than just dancing. I never had such good contact I can tell you that for sure. I made it through but changed the dress design after that. Ah, if it were not for these embarrassing moments, then what would we have to look back and laugh at later in life.

On that subject, I was fiddling with this little digital video camera at a comp, and managed to drop one of the batteries, which promptly dissapeared into someone's tote bag full of stuff that was halfway under a table (very crowded conditions). No idea whose bag it was, but needless to say felt very odd going through it to find the battery.

Rugby, your post reminded me that once at a Collegiate comp my partner accidentally unhooked my dress during a Viennese Waltz. We have no idea how it happened...he hooked me up quickly right as the Foxtrot was starting.

That would be a really great suggestion for comp organizers. Think about when you have to check out of your hotel before you dance and have to bring all of your stuff with you to the venue. It would keep the ballroom clear of all the stuff and be a big help.
What a good idea.
Thanks, Merrylegs! :D Just trying to think of ways I could be useful at the next comp at which I volunteer.

What a shame he doesn't know how it happened. I would've liked to know how he did it. :raisebro:

Oh, I see. So even if he could remember, there'd be no point in his trying to teach me as I wouldn't be able to perform it with the same suavity. ;)
