Since it seems like we've been throwing around the names of various uncommon dances lately (the Foxy, Bossa Nova, Pachanga), I thought it would be funny for everyone to share their experiences with dances that are a bit less "run of the mill". Did you learn some interesting new dance while out social dancing? Was your instructor in a weird mood one night and decided to teach you something other than the waltz? Did you make up a dance of your own? Let's hear about it!
Although I have probably already mentioned the weird dances I know, two experiences that stick out in my head were when my instructor taught Foxy and Polka. If you care to hear more about my Foxy experience, check out the thread about Unconventional Dance Music in the Ballroom forum, or the thread titled "the foxy!!!" in this forum. As for the polka, I think both my instructor and everyone that came to practice that night were in a bit of a weird mood, which made for some interesting interpretations of the polka...there were several collisions (I got pretty good at shrieking "Watch out, Barb!" to our instructor as Dave flung me around), and several of the guys even got bold enough to roll up their pants and construct makeshift "polka hats" out of newspaper to add to the authenticity of the dance...and then there was the guy that even yodeled... Two hours later I still couldn't (and can't) do polka for the life of me, but I still have fun trying
The weirdest dance I learned outside of practice had to be the Canadian Stomp...has anyone ever heard of this??? I can't really even remember the steps...a friend of mine from gym class my sophomore year of high school added it to a dance routine we had to perform for the class. Its sort of a line dance, and it has a sort of forward "stomping" motion as well as a grapevine action. Wish I could remember more
