It would be so nice if the users here posted a photo of theimselves - ideally dancing - in the splendid photo album area. I tried to search some of the names that pop up here most often but more often than not to no avail. For me at least, a picture really does tell a thousand words and helps me remember who-is-who. Some people use there own names and have pictures posted by themselves or others. Others I have found by sleuthing - there really are some GORGEOUS people here - Please stand up and be admired! At least for the competitors I am sure that you must have one picture that you are proud of.
Along these lines, is there something about privacy here that I am not getting? I know its easier to write about some things if no one knows who you are - but eventually your ID will most likely pop out from reports at comps, contacts, partner notes etc etc. So my moniker, Elisedance reflects my real name [hey, I'll give you a clue, its not 'dance'] - though how precipitous would that have been of my parents....
And to be consistent I have posted one picture of me with my (pro) partner Chris under my signon name.

It's not so much a matter of privacy - a number of folks on the board know who I am in "real life" - its more a matter of having a picture that I want to claim. Some of us - don't have the photogenic gene.

I think it depends on the poster. Some of us compete and thus can't have as much privacy. Some posters here said they're not competing, so they obviously can have more privacy.

Then there are technology issues...I have a lot of photos from many years of me dancing, but they are prints, so I'd have to (a) find my scanner (b) hook it up (c) scan the image (d) crop/edit whatever (e) upload it...with all that, it's kind of low on my list right now.
Also, I don't feel particularly gorgeous, so I'm quite careful about what pictures I put up as I have been the subject of criticism in the past about my looks and my dancing.

Some people want to remain relatively anonymous to avoid harassment, spam, and identity theft. It's a hangover from the earlier bullletin boards/usenet, where there is little or no protection, much less moderating. There are still some BB's around and the flame wars can be spectacular. Without protections such as those DF has in place, it's fairly easy for a disgruntled geek, unhappy with something you've posted, to find and plague you. Also it can be the doorway to identity theft.
If you, or someone close to you, has ever been a target, you either quit participating in forums or quickly develop a "Nom de Web" with a linked e-mail address. It's separate from a personal or business account. You never buy anything from that account, or post anything that would lead to your true identity. It's a little safer, and it's very easy to control unwanted e-mail -- just empty the whole in-box.
The world is not as pleasant and safe as DF.

So maybe I'm being a bit foolhardy then. Too late now though - unless I unsub and resub (if those terms still mean anything - who would have thought you can show your age on the internet...). To do that I would have to tell you all who I now was - or we could make it a game. First guy to guess gets me as a dance partner (hey, it was worth a try.......).

Not worth it. As long as you don't impute irregularities of birth to other posters, misstate their mother's occupation, or disparage their dancing in terms that used to be called "vulgar" you'll probably fly under the radar.
Yeah privacy issues... I understand some people not wanting to disclose too much. It's always nice to have a place to find good advice anonymously.

Funny you should say that, because I've read that Toronto often "stands in" for New York when movies set in New York are filmed. For example, "Take the Lead" was set in N.Y. but mostly filmed, I believe, in Toronto.

In some ways its what NY would like to be - its still possible to actually buy a house downtown (I live 1 miles from the 'centre') and its really cosmopolitan with respect to its racial mix. In others its not - for example its full of torontonians! And torontonians , bless 'm, for all their positive qualities, are not NYians by any stretch of the imagination!

Its worth paying a bit more for a dress that you will feel great, beautiful in it. It will reflect in your dancing. I know for myself, competing in bodyfitness(Figure), I have paid $1500.00 for my two suits (one piece and a two piece rhinestoned suits). Both of them complimented me and when i was up there on stage, I felt like a million bucks, and looked very polished. That counted alot and reflected on my score.

definitely, when you feel good, you will look and perform better :) that's why I have it.. Oh and this one was QUITE a hassle to get.. 3 months of emails going back and forwards, lots of deciding and doubts.. etc etc.. but it was all worth it in the end, I'm in love now.. and I OWN the object of my affection.

I wish I looked good in that color but it is foul on me...
For some reason, I haven't been able to upload to the photo album in several months. I have a few pics in my album but none are of me. Here's me & Jeremy most recently ...
Jeremy and Anna were here just last weekend, ( here being Tupelo) I didn't get to come to his workshop, we were out of town.. But he is so sweet...
I just changed my picture... here's me:-D

to be fair, this photo made it look a lot darker and bluer than in person.
this is more a real color
Mmmm...positively lovely. It doesn't really seem like mint green or even Listerine green to me. More like sea green - like the waves off of Point Lobos rushing towards the shore just before they crash upon the rocks and the green disappears amidst the foam.

What a fun thread...so many attractive people! My avatar is me, and sometimes I feel a little strange about it...but not strange enough to change it. Don't have any recent shots of myself dancing, but I'm going to a country western competition this weekend to watch friends compete, and I'll try to get a pic of me social dancing (in boots, no less). If I get a decent one, I'll make it my new avatar.

I don't believe the image is rotated. It appears to me to be an upright image of her leaning back. Notice gravity pulling her hair to the bottom of the image.

Yeah, you're right, just noticed there's someone holding her, but it looks kinda weird without the lead in the picture... :)
Though it could have been a rotated shot with a really powerful fan blowing her hair parallel to the ground. :p

LOL--I actually have no photos of me dancing...all my photos are from the theatre work I've done.
But I do have a pic of myself in Much Ado doing the switches for the foxtrot sequence, with my back arched , not connected to my base, and with nothing even approximating what I would regard as a line (unless you can apply the principles of curved space to your analysis of it). Therefore, I am not posting it....

Go to 'Photo Album'

Go to the alpha listing and select a the first letter of a member's DF name
Select the member's 1st photo (or a photo)
Then you can see the Slide Show option
Select Start Slideshow and away it goesThen I tested it a little further . . . and found
a) I had to be logged in, and
b) it only works on our own photos - I couldn't get it to work on others' photos
Such a cool feature - if only we could expand it! I'll check with DM.

I've posted this on a couple of different threads already but I also need to put it here so appolgies for being boring to anyone who reads ALL the threads
On the active makupe thread (eyes) I was thinking it would be really nice to have a set of pictures of makup or hair styles - that is closeups of our faces. So, to stick my neck out (so to speak!!) I uploaded one of me at a competition two days ago. If you want to get into this - it would be neat to have a set of faces for people to browse through - then please add a close up pic of yourself and when you do so include the word 'face' in the search word list so that we can find them. Best to also include a second word also such as 'hair' or 'makeup'.
Now back to your regular viewing!!

I agree. At this moment there are 14 DF members logged on and 181 guests. To regular posters, we can seem like a cozy little community, but there are always lots of people "eavesdropping" on our conversations. And if you check "Who's Online" you'll see that often a substantial portion of them are viewing User Profiles, so, for whatever reason, they are trying to find out more about us.

To regular posters, we can seem like a cozy little community, but there are always lots of people "eavesdropping" on our conversations. And if you check "Who's Online" you'll see that often a substantial portion of them are viewing User Profiles, so, for whatever reason, they are trying to find out more about us.
I think the thing is that it can be a bit assymetric. Pictures we post can be seen by anyone - someone who hasn't posted any pictures themselves nor built up a history on DF. See news stories on "Allison Stokke", for example. I would be fine with posting pictures, provided I knew who had access. Like maybe if photo albums had the option of being invitation-only, or limited to those who had a certain post-count. Just suggesting, not complaining. I understand our awesome mods have quite enough time putting out fires and providing advice on grinding, to say nothing of test-driving and adding new forum features.

Really not IJ, I love my height and, like a lot of tall women, love to wear heels to be even taller. It was just fitting into beccy's dress.....

Thanks LG, I'm very pleased with this one. Of course I had to look through quite a few duds - but I suppose thats normal. Although this was not one, I'm actually smiling in quite a few of them, a nice development for me.

TC, Pruthe: thanks. I wish all the pics looked as good as Kat's always seem to! But at least we got one nice one. Here's hoping for the next comp....
TC: Senior 1 is over 35, the walking sticks don't come in till Senior III and then just to whap you as they shoot by...
ED, I had a look at the photo and it looks great. Love the dress!!!

Thanks Meow. New (F) coach thinks there's too much black - and she's probably right. I'm hoping to come into a little cash soon - may treat myself to a new dress but in a lighter colour and with more 'movement'. I have the seamstress lined up (but might defect to a used one if I can find something tall/large enough - turns out most women dancers are size 0-6). I couldn't fit one of those in my skeleton...

Thanks - did reply. And thanks for the photo appreciation!
Well, I personally love the dress. I have seen lots of black dresses in the past and they usually look great, extremely classy and elegant. I like colours too but not all colours - hard to go wrong with black.

I really like this picture taken last weekend by Gregory of GRS photography at the 2007 Ontario Open. Its the first pic that seems to bring out the correct colours of the dress too.
We did OK at our second comp (made the final out of 13 couples) but we are still 'finding our feet' as it were.

nice pic, ED. the color on the float looks so rich, it almost appears as velvet... :)
elisedance
10-31-2007, 06:21 AM
thanks sam. My dress maker made me two different floats - a black and a coral one so that I could vary the look. However, I decided to wear both so that you would see flashes of colour. What you see is the coral through the black giving that velvet-like texture.

I love the look of two color floats.... Your dress is wonderful, I only wish I could say the same for my new gown.
I really labored over the colors and style for a new smooth gown I had made. It took me forever to make a decision. Finally, I was certain that I had picked the right fabrics and design.. Well the gown is done and I absolutely hate it. I am devestated that I made such a costly mistake. It is not that I hate the gown itself, the stone work is incredible, colors great, I just hate it on me. It would be no less noticable if I pinned a sign on my butt saying "look here".
I am going to wear it this week-end at a local comp, look at the video, but I dont hold out much hope. Because the gown is quite unusual(my choice), a resale on this gown could be tough if not impossible.

lol...Yes, I am sure!. I found an incredible mint green spandex for the bodice and the sheer skirts were done on a diagionial four levels of skirts, gradually longer. The skirts background is also this mint green with a swirl pattern of light blues... The bodice is stoned in the swirl pattern picking up the blues of the pattern, light green and a almost yellow white.
It is unusual and Ok I knew I was taking a risk, yet if it fit my body shape it would of been very cool... I think I am going to compete in it this week-end and absolutley I will post pictures so you can see it.

Hee, the big difference is, with that partner, *I* better be leading or we have a problem! But I wouldn't say he was less nitpicky. (The reason you can see teeth in that photo is he hated being lead by the bridle, so he was always fussing in Showmanship.) Though he was a lot quieter than some...
