Do you ever have awkward silences during dancing? What do you say?
I once said "This is the correct rhythm, right?" (even though I knew it was correct). That was a very stupid thing to say, it confused the lady.

Unless I know the person AND I know what I'm doing, I usually don't talk during social dancing. I'm usually concentating on following and dancing correctly. My partners haven't been much on talking either. We save our talking for in between dancing.

The conversation during the dance is primarily non-verbal. Any silence during that conversation would be extremely awkward indeed.

Not typically. I chat with some and not so much with others. Depends on their skill level and personality. I don't mind either way.

some of my most loaded "conversations" have been while dancing and not a word spoken.

Yes, well I indicated non-verbally [and unintentionally] that I wanted to say something, so that's why I had to say something verbally.

Like DancinAnne said, depends on the partner. Some I chat with because I've danced with them often enough that it doesnt require much thought. My instructor and other folks that I dance with where I am concentrating on the steps and following and my technique, I dont talk. I prefer it that way, actually. There's so many things at this point that I'm trying to remember to do all at once....
Long story short, dont feel like you have to talk. Some of us are perfectly happy just to be dancing with you without speaking. The dancing speaks for itself IMO.

Yeah, I'll sometimes gab when I'm on autopilot and dancing with someone I really know well. (Perfect time for gossip)
But if I'm really dancing with someone, I rarely talk--the communication is in the body and the response.
Dancing with a beginner, I never engage them in conversation. They get all messed up--which I'll admit sometimes makes me laugh because I can remember when I couldn't talk and dance at the same time....

when i'd been taking lessons for a month or two, i was taking my first or second private, and the instructor offered me gum.
i learned that i couldn't dance and chew gum at the same time. :)
i probably could now, but i actually haven't tried it since

I don't talk unless: A) the guy is literally quaking or B) I am spoken to...and I do not need to be spoken to

my general approach as well... to my mind, beyond "international or american?" there's not much else required except for "what's your name" and words of encouragement or enjoyment

Kinda like how people default to conversing about the weather, on the dance floor, I will default to discussing the current floorcraft situation (During a Quickstep: "Oh dear! It looks like we're due for some early evening showers of Swing dancers."

I will admit to chatting a bit with my partners, especially if I know them. And especially as we're working out the routine in group class -- hey, it's my entire social life, after all. Usually we keep it to pertaining to what we're doing.
I don't usually get confused, except in one WCS there was one partner who like to chat and I'd end up forgetting one of the moves in the routine we were doing. Of course, if that were to happen on the dance floor, then nobody would notice, since WCS dancers never mis-step; they just syncopate.

Exactly. I don't feel I'm dancing when I have to talk at the same time.

I don't suppose lemon juice could be used to cure dancers of over-Charlestoning? Perhaps a good splash in the eyes?
You need to just shut up and dance!

Limónes are limes. We put them in just about everything.
I've heard lemons refered to as "limónes amarillos", "yellow limes".
The new sig line is from a "You know you're a Mexican if ... " gag list that my suegra (mother-in-law) sent me some years ago. Another one:

"Piensas que el Tequila cura la gripa y otras enfermedades."LOL. I've got a Mexican dance friend who I tease about being obsessed with tequila. He's always written it off as, "I'm Mexican...of course!" I always figured he was joking...maybe there's something to it!

Tequila's good stuff. Even though I was Mexican only by marriage, it's my spirit of choice. When I was in Germany, I developed a taste for a German Schnapps (don't even begin to confuse it with the sweet American junk) called Obstwasser, Obstwässerli, Obstler, or Obstbranntwein, a distilled spirit made from apples and another fruit ("Obst" means "fruit"). The cherry variety of Schnapps, Kirschwasser, can be found in this country, but I've never known Obstwasser to be imported. I find that tequila taste rather similar to Obstwasser, albeit with different aromatics. At least as well as my taste buds can remember more than 30 years back.
I've rarely visited liquor stores, but rather buy my monthly liter of Cazadores at Costco or a .75 l at Trader Joe's. So one night I walk into a liquor store and am looking to see what tequila they had. The clerk tried to be helpful and suggested "Scotch?".
No, I wasn't wearing my kilt.

i tried tequila with tonic recently & really liked it, but so far, every time i drink it i wake up with a headache, which is unusual for me. will have to try it one more time to see... it's a very nice combo

Hmm. Must have been the tonic. Besides, why would anyone want to dilute tequila? I don't understand.
My "dance buddy" friend drinks tequila, prefering Patrón silver. She said that it's the only thing she can drink and not get sick or hungover.
