I'm hoping to get a list of some of the most famous salsa tunes of all time. Here is a start:
Grupo Niche "Cali Pachanguero" and "Aventura"
Africando "Ya Boy"
Celia Cruz "Azucar Negra" and "Quimbara"

If you'll post some of your all-time favorites, I'll keep adding them to this post and we'll get a nice list going for others to enjoy. :)

I don't know about famous, but this song:

"Cuero Na Ma" by Jose Mangual Jr.

If that song does not force you to dance, if it doesn't hit you like a 10-ton Mack, then you're not breathing! It's really hard to find, but believe me get your hands on that song, even if it's on a CD with 50 other songs you don't like!!

After that I would say:

"Periodico De Ayer" by Hector Lavoe (pretty much anything from Hector Lavoe)

And anything from Jose Alberto "El Canario"

As a newcomer to the Salsa scene (a ½ year) I properly have a little special taste in salsa music. I have tried to listen to a lot of music to hear the 1, and get used to the Salsa sound. My normal music is composed by a majority of rock and hard rock titles, so this is something completely different.

As for the Spanish language, this is almost just sounds to me. I might get a clue to the theme of the song, but no clue to any details.

There are 3 songs on my favourite list right now. All songs easy to dance to, making the lead more easy for me.

La Son Charanga – Salsa Y Charanga

This is a happy song with a nice flute, and my feet just want to move.

Yorman – Una Nueva Forma

D’Leon junior mix reggae sounds into salsa. Cool to dance to, and perfect for small breaks, shines or fun.

Africandos – Aicha

Great song, and it is possible to find it outside the salsa environment.

A little out of topic, but Joaquin Sabina did a pseudoparody to the 'Cha Cha Cole' beat called 'Ya Eyacule' ( I've ejaculated ). It might not be salsa gold, but it's on my list of top funny songs.

How about Oscar D'Leon's "Lloraras" and "Pedro Navajas" by Willie Colon & Ruben Blades.

Celia Cruz (with Willie Colon): "Usted Abuso"

Tito Nieves: "Dejame Vivir" "Le Gusta Que La Vean"

Eddie Palmieri: "Malaguena Salerosa"

Willie Rosario/Gilberto Santa Rosa: "El Apartamento"

Gilberto Santa Rosa: "La Agarro Bajando"

Rey Ruiz: "Desde Que No Estas" (I reserve the right to like bubble gum salsa)

Mickey Tavaras: "Historia Entre Tus Dedos" (I reserve the right to like downright sacharine bubble gum salsa)

Tito Gomez: "Llora"

Cuco Valoy: "Mariana Engracia" (I've never heard it in clubs, aside from when my teachers were giving lessons--and that's only because I turned them on to the compilation where I discovered this song.)

Louie Ramirez/Azuquita: "En un Beso la Vida" (Great old song, that I've never heard anywhere except on my CD player)

Fruko y Sus Tesos: "Rumba de Cali"

Etc.

I can't leave out:

El Gran Combo: "Me Libere" "La Muerte" "Los Tenis" A bunch of other songs I don't know the titles of offhand.

HothouseSalsero

Note: these are songs that make me want to dance. Some of my favorite salsa songs (especially classic salsa) don't necessarily make me want to dance that much. Much as I like "Periodica de Ayer," it doesn't make me want to dance in the Lavoe originals. (The Junior Gonzalez cover works better for dancing, even if he's no Lavoe.)

Could just be a matter of what I've gotten used to hearing in clubs.

The thing about Salsa Con Coco is that it really brings me
back to my country, Dominican Republic. The entire song
is about the streets of DR and I just love it...it is a fast song
though, but the images that come to my mind when I hear
it...man, I just love it.

SDsalsaguy
12-31-2003, 02:47 AM
Makes sense. I was just curious. And this thread is about "All Time Greatest Hits" which, in and of itself, doesn't always mean the most danceable songs...

Although this does than sort of tie back into the Learning Spanish thread (http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1694)... while one need not know Spanish to appreciate salsa or to dance it, there is something to being able to understand it as well... i.e. if you didn't understand the lyrics to Salsa Con Coco it is unlikely that it could have the same saliency for you.

salsarhythms
12-31-2003, 02:49 AM
That's a point, but at the same time, Cocoband being from
Dominican Republic, their music will appeal to people of
the country...so even knowing spanish, unless you are there
and know what if feels like to be there, I don't know if you
could really "get" it...

Does that make sense at all?

SDsalsaguy
12-31-2003, 03:04 AM
Absolutely! I take it just to be one more "layer." Speaking/understanding Spanish helps with understanding the manifest content of the lyrics whereas personal familiarity (with the location) lets you access that deeper layer, of latent content, also held within the lyrics.

Hi SD. I know what you mean. But I love this song too. The trick to turbo salsa is not making your moves too big. You can still smooth it out with passing out before the end of the song and still keep your timing. Check out some of the couples at this link: http://salsacompetitions.com/laSalsaCompetitionChampions.html
Some are high energy and some are just taking easy. :D

I'm with you SD. Although I enjoy dancing to this song a lot, it is too fast paced for my style, and my desires on the dancefloor. There is barely any time to groove a pattern out. Although a dancer can look smooth dancing fast, there really isn't a comparison to a dancer dancing smooth to a slower song, where we can accentuate and savor every bodily movement.

SDsalsaguy
12-31-2003, 01:21 PM
Thanks Peach. Yes Boriken, that's exactly what I'm talking about. I still dance smooth, even when up tempo such as to Salsa Con Coco but it doesn't match my style/preferences as well as non-turbo material does.

Hi people,

I just arrived to this forum and saw this post which called my attencion.

I really prefer clasic songs from the 70's, but there are several new CDs with really interesting stuff. I like the new CD from Raulin Rosendo (great sonero in my oppinion). A new group from Venezuela (I think) Bailatino has a great CD "Bailatino llego... con todo". Not so new the CDs from Jimmy Bosch (specially Soneandop mi trombon), Spanish Harlem Orq., los soneros del Barrio.

But what I like the most are clasics. There are great songs from Larry Harlow, Ray Barreto, Cortijo y Ismael rivera, Tito Puente, Andy Harlow, Willie Colon, Tipica 73, Bobby Rodriguez, Bobby Valentin, Orquesta la Unica, La Sonora Ponceña, El Gran Combo (algunas...), Javier Vasquez y la veradad.

It is very difficult to name a few songs... but I leave a few here.

- La sonora Ponceña - "Yambeque" and "Date Quenta" (CD "determination", 1982)
- Bobby Rodriguez - Numero 6 (CD "lead me to that beautiful band", 1975)
- Javier Vasquez - "Se formo la rumbantela" (CD "La verdad", 1974)
- Ismael Rivera - "El nazareno" y "La soledad"

All the best for you all in 2004. Regards from Portugal.

Guantanamera is a guajira which has became incredibly popular and has been played by just about every great singer in the salsa world. Guantanamera is guajira's most famous song. One of the more popular versions we hear today is indeed sang by Celia Cruz.

Guajira Guantanamera was written and sang by Joseíto Fernández. Guajira is cuban peseant music.

Juliana - Cuco Valoy - DLG, in my opinion destroyed the song

I found this way at the beginning of this thread - Boriken what do you think of Orq Tabaco y Ron's version of "Juliana?". I just heard it on SalsaStream and I really liked that slightly faster tempo. I'm really really bad with the names of song and artists (I always remember the feel though) - but the Cuco Valoy version was the first I heard and I like that a lot too. Always makes me want to get up and dance even when I'm tired. :P

I did however, locate the DLG cover of this song...and I will agree *ugh*...there's something about it that just doesn't feel right...

Yes, absolutely love their Salsa "English" version of "Lady". Although, I don't particularly care for Salsa being sung in English (just my own preference), however, I do like this one. :)

Hi all, this is my first post on this site. Finally a site not filled with spammers and pests.

Looks like this topic has been up for a while.
My choices for top ten are based on the way they make me and the people around me feel.

I think the music should have feeling, and just hit you and make you want to get up and dance.

These choices are based on real life experience with people(family & friends @parties.)

The songs I post seem to always make young and old (or both) salseros get up and dance

1. Fruko y sus Tesos - Charanga Campesina
2. Ray Baretto - Fiesta en el barrio
3. Joe Arroyo - Rebelion
4. Puerto Rican Power - Cuando Faltas Tu
5. Fruko y sus Tesos - Patulekos (I love the old stuff!) the new stuff is sometimes boring or aggravating! 8)
5. Grupo Niche - Una Aventura
6. La Sonora Carruseles - Vitamina
7. Los Soneros del Barrio - Que se sepa
8. Pete El Conde Rodriguez - El Rincon
9. Wayne Gorbea - Salsa Picante
10. Charlie Palmieri - Mambo Show 8)

Actually my username was given to me by people who saw me dance (first at the clubs, then my family started calling me that). I'm ok I guess but everyone says I move well for a big guy! (not fat kind of stocky from weightlifting.)

My family are a bunch of latin mutts and i'll tell you why...

I'm Mexican, my wife is from Nicaragua
By marriage we have people in our family from
Puerto Rico
Cuba
Dominican Republic
Mexico

funny huh?
It's actually cool because when we go out or party you really get to see the different styles of Dancing from
Cumbia
Salsa (My favorite) It's always Cuban Style vs Puerto Rican & Nyorican Style
Merengue
Bachata
Ranchera

I have learned a lot from all of them and it's kind of made me a hybrid dancer (if there is such a thing) trying to combine them all.

what about victor manuelle?! i don't remember having seen his name... "que habria sido de mi", 'volveras', 'voy a prometerme'... and many others...
there's this song called 'quedate conmigo' by orquestra la sabrosura... which i love... it's very romantic...
and fast salsa is cool too... sonora carusselles... orquestra de la luz... tito puente (which is actually mambo)... celia cruz...

I just wanted to say that for someone who, up unitl about 2 months ago, had not heard any salsa music, I now find that this is all I listen too :D

Its fantastic. Im not even going to attempt to describe what it is about it but I just find it really addictive.
Being able to dance to this music is one of the biggest drives for me to learn salsa.
The fact that I dont understnad one word of the lyrics demonstrates how powerful the musical rhtyhm must be. I really want to learn Spanish? now (sorry if thats wrong) just so I know what the lyrics are saying !!!

To get the thread back on topic there is one song that I listen too quite a lot at the moment. Im not sure if it is because it has a relatively clear beat or because I just like it :) but its

Pedro Conga - Vicio

Man, only an MP3 can sound that out of wack, well midis too... Sorry, I'm kind of a music listening snob and can usually tell when a song has been converted from format to format.

I never heard the song before... The vocalist sounds like he came out of a wayne gorbea school.... he just sounds so wayne gorbeaish. Catchy beat... Not my cup of tea mixes but the horns, with the few descragas can make me over look the things I don't like about the song.

To style or not to style, that isn’t as simple a question as it might seem...

The song has a "choppy" beat. I would play with my hands, head, and body a lot by pointing in different directions, slapping my butt, shaking it in circles in unison with the loud distinct beats of the 1,2,3s. Even move my upper body forward or backwards strongly little by little on each beat… I would also step along with each bongo hit, and the cowbells when they come to the forefront. During the synthesized beginning I would do my little bit of "tango", or a close embrace with a sway left to right, with little quick moves of the upper body during the faster parts. When the lyrics start, a bit of partner work nothing all that fancy, when the "rap" like beat go in the mix, I would slouch my body a lot more and bring it back “straight” as the music goes back into salsa mode. Then for the full “rap” section, I’d let go of my partner and do the groovy ghetto/reggae dances.

In the horn led sections I would do slower shines, nothing to intricate, enough to blend with the music but not over do it. I find the song to be so so bouncy, so I would bounce too. It’s hard for me to describe style as I don’t really style, but really flavor the music more than I care to follow the hand here, feet there style like mentality…

Hi all,

I tend to go for the blood pumping type songs say:

Cachondea by Fruko Y Sus Tesos
Bombon de Azucar by Charlie Cruz
Queiro Salsa - by El Canario (I love all his songs but I have a special affinity for this one)

There are number of others whose names escape me, but it should give you an idea of what I like.

I'm also after the name and band of the song that Alex Da Silva and Liz Lira danced to in the preliminaries of the Mayan Salsa comp.

The lyrics were something to the effect of "seguimos cantando con la sonora contento". It was either that or something close to it.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could tell me the name. Apologies if this is an inappropriate forum to post this request.

Peach, girl you and have the same taste on music... I can't even believe that you know about Raphy Leavitt, he has some amazing songs! Ahhhh, I love listening to Herido, Jibaro Soy, Cafe Colao, Payaso, La Cuna Blanca, Mentira, Lamento Jibaro, Soldado... It's a shame, not even here in NY City his stuff is played. I actually gave a DJ a number of songs, amongst them Leavitt's Cafe Colao. I told him there was a need to really delve into salsa and Leavitt is a must stop on the way to further expanding the current DJ repertoire

BTW. I know Cheo sang "Todo Tiene Su Final" as a tribute to Lavoe, but Lavoe's original version of "Todo Tiene Su Final", I find it to be way nicer than Cheo's verison. Even whit Cheo’s amazing voice.

Andy Montañez's Milonga Para Una Niña is beautiful, along with Casi Te Envidio (I think that is the name).

I'm not all that into Heavy Mambo Jazz to dance, so I don't really like Tito's stuff. I enoy listening to though...

Did you know that Canita al aire is used in PR now to mean, you are cheating on your mate? The usage actually came about when the song came out. The song is about that very thing; cheating. Ever since when someone says that they are “echando una canita al aire”, you can safely assume they are doing something they shouldn’t be.

Yeah, Boriken, the more I explore the music of Salsa, the more I find myself drawn to the classics as opposed to the new music. Artists like Leavitt, I'm just now discovering and you're right, it's just shameful that you don't hear them often if not at all. Not too diminish the new stuff (there is alot out there that I like) but I'm starting to find it too noisy. Meaning, there is so much going, they really forget about the music and produce whatever is market popular. Really funny too is what I thought was new salsa music to me is usually music that was introduced twenty or more years ago. That's what makes the music special, it's longevity. You can put in Feliciano, Colon, Lavoe and so many others and it would sound as if it was done yesterday.

I like Hector Lavoe's version of "Todo Tiene Su Final" better as well. I'm still working on building a collection of his music, especially the stuff with Fania Allstars and Willie Colon. "Alejate" & "La Murga"(Lavoe and Colon) are also favorites. Ruben Blades did a version of "La Murga" on his Encore CD and well...didn't like it. :D For the longest time, I didn't know who Andy Montanez was but I knew his voice. He is also on my wish list.

Yeah, you have to really be into Jazz in order to like Tito and Palmieri's stuff. Their music tends to be more conceptual alot of the time and can be hard to translate into dance. I spent an hour in the music store once just listening to Tito Puente and "Ran Kan Kan" was the only song I liked dancewise, after listening to about 10 of his CDs.

No, I didn't know that. I cheat with a translator on my computer so I always get the universal/proper translations. Very interesting how music influences our languages as well. I'm still learning/working on my spanish though but will keep that in mind when my PR friends have the goods on someone.

Oh, did you ever find that Oscar D' Leon CD (Llego...Actuo...Y Triunfo!) you were looking for?

I have left to waiting for one of my friends to visit his home country Colombia now in May. I asked him, if he could please find out if they have it over there. Hopefully since it is closer to venezuela they'll have it.

You mentioned something very true, in latin muisc, there is more enphasis on the songs being danceable than they are musical "quality". The song can be the best of musically built songs, but if it doesn't have what we call flavor, hence, not transferable to dance, they songs ends up sucking! No matter how well put together the song is.

The concept of sabor/flavor is very hard to explain. Each day I see my non-latino friends mistake flavor with patterns, and crazy advance movements/techniques. Yet, when latino friends see the same dancers, all they can say, is that they are technical but have no oomph, what is best described as sabor or flavor. And why many new comers to salsa mistake styling with having flavor. It doesn't matter how good the music is, what separates it from the rest is how much flavor it has, and why it is argued by salseros every where, that Puerto Rican salsa has always been the most flavor full. It might not be as technical as New Yorkican salsa but it is by far a lot more flavor full...

I wish i had more time to expand by my buddies are waiting to go to lunch...

Yeah, I usually tend to divide my favorites into two concepts. Salsa for the soul (flavor) and Salsa for the brain (technical). Sometimes, these are interchangeable or are the same thing depending on which soul or brain is listening but for the most part the less technical the music/dance is, the more flavorable it becomes. Ironic, I'm listening to a favorite song by Eddie Palmieri now called "Lo Que Traigo es Sabroso", (What I Bring You Is Nothing If Not Tasty). Hence, the flavor.

There is a song that I LOVE -- I have never been able to find it anywhere other than on a CD a DJ burned for me. It sounds like the male singer is saying: "La rumba sabrosa.." at a few points but it drives me crazy. I need to ask the DJ what song it is! I *LOVE* it.

Melissa

Sorry I'm late to the thread...

Mellody, it might be "Quiero salsa" by Jose Alberto "El Canario"

.....You mentioned something very true, in latin muisc, there is more enphasis on the songs being danceable than they are musical "quality". The song can be the best of musically built songs, but if it doesn't have what we call flavor, hence, not transferable to dance, they songs ends up sucking! No matter how well put together the song is.....

Peach, you are too much... It's awesome to hear that you are getting deeper and deeper into this world of salsa. Which by the way, for the first time in 4 years, I was in a totally down note. I felt out of sink, out of time, out of being there, I just felt like the world was crowding me and it affected my dancing. Thank God for a few good songs, otherwise, I'd be dying right now. Anyhow, here is the the meaning behind the context of "Lo Que Traigo es Sabroso", what I bring is flavorful, now that really goes well with you assessment of Flava. :D :D.

Sabroso in that sence is meant as flavor, to which tasty alludes to

LOL. Boriken, that sounds much better. :D Now that I've read it again, let me clarify Palmier's title just in case someone reading this is like what the?!?.... . The actual title is Lo Que Traigo es Sabroso", (What I Bring You Is Nothing If Not Tasty) but this is noted in the CD jacket: "The title helps underline what mambo men and women are trying to do. They are honey-gatherers. They work under the sign of the goddess of love, Ochun. Get out your mirror and make yourself smart. Then dance to Palmieri. As in the dance of the bees in the hive. the intensity of your motion will tell all the world where the sweetness is hidden, its level of quality, and how you can share it". :D

God, You just brought something to mind, Ochun as we know is a santeria orisha... Salsa always sang with santeria in mind until...... The song "Todo Poderoso" by Hector Lavoe and Willie Colon. That song marks the first time that Christianity finds its way into salsa. Todo Poderoso means, All Mighty. I forget when it was released, something tells me '76, I hope that is the right year.

For Hector Lavoe, perhaps you should start with the compilation of his work. 15 Exitos: El Cantante De Los Cantantes. It has a green cover with a pic of his face with his right hand on his right cheek. However, if you don't mind spending a lill money, I would suggest to get both Vols. Of Hector Lavoe: The Fania "Legends of Salsa". There are 2 vols and for around $50 or $60 bucks you'll have Salsa's most bestest singer's most bestest stuff. :D

Then, get anything you can from him, as well as Wille Colon. :D :D :D

I have to agree with Boriken, I found the "legends of salsa" collection very worthwhile in terms of music and the additional materials (which were a nice surprise).

One classic favourite of mine is "El Nazareno" by Ismael Rivera in Traigo de Todo (1974).

Two others (non-classics) that I find myself going back to are "San Francisco Tiene Su Propio Son" by Ritmo Y Candela, and "Vacilar" by Orquesta Gitano.

Hello Salseros.. I was surfing the net to find a copy of Mangual's "Cuero Na' Ma" and happen to find this site. I think this is an awesome thing going on. I was so interested I read all 9 pages of replies...LOL I agree with the earlier comment about salsa being a lot of noise now and days. The older the salsa the better the quality and style. Nothing beats a good tumbao de bajo and a rich montuno along with a great trombone and trumpet mambo coming back to great coro and soneo... NOTHING BEATS THAT. Examples that I can come up with are:

Ismael Rivera- Milongo Mandinga
Gran Combo- Ponme el Alcolado Juana, Desenfunda (x-mas tune)
Tommy Olivencia (I think, Please correct me if I'm wrong)- Trucutu- Live version
Orq. Guayacan- Torero
Niche- Etnia, La Danza de la Chancaca
Frankie Ruiz- La Cura
Hector Lavoe- Mi Gente
Tito Rojas- El hablar de Mi
Oscar D'Leon- Me voy a Cali
Adalberto Santiago- Adoracion

That's just a few out the top of my head. The new salsa market now is all about mass production and little to no quality music. Everyone is making a cross over from Hip hop and R+B to salsa and it's totally killing the sound and flavor. What happened to the afinque y sabor??? No more soneros like Lavoe or El combo, or any of those greats.. Miranda, Adalberto, the whole Fania.. I just hope things make a turn and we go back to Salseros that actually speak spanish and not have to learn to speak it to try to make a CD worth selling. Nothing against anyone that wants to learn the beautiful Spanish language. Only thing I'm saying is that an artist in the Salsa genre should be able to fluently speak the language in order to make a salsa CD or get into the salsa market. That's my opinion and I've always been a little on my own in my opinions but there is a great difference in soneo/improv and sabor/flavor when the sonero/singer knows and really understands the Spanish language opposed to one that had to learn the language in order to make sense. Any opinions on that, or I'm I alone in this too....?? LOL...

Hey everyone. I was reading through this post and there is a radio station on the internet that plays a lot of the music you guys are talking about. I've been listening for the past week and I love it. Check it out http://www.100-percentsalsa.com

Here are some of my favorites

Bobby Valentin - Ven Rumbero
Jose Bello - Indiferencia

Tons of Johnny Rivera and Ray Sepulveda

And of course..the greatest old school Sonero of all time

Ismael Rivera - Traigo Salsa, Mi Negrita Me Espera, Si Te Collo and much more

Boriken, I´m listening to Idilio as I´m writing this post. It´s the Willie Colon & Andy Montanez version. I love this song!! I have the mp3 for almost 2 years now. I´ve never danced to it though. The DJ´s here don´t play it too often. :(

Regarding "No me acostombro" by Rey Ruiz, this song holds a special place in my heart. It´s one of the few songs I´ve reached nervana with.

That's great, MLS 8).
It's so easy to get into this "s/he's too advanced for me to ask" mindset, isn't? Yet not all advanced dancers are snobs, and there are many really good dancers who are also great fun to dance with.

Actually besides being very advanced, she was also a clique. This deadly combination made me hesitate before asking her for a dance.

To be completely honest, it was more the clique thing than her being more advanced than myself. I don´t get intimated anymore when I dance with ladies above my level (at least in salsa) 8) .

Very true, unfortunately, in my first 6 months of salsa, I danced with a very advanced leader, who flung me around like a dish rag, and started telling me what I was doing wrong in the middle of the dancefloor. When I see him approach me know, I run in the other direction!

Squirrel's absolutely right, Timbafreak.
When I danced with a very advanced leader for the first time, also in my first 6 months of salsa, he really opened my eyes to salsa dancing. It really felt like dancing, I was able to do things I'd never learned, and I was inspired.

A very advanced leader should:
- be able to adjust his dancing so his partner wouldn't feel she's totally out of her depth,
- be able to make sure his partner enjoy the 3 minutes with him,
- not fling anyone around like a dish rag -- the leader's supposed to make the follower look and, as SC says, feel good, and,
- never, ever, give unsolicited advice during the dance.

Timbafreak, you are perfectly right to give him a wide berth.

I will make sure you get a copy of the CD siged by Mr. Mangual as soon as he gets back from Spain! I will also show him what you wrote.

The original recording was in the first Tributo A Chano Pozo cd. It was a instrumental recording meant for teaching. The cd's tracks were divided in percussion as in bongo, timbal, conga, etc. Then it all came together in the final track called Cuero Na' Ma. Later Jose recorded the track with lyrics. The original cd is hard to find but not for me. Salsa hits 2002 has the tune but the composer listed is in error, thus a little dispute. Seems that Tito Puente also did a tune called Cuero Na' ma, but both songs are completely different.

Celia Cruz, Elvis Crespo and La Sonora Carusseles, for example, have amazing salsa pieces. Then again, there are so many salsa artists I couldn't even name half of them!

P.s. But still. Celia Cruz rules!

Welcome to df Caleño 16! :D The only request I have is we ask people to avoid pictures in their signature lines as it can make df graphic intensive and harder to browse for those who use dial-up.

Look forward to seeing you around.

Hector Lavoe - Trucutu

The bit where he goes "Tru-tucu-tu cu-TU cu-tu trucu-tucu" or something, is priceless.

And the lyrics in general are good because of all the puns and cool onomatapoeic words.
