in the past present or future?

myself played the flute for four years then switched to trombone so I could play in the jazz band. I miss it and I like to think that I'll get back to it in some degree in the future although I know it's not a priority in my life right now.

oh I also do a little digeridoo and hand drumming and have made a few.

how about all of you? what instraments do you play or used to play in school or what not.

Violin, flute, and voice. A couple different orchestras, concert band, marching band, and some assorted string quartets. No jazz band, though *sigh* (unless going to check out the jazz piano playing boyfriend counts! LOL)

Started out with classical piano a couple of decades ago.

Started teaching Afrocuban rhythm i.e. congas, bongo, hand percussion four years ago.

Started playing in a band three years ago, starting on keyboards, then backing vocals while on hand percussion, then congas, currently recording on bass. I also dabble (badly) on the tres.

All of it afrocuban music, plus cumbia.

I used to be a saxophone player (soprano, alto, tenor, bari) for about 6 years...but then gave it up right before I turned pro (I can still play but I'm WAY rusty and have forgotten a lot). Had to stop for physical reasons (TMJ)...I was in constant pain and just lost my joy of playing...maybe someday I'll pick it up again.

I used to play a little piano, and have studied some brass and percussion, and even sang in a choir one semester in college (mainly since I was trying to meet girls, but I enjoyed it regardless). :)

Oh yes, I used to play a little shakuhachi too...but man that's a hard instrument to learn, the embouchre is REALLY difficult....

I've played piano since I was twelve. A year ago I studied voice. And currently am teaching myself to play guitar. I love music, all sorts. Music is so therapuetic. You can listen to it, you can play your own, and you can be inspired to dance from it. :D

right now, I can play triangle.
You probably still have me beat MadamSamba . . . I'm beginning to think that I might be the least musically inclined/gifted person in the entire DF family!

Oh well...

Ha, ha, SD...but you haven't heard me play triangle! :) Oh, I forgot I used to play recorder in high school. See, I don't even qualify for jack of all instruments, master of none. :)

Re Vince's guitar...yeah, what they said? What about the guitar?

Hey, maybe at the DF reunion you could have a make-shift DF jam session...those who can play do so, those who can't dance... :)

Oh, I'd pay money to see that!

Sounds to me as if DF could put together a salsa band.

Orquesta DF or
DFG?

how about all of you? what instraments do you play or used to play in school or what not.

geez, immigrant asian mother had me taking three music lessons a week during my adolescence, additional private theory & voice lessons, picked up a few other instruments on my own, did some writing, arranging & conducting in high school & college...

kinda like newton developing calculus just so he could study physics! :D
seriously, the theory & arranging background makes on-the-fly choreography relatively simple & also helps me anticipate breaks & ends of phrase correctly when i hear a new song.

I'm a musican--began playing piano at a young age, continued on into college where I majored in music/ piano performance. College musical studies focus on classical music, but I am also proficient in all other styles including pop, rock, Latin, jazz, blues, music theater, vocal styles. I get a kick out of playing all sorts of styles.
I also played percussion, especially drums from elementary school through high school. Played in all the bands, indoors and out. Loved that snare drum.
About 10 years ago took guitar lessons and can play both electric and acoustic guitars. I focused on jazz and blues, but also learned some classical style too. Haven't done much guitar lately. I'm a bit rusty on it.
I minored in voice while in college and I've sung in many choirs and ensembles. But my main instrument is the piano and electric keyboards.

That's very impressive Blondie... go you! ... has there ever been a time when you wanted to quit? Did it all come very naturally to you?

I used to play alto saxophone, but stopped after high school. I've still got it around somewhere, but I haven't broken it out in a few years.

Dear Blondie,

A tres is a cuban guitar played by peasants (guajiros) and it's sound is often mistaken for a twelve-string. It functions as a rhythm instrument, playing vamps that are identical to that on the piano or violin.

Nowadays, it has three courses of double strings, commonly tuned to E,B,G. Mine's tuned to E,C,G.

Contra bass clarinet is a cool instrument. That and contra bassoon. Wow. You have to have some serious breath control. But sweet. :D
