I got my first pair of latin pants in the mail today and I'm a unsure about something that I should probably already know.

Aren't latin pants supposed to be around the navel level?

Did you see what they were before you bought them?

Latin pants CAN fit like reg pants (around your waist) but can also be higher than that or lower, depending on design. Are you high waisted? Then you need low cut pants, etc...

These are old fashioned latin pants. These days, latin pants come to waist level with or without belt.

I was measured by the person who made the pants, but they were mailed to me.

If the pants are supposed to be at my navel, then it's too loose. If they're supposed to be at my waist, then they're too long, because I can't take a step without my heel stepping on my pants.

They look really nice, though. I realize that my legs can look straight after all and my hip motion isn't as bad as I had been originally afraid it would be.

really long pants are "in" nowadays. unless you're actually tripping over them as you dance (unlikely), you shouldn't have a problem.

have been tripping lately on pro's pants, which drag fabulously on the floor. i believe he's rethinking their extreme length... they sure look great, tho. his partner makes all his pants, so he can adjust them however he wants.

Only with men with beer guts - otherwise, the belt goes across the b button.

While we're on the subject of latin pants, can someone tell me why it's the style for dance pants to be SOOO wide and flared? You can hardly see the feet and they look like bell bottoms. I see this not just on latin pants but also for what a lot of men are wearing in smooth costume as well. Is it supposed to make the legs look cleaner when they're extended or something?

A belt across belly button will make a man look like a country buffoon; personally, I will feel uncomfortable. I don't recall seeing a latin dancer wearing his pants so high. One inch below b button seems to me just right.

Hm.. we can't seem to agree here. When I pull the pants up to my belly button, they look nice and are still pretty low, but my heel doesn't actually get caught in the pants. After about 10 seconds of dancing, pants go about 1 inch down.

I don't actually trip on them, but I am stepping on my own pants every time my heel lands. It seems inevitable that either me or my partner will step on them.

Let's pose this question. if the pants are sitting right where they should be, should they touch the ground. if so, how much?

I had assumed that, when in their final position, the pants should almost touch the ground, but not actually touch the ground.

I had assumed that, when in their final position, the pants should almost touch the ground, but not actually touch the ground.

That's what I meant by "in" - in the past, pants were typically made to almost touch the ground but not quite (as you described). Now, the trend is to have the pants actually touch the ground. The idea is that while dancing, the pant legs (being super wide) are flying around and no one wants to see your hairy legs. As to how much should be on the floor...hard to say. If it's just skimming the floor (less than a centimeter), I'd say that's ok; If you have an inch of fabric dragging, that's probably a bit much.

And, as I said earlier, stepping on it is ok, as long as you're not tripping on it.

crazy fads!

oh really... hm... in that case maybe my pants fit just right... it's a bit unnerving, but I actually don't feel like I'm going to trip on them or anything.

Personally, I like my hair legs though....:)

Yeah.. I tried practice last night. It mostly didn't affect my dancing, my not being able to feel the floor with my heels was a bit distracting.

Also, it seems that I would eventually tear my pants this way. I'll have to get them shortened.

Interesting that there isn't agreement on how high the pants come up, though.

Dance costumes are not exactly government issued military uniforms. Individual dancers make them in the way they like, and this is a part of the game. Latin pants used to have stirrups, but it is difficult to put stirrups to the pants with wide flares.

Why don't you look at pictures of various male dancers (preferably in poses, not while moving) and see how high or low you prefer them on others? Seems like a logical idea to me when you want to know what's in and what looks good...:)

Mostly I see pants that are a millimeter or so (VERY slightly) from the floor *in heels*. Thus if you are stepping on them while in heels, they are obviously too long, probably still by a centimeter or so, but still too long.

As contracheck and others pointed out, applying one (current) style to a variety of body types is a recipe for disaster. Consider loooong-waisted guys vs short guys and other body types. Go with what looks good on you.

You also haven't made any mention of how the crotch area fits.

If it's down around your knees when they fit on your hips and the pants are dragging on the floor, obviously they don't fit.

I would put the crotch length where you are comfortable with it, and then determine whether or not the tailor fit them to you right. The waist may be baggy or the legs too short.

I did that before I made my original post and came to the conclusion that the pants would probably look good around my navel. I could look at some more pictures, but given my short legs, that's pretty much the way I'm going to want it.

Actually, I thought that's the way most people had it.

Anyway, I just wanted to make sure before I ask for the pants to be modified.

I wasn't talking about where they sit on top (although I guess that's important too) but where they end, i.e. how long they are. I thought that was your issue...

okay so what are the tips to look our for? eg with a long leg and medium waist (34) with a medium sized torso length you would want what type of pant?

Although the waist size sounds familiar, we need a style expert on this one!
