View Full Version : Tinted self-tanner: recommendations?

I dutifully read through several threads on tanning, but couldn't find what I was looking for, so I'm reluctantly starting yet another tanning thread :) !

I am very very pale and have had bad luck with self-tanners, which always come out streaky. But I have only tried clear lotions and it occurred to me that if I tried a tinted self-tanner, presumably if I got the tint even, the tan would be even, too.

Anyone have experience with tinted self-tanner and any product recommendation?

Thanks!

pretty much all self-tanning products that exist contain a bronzer (tint). The exceptions would be matas or any light, daily "moisturizer" (or some airbrush stuff).

I'm not sure how long you've been tanning, but I'm surprised you haven't come accross tinted tanner yet...walk into any cvs/walgreens and you'll get a giant selection of tinted stuff - neutragena, l'oreal, etc.
A lot of people use normal, store-bought products that have some tint to them. Then there's the hard core tanning stuff like protan (where the tint is more like a paint). Basically, the more hard-core the tanner, the more bronzer is added in (for whatever reason...)

Oh, I've seen them, tons of them, that's the problem. I was wondering if anyone had a particular brand they liked. And whether I'm right in thinking that the tint really helps to get the tanner more even than the clear/white formulas that you can't see as you apply them.

I to am very fair skinned. I have itless 10 different types of tanner right now. I love Sant tropez... it is tented to make sure that if goes on evenly. The the next morning you shower and it is even....Fake Bake is also good.
I have some pro tan that I use at comps, the kind that washes right off the first time.

I like L'Oreal Sublime Bronze in the "Deep" shade. To get and maintain a good color, use daily after bathing.

I've heard St. Tropez is great. Mean to try it one of these days.

Liz: does it have a strong tan-lotion smell? I'd rather it didn't:)

I does have a smell, but not as bad as some. I doen't really smell bad like most do... I really like it. You can use the lotion or the mouse type. both work really well.:p

Thanks.

I read in some article that they had to basically bathe Keira Knightley in St. Tropez for the Pirates movies because she is so pale and then she came out so dark that Johnny Depp looked a little washed out next to her on film so they had to bathe him in some too:) I thought that if they can make someone as pale as Keira look like she does in Pirates (very tan and dark) using this stuff, there is hope for me yet:)

I prefer to use the aerosol-can type of self tanners.

If I want instant results, I use Model Company's self tanner with instant bronzer. It has a 360 degree nozzle so it is super easy to get your backside. Make sure to wear rubber gloves because it dries quickly. The instant bronzer makes it easy to see where the spray is going so you can rub it in evenly and know that the self tanner will also go darken evenly after the instant bronzer has been washed off. Since it dries quickly, I spray and rub a smaller section at a time - lower leg, upper leg, etc. The tanner does not smell at all.

If I don't need an instant bronzer, I use Bliss Spa's self tanner. It is also 360 degree nozzle, but does not have an instant bronzer. Don't be alarmed when using it the first time - it sprays out in a purple hue, but once rubbed in, the purple is gone. This one has a faint citrus smell, but does not smell like the normal self tanners. Once again, wear rubber gloves so as not to make your palms orange.

I purchased both of these at Sephora. They are a little pricier than the Coppertone and Jergen's lotions, but I believe worth it.

I've also used the St Tropez - the mousse - really easy to see where you are applying it and dries really quickly.

Somehow I bet that Keira Knieghtley doesn't have problems finding volunteers to do her back when applying self tanner. *grin*

I also heard about an Austrailian tanner that Karina Smirnoff uses...is anyone familiar with one from Austrailia??? Maybe it's a tanner more easily found in Europe?

Am I spelling Austrailain correctly BTW???? :)

Australian

There is a brand called Australian Gold, but I am not sure if that is what she uses.

I heard somewhere else that the Dancing with the Stars professionals use California Tan.

There's a NY (or NJ) -based co that carries it...http: //www.ad-couture.com/contestcolour.html (paste into browser and remove the space after the ":")

Thanks for the advice! I couldn't find St. Tropez in 2 drugstores (thought I'd seen it in drugstores before, but not there now--where do you get it?). So I tried the L'Oreal Sublime Glow and was pretty happy with it. My arms, chest and back came out really well. My legs just don't seem to take self-tanner evenly, but I'll try again to see if I can improve my application of it.

do you shave right beforehand? legs may be too slick to take to the tanner...

No, I remembered someone here saying not to shave right before. It's just my legs. Combination of their having almost no pigment themselves and some awkward angles for putting it on.

As yanka said, Contest Color is available through A&D Couture. They're the sole distributor behind this tanner. Aleksandra Gisher, Karina Smirnoff, and others seems to swear by Contest Color - two coats are generally enough to get you looking Latin-dark...

Update on L'Oreal Sublime Glow: One coat didn't make me Latin dark, but a very nice shade for Smooth. And it faded very evenly too--got a little yellowish, but not hideous.

I used to use it a lot. Great for the "natural" look, but takes too long to dry and doesn't get your dark enough.

I bought some Sublime Glow at Walgreen's today. I was intending to buy a tube of Sublime Bronze, but no one could find any, and they checked for me and found out it's been discontinued. And I LOVED the stuff. I'm wary about the Sublime Glow because it's spray-on, but what the heck, sometimes you gotta live dangerously.

Oh no! I just discovered it. My drugstore had some last time I was there, so I'd better grab it while I can.

Couldn't find it.....Anyone ever use contest color? Currently I use Fake Bake which took well the first couple of times but now for some reason I am not getting as dark. And if Karina swears by it, it must be good.

Hmm... I've been very scared to try anything but Sublime Bronze since I'm now so used to it. However, Contest Colour sounds good and I do business with A&D Couture so I know they're good with dresses and trustworthy so far. Might get a bottle to try. :D
Re: Sublime Bronze, I usually do 3 coats and I get a respectable shade of tan. More than enough for my Latin uni comps. It's a bit of a bother to wait for it to dry and everything, but I like the result, it's pretty natural looking.
Re: Keira Knightley... I seriously need to hire a "tan applying" person for the back. :p
