Yup, the owner of Champions, Mary Murphy, has a little dog who frequents the studio named cha cha.

(1) You blow out a tire on the freeway and you’re upset that won’t make it to the salsa club in time!

(2) You lose your wallet, and your #1 concern is that, without ID, you won't be able to get into the salsa clubs until you get a new ID!

That's biased! I object! Shopping carts are perfectly suited for the practicing of rumba walks as well!

As an aside, I'd like to also point out that everything from the "how far would you go" thread also fits/belongs under the category of "you know your addicted when..."

Yes, a shopping cart is especially good for practicing rumba walks as well as open breaks. I also like to do twist turns and (solo)pivots while maintaining a consistent distance from the cart.

The broomsticks on the cleaning supplies aisle also make excellent partners! :)

I knew i was addicted when I spent nearly 3 months building a 20x12 dance studio in my third-car garage equipped with a "floating dance floor" (see other post on this), mirrors, sound system, and fans everywhere.

Now I can practice in the middle of the night if I cannot sleep, etc. I know there are much better things that can be done to get back to sleep, but if it's better than dancing . . . . . . . . . .

You are addicted to dancing when as a male you show up to a girls only styling class wearing high heels, a dress, and a wig, and hope the instructor thinks you are french.... No disrespect to those who don't believe in shaving... :D

Hey, we haven't heard anything on this one since August, and we have many new members.

Let's hear some answers on this topic from some of you newer members.

1. You try to determine if a song (any song) is dance-able to any ballroom/latin dance that you know. Then try doing that dance to the song yourself. :D

2. You're frustrated because you wanna get out of work in time to go see a competition, but find that you have to stay behind a while. :x

How are these for answers? ^_~

You know you are addicted when....

You get in a car accident because you were to busy choreographing a dance while driving, you forgot to pay attention to the road!

I get some of my best ideas while driving! Probably not the safest thing to be doing!

...You can never get any housework done because you're too busy scouring the Internet, looking for cool dance websites.

...You're willing to travel alone to new cities just to attend a workshop.

...You start saving every penny so you can afford to go to several more workshops over the summer.

...You start collecting lots of dancing shoes and clothing.

...You keep trying to get your non-dancing friends to come dancing with you, just once (Try it! You'll like it!)

You know you're addicted when:
Any and all money (i.e. my $40 a month allowance) goes to buying yourself more lessons. (I'm also buying my shoes with that, which means,  no more two lessons a month for me for THREE months! :x  )
You wish you were older so you could get a job for more money for more lessons.
You practice your steps in any open spaces that you can. (I do mine at swim practice when I'm on runs to the training room. I practice my walks/locks for Cha Cha.)
You begin to speak more about dance than anything else that you were previously addicted to. (It knocked out anime and band/music... Until I realized that the people around me just don't get it... :D )
You dream about the day you'll be able to go to a real dance.
You dream about the day you'll be able to compete.

:D Is that a good enough list?! *laughs* And Vince, I'm sooooo jealous! You actually have a dance floor in your own house! I have to practice in my kitchen/computer room, which is about 8" x 4'5! *sighs* Anything for dance....... =^__^=

I realised that I was addicted when the weekly studio party was cancelled due to a power outage in the area and I hung up the phone and realised that I was shaking! Well I'll dance to any sort of music, BUT...there is music that fits a dance style and those that don't, or not to a dance style that I am fond of...so that is in the Sagitta "non-dance" category.

this thread is great!!!

Okay here's mine.. you know you're addicted to dancing when

- You start choreographing phrases to the theme song of Blue's Clue's, Dora The Explorer...etc

-When you start teaching a 9 month old baby the moves that you made up.

-When the 9month old baby turns 14mnths and still remembers the moves.

-When you get depressed that you might end up getting married to some who doesn't know how and love to dance

-When you learn 90% of the choreography of every music video or show u watch

Yeah, well I can tell that I'm going to be *really* sore tomorrow, my back aches, my knee feels a bit tweaked, and I can see that I'm not walking entirely straight at the moment…hopefully all things that my chiropractor can help straighten out tomorrow afternoon.

As far as practicing, my old partner (Janelle) and I are reprising out old Rhythm routines for a comp here on campus in 3 weeks. Given that we only started working on this a little over a week ago, and that we haven’t done these routines or competed in almost two years, we needed the practice. More than this though, psychologically I *really* needed to go dance with her…

 I'm glad to hear that you're okay SD! But, *smiles* ah, the mark of true devotion! =^__^= I probably would have done the same thing (provided that I had a real partner -- I'm assuming that this is either a competition thing or something you've formed through your years of dance. I only dance with my teacher, which isn't a bad thing!  ) much to the dismay of my parents...

my knee feels a bit tweaked… Did you get hit from the front (in your car)? If you did, and your knee hit the dashboard, you could have a PCL (Posterior-Cruciate-Ligament) injury. :) Sorry, that's a bit of my Sports Med. terminology/knowledge being put to use there.... I hope you don't mind my mentioning it. It's nothing terribly serious, like an ACL (Anterior-Cruciate-Ligament) tear (I'm sure you knew what that was... ), but I thought it might be worth bringing up. Hope you feel better soon!

Not to fret Sakura... your well wishes and points all made sense in the end!

No, I think my knee is just a 'foot on the break pedal transmiting force of impact up into the knee' type thing. It's a little tender along the rim of the lower inside edge of my kneecap, but otherwise seems fine. My chiropractor (who I just saw an hour ago) says I'm in good shape and should just make it in another time or two this week if I can. I was definately carrying some tension in my mid-upper back and was jammed up a bit there, and my nerve zone was shot because of all the associated stress, but he felt that everything was clearing up well. I may still hit up the health center for some muscle relaxants tomorrow, but I seem to be OK.

As afr as practicing, Janelle and I used to compete together and decided to reprise our old comp routines for our local collegiate comp coming up on March 6. We only started working on this a week and a half ago, so didn't really have any time to spare... aside from that, however, I think that psychologically I needed to be on the floor practicing with her just to help get myself out of shock and to focus on something else aside from the accident (especially as the financial ramifications thereof are going to hit me really hard).

Anyway, thanks again for the concern and the information...

"You know you're addicted to dancing when... "

- You don't sleep very well because your feet are always moving. And the routines are flying around in your head and WILL NOT go away.

- You teach every family members your routines, even though they aren't that interested.. and are finding it hard to follow.

- You can put a dance move to almost every beat in a song.

- You cannot LISTEN to a song without moving your feet to the beat, and imaging yourself dancing to it on stage.

- Your every dream and desire is about performing.

Hmmmmm ok I know Im addicted when....

Im in bed and my feet are working my current cha cha routines, and my fiance tells me off for fluffing the covers about!

Everytime I go out to buy clothes I wonder "Can I wear that to dancing?" and if I cant it stays in the shop.

I listen for a beat in every song that comes on the radio and wonder which dance could be done to that beat.

Even people I only see once a month know exactly what dance Im doing at the moment in class.

My family and friends know all my teachers names and what styles they teach

I get mad at my daughters singing Bear in the Big blue house because his cha cha song has no cha cha beat!

You practise spins in the shower because you turn easier!

You cant walk from one room to another without incorpirating a few dance steps in (hallways are really good for locks!)

Ok I ll leave it for now......although I could probably muster up a few more heheh

I had that problem once... I lost my mobile on a train one night and was unable to contact any salsa pals for a week (until the following weekend when I was able to get numbers off people at clubs/mutual friends). I have often thought about leaving shoes in the car, but with the heat here, especially in summer, I always worry that they'll buckle and warp and never be the same again.

If I need to take shoes to work because I'm going straight to a class afterwards, I'll take them in a backpack and put them under my desk.

You Know you are Addicted to Dancing (Salsa) when...

your kids start to sing Spanish salsa songs instead of ordinary hitmusik. They don't know any Spanish expect for the word they learnt from the songs. Caranga and Quiero a Morir for example.

(The oldest one has decided to study Spanish at school. Inspired by the music and all the latin friends I have met due to salsa. I want to study Spanish myself)

5- you give up all your hours of spare time to dance in your house, or anywhere you can find space
6- you move into the smallest room in your house and turn the largest one into a dance studio
7- you post the reasons you know your addicted on this forum
8- you talk to yourself about what you need to fix while dancing alone
9- you spend more hours a week at the dance studio getting lessons than you do sleeping

Instead of dreaming, learn salsa! :D I had a salsa party in my house, and we all danced in my kitchen. Since salsa is danced on the spot (either in a circle or slot), you don't need a huge space. (I played some tango too -- space wasn't a problem since there was only one leader there who could dance tango anyway.)

This makes me LOL! Just since I have been allowing thoughts of competition to waft thru my noggin, I've seen my dining area in a whole new light - it would be a good place to practice. I have a nice flat, clean floor and I even have a heeeyoooouge mirror on one wall, almost floor to ceiling, and about 4 feet wide. I'll learn Salsa and still continue to dream! :) And Tango can work in so many spots! Just like Rumba and Cha-Cha! I've even done some Foxtrot in a friends living room after we moved the big coffee table! Yet a really big room would be so cool to have for things like the romance of a big Waltz with your closest partner. Or to invite friends over for an evening of dance where all types can be featured. Yet I'd be willing to feature a special Salsa night with or without a big space. Particularly for you, like say on your birthday! ;)

And how about a birthday wish for me ... a night of nothing but tango! :)

Bed after a night out dancing!! (Shakes his finger in mock despair!) If you are not going to sleep that is excusable, but just barely.

I thought it was very cute that you loled after mentioning the shower.

Also, I agree, after all that dancing, sleep might be the most likely result. Yet breakfast in bed might lead to other romantic activitees, too (although not usually good policy on the first date). 8)

Oh, and I'm enjoying the encouragement! :D We could tie for the flirt award if we keep this up. And who knows what might happen from there. ;)

You know you're addicted when:

More than one person can fit in your pants.
You take the mirrors off your ceiling and put them on the walls.
Someone says "nice whip" and they are not complementing your dungeon accessories.
Your favorite Bible verse is Psalms 24:7 (or Psalms 147:6)
You go Lindy Hopping on the way to a Lindy Hop lesson.
You eat more than your own weight in food every day.
The first question you ask a girl is "How much do you weigh?"
You think that the next number after eight is one.
When you pick up girls, you "really" pick up girls
One of your standard evening accessories is an ankle brace.
You routinely bring a change of clothes, water, and a towel or two for a night out (in addition to the aforementioned ankle brace).
You think an iced bottle of water is the ultimate prize for a dance contest.
Someone says vintage, they're not talking about wine.
You buy Advil in the jumbo economy size.
You frequently show up at work with a limp and/or bruises.
You can't pass a shoe store without checking to see if they have spectators, even if you already have several pairs.
You carry luggage to social events but aren't planning a trip.
You won t get arrested for going "around-the-world"
You can't watch other forms of dance without trying to identify moves that could be turned into Lindy steps or aerials.
You spend every long weekend at Lindy camps, workshops or competitions.
You schedule business trips around dance nights.
You only go home to sleep, to do laundry and to repack your dance bag.
You eat your main meal of the day at one in the morning.
You think about Lindy Hop whenever you re not actually doing it.
Your non-dance friends keep hoping that you'll come to your senses so they can see you in person again.
You find you have more in common with the W.W.II vets in the VA than your friends and fellow students.
You've found that Gucci loafers slathered with White-Out just don't look as good as Stacy Adams.
Your heartbeat is an eight-count.
Aerials? Did someone say Aerials?
You mutter "philistine" under your breath when you see (gasp) clip suspenders.
Your wife wonders why you must have a suspended wood dance floor in your basement.
You saw Swing Kids five times and you didn't even like it.
The only thing you can think of doing with a time machine is going back to the 1940's and picking up some vintage threads.
Your ties have been known to cause epileptic seizures.
When you have a chance to videotape sexy ladies and/or studly guys, you aim the camera only at their feet.
Your newest line is "Hey, are those Bleyers?" and you really do want to talk about shoes.
Your friends no longer bother to ask you what you're doing on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.
You don't wear your dance shoes off the dance floor.
You sweat through your dance partner's shirt.
You leave the floor on slow numbers.
Most of your CDs are AAD.
You evaluate the quality of CD players based on whether they skip when you and two of your closest friends jump up and down right next to them.
Your non-dancing friends (all two of them) start to refer to you as "obsessed" or "rabid."
Your dancing friends refer to you as "obsessed" or "rabid."
You tell those two non-dancing friends NOT to come visit you any weekend a big swing event is on because you know they won't want to go and you'll either go and feel guilty, or miss it and MISS IT!
You practice shim sham steps sitting at your desk at work.
You drink more than your own weight in water every day.
You are a "swinger" with multiple partners, who likes to "shag" several times a night, and enjoys "messin' around" during breaks.
People know and greet you only by a nickname, not of your own choosing, bestowed upon you by fellow dancers.
You bought a copy of Disney's "The Jungle Book" to see the animated Lindy dancing monkeys.
People could read a message written on the soles of your shoes during your part in the jam.
You make people gasp when you dance.
You make people laugh when you dance.
Alcohol impairs your dancing instead of loosens you up.
Home improvement includes removing carpeting, installing wood floors, and putting mirrors on the walls.

I love to do "flaps" from tap while I'm working my way through the grocery store!

Additionally, any time there's a hardwoord floor I can't resist the urge to bust out a few steps (even if I am in barefeet or tennis shoes).

I also find that when I have nervous energy it often turns into some sort of a tap dance step...most common for me is the "rolling heel" step.

Oh wow. Any place we can practice we do.

My living room gets turned upside down a lot. The kids do spot isolations and we have a giant turning board they drag out. They do a lot of trick turns and leaps, so they isolate in what they call a dancers box a lot. It teaches them to stay in center and not hop all over the place.

When my living room isn't a competition stage - we rent a local gallery space where their are mirrors and a wonderful, and hugh dance floor. Usually on Sundays, and for about 3 hours a pop. I really don't like our studio floor - it's not standard flooring and you slip too much.

Our kids are all competitive soloists in the jazz, modern, lyrical catagories. They will practice anywhere.

When we can't get a tumbling floor, we'll take the kids to the pool and have them do layouts on the diving board, and/or on the grass at the park.

Can you sense our desperation

I used to dance, ballet and clogging. I'm too over the weight limit now I think. I do a lot of choregraphy for the kids however. I help them with there tech, and control points.

Four years ago I broke both ankles (HIT THE WALL BIG TIME), and I haven't been able to do a lot with my feet. Doc says I have to hit the pool - so I will be doing that this summer.

I miss it. You learn to adjust your life, but I really miss it.

My kids tell me the dance is still in my head. They are right.I'm sorry to hear about your accident! How is the recovery process coming along? The pool is fabulous for recovery work. Are you just planning on swimming lengths, or are you considering water aerobics too? (I'd recommend looking into water aerobics if you haven't considered it. It's fabulous exercise and very low impact. It also works on flexibility while giving you resistance training like you would receive from light weights.)

If you're worried about the impact from ballet or clogging, maybe try a differet type of dance? I chose to try ballroom because it's less impact than ballet, jazz, lyrical and tap, which is where my background lies.

I'm just starting ballroom again after breaking my back a year and a half ago. Since I started back in February, I've lost 35lbs. and I've been free of back pain for a little over 6 weeks now. Don't let the injury keep you down though! If the dance is still in you, then you'll come back to it when the time is right. :)

Could have been Sabor with bongo drums singing "Timbalero" while all your non-dancing friends are doing aerials and triple spins, wearing pink frilly tutus and huge sobreros, and you standing in the middle somewhere, unable to follow a simple DQN.
See? I can think of worse things. You were lucky enough.

you have spent over $500 for a friends party, just so there will be a quality dancefloor there, and lots of musicians to provide the music.

One lucky friend. :)

One very good friend.

You know you are addicted to dance when:

-All you want to do is dance
-You haven’t seen your non-dancer friends for quite some time simply because you always have to be in a lesson or a dance club :)
-your family is preparing to go to France for the weekend and you are not going to go with them because you have a salsa lesson and this terrific dancer from the other night has promised to dance with you :D :D
-you are asked what present you would like the only thing that comes to mind is dance shoes, dance clothes, dance lessons, dance *** …
-you find yourself constantly having the following conversation with your father in the phone (for those of us that are still underaged )

Father:Hello Helen. Where are you?
Me:Hi dad! Salsa lesson
Father:What again??(in his most incredulous voice) But you had one yesterday and the day before that.
Me: yes so?
Father: Yeah right do you think that I am that stupid? It is obvious that you have a new boyfriend! Why don’t you just tell me his name?
Me: I have said this to you a million times I don’t have a new boyfriend I just love dancing! Ask my instructors!!!
Father: Oh so you are in love with one of your instructors! I knew it!!
Me :headwall:

when someone who has been described as a bit of a fashionista and always having sexy shoes, finds herself duct-taping the bottom of practically new Ralph Lauren sandals to make it through until the back-ordered dance shoes arrive

when your tutoring student showed up at the tutoring session with a newspaper in hand that has an article about ballroom dancing.

Your student asked you if you have seen the article, and you replied that not only have you read the article, you actually know the dancers (A&Kat) in the article......

this just happened a few weeks ago......

fortunately...I engage in this suspect behavior while child is in private interviews with admissions personnel...and he doesn't really want to be associated with me anyway  actually, both of my kids are coming to realize that I am addicted to my stuff just as they are to their stuff...when they see me go into the tv room with a glass of wine and my comp tapes they just roll their eyes...thank goodness my husband is on board as well

You know you're addicted when you hear that your husband is having a conference in Atlanta, twelve hours away, and you decide to drag yourself and your three preschool-aged kids along for the all-day drive there and back, and the four-night stay, just to get to stay at a hotel with free childcare so you can take in a lesson or two, and maybe a night at a club there.

The expense of this trip would probably buy me about 7 or 8 new salsa DVDs. And maybe a couple pairs of good dance shoes. Ahhhh, SALSA.
