Hey y'all. ;) Well surprise! A man in North Carolina in need of a partner contacted me, and we've decided to meet the morning of the competition... and then compete! We are both very excited. :D

Will I meet any of you guys there?

No, but have fun. Matching up with someone at a competition is one of the great traditions of the collegiate ballroom world, glad to see it happen elsewhere.

Not at all. As group efforts, the teams concentrate on building a lot of general dance skills, rather than set routines shared only with a partner. They host socials too, and at least for the first few years the distance between dancing there and dancing at competitions is not necessarily large (in a good way). Pretty soon all the active people from schools 2-4 hours away know each other, it's not uncommon to be in a final where you can say you've danced in some way or another with at least half of almost every other couple on the floor.

I agree.:D

I benefit a lot by picking up and competing with someone else from time to time. I just did Team Match at Emerald with a lady whom I had not danced with previously. It made us focus on what was important and essential. We did well and had a blast. It was a great learning experience for me.

If anyone needs any help with anything let me know. My wife is in charge of the volunteers and I am the registrar for the event. We finished the heating yesterday. Everyone involved with the event here is excited about the competition.

I think this could be a terrific event - though maybe only college comps would dare do it. Basically, a round robbin. 5 couples selected at random from the pool. First dance with your partner, then each subsequent dance with a partner rotation for the full five dance. Each couple gets scored but the score is totalled for each dancer - and the sum of the scores for each original partnership would determine which couple goes through. I hope that makes sense.

The idea is to test not which couple has developed the best routines but which couple are the best lead/follow. I think it would be a heap of fun and very exciting to watch - though it would take some courage to enter.

If we dance champ 10 dance, do we get to eat at the banquet dinner Saturday evening?

Oh hey didn't mean to forget about my own thread. I'm sorry!

A few of you asked what we are dancing - we are dancing uh... all of it. :D I asked to not be in the Argentine Tango as it is open, and don't know a thing about WC Swing so I bowed out of that. We opted out of Novice. But we will be dancing American and International bronze/silver, smooth and rhythm.

We're going to have lots of fun! Later I'll discover which of these little guys I'll be.
:bkick:

An update since I posted this thread is we will have one opportunity to rehearse before the competition. I hope it helps, lol!

On Sunday at the competition I will be dancing some Pro-Am with Percell St. Thomass. So I will have a very full and fun weekend!

I've never competed amateur for USA Dance and... ironically I don't have a dress. I spend all this time gluing stones to everything, and now I can't use any of it, lol! I've got some shopping to do. ;)

Some of my best competitive experiences have been with pick-up partners in the collegiate circuit as well. It's really a lot of fun, and definitely requires very finely tuned lead/follow and BS skills. ;)

There's really nothing to stop unaffiliated couples from entering the competitions, and thus becoming part of the community. Membership on teams can be a lot more restricted (though you often see alumni, faculty, and even those with "distant" connection), but with the claimed exception of the National Collegiate Champs, the competitions are open to anyone, and you can't habitually attend them without ending up a part of things.

Nah, I've seen all ages at collegiate comps. Sure, the majority are actual college students, but there are plenty of interlopers mixed in too

Really only to the degree that age effects what you choose to do.

I'm not saying that random unaffiliated people can walk up and join college teams (though it has happened) but you can show up at the competitions and will be welcomed as a full part of things.

With the exception of their nationals, the collegiate competitions are not student events; what they are is very accessable, minimal-red-tape amateur events with the collegiate population providing the critical mass that makes holding them worthwhile.

Well on the dress front I'm thinking it will be an Internet thing.

A few I am looking at are:

I need to decide fast though!

For Latin I can pull pretty much anything out of my closet. It's the standard that's killing me. Nothing I have is long enough, or flowy enough...

that red number is pretty... you could stone it up a bit... attach a float to the middle of the lower back and to each wrist... and you're good to go... :)

psssst, Samina.... no bling for syllabus Am-Ams at these comps. I know, bummer....
I'm pretty sure I have the middle triple-strap dress in a golden/khaki color, plus a couple of other non-bling'ed dance dresses if you run into trouble, Me. There's always the leotard-and-circle-skirt route too. I did that at Yankee Classic a few years ago, only to find myself on the floor with couples wearing costumes :eyebrow:. They allowed it if you were also dancing in one of the higher levels (which begs the question, why the heck were they dancing Bronze too? Not fair to the people who really belong there, y'know?)

Yes, we offer those dancing in the adult champ finals after the banquet the choice of having their meal before they dance or we will hold it for them until after the finals.

bummer... yah, i thought at first she was talking syllabus comp, but when she referred to the latins in her wardrobe (which are know are so lovingly stoned:cool:) i figured i'd gotten it wrong.

very cool, Me... keep us posted on this!

Are you an interloper if you got your start in college ballroom and never left?

The college comps are dominated by college students, especially in bronze and silver, but there are definitely a lot of adults around as well! Unfortunately the Princeton gym has really strict rules about who can get in the gym (non-affiliated people can use the gym for a membership of ~$800/year ) but our competition, socials, and some workshops we run out of the gym we run are open to everyone. I'd be happy to stick you on our general-public email list if you're interested.
