I'm debating now whether to go or not...I've been traveling a lot, and am going to Chicago toward the end of this month to work on a documentary film, so I don't really have time now and plus I'm doing two other competitions in July. Sigh...I love going to comps, but I also love doing a lot of other things. Life is just too interesting!

Oooh, this sounds fun!
I was going to ask you to be my roommate for the weekend so I hope you change your mind. I'm dancing Standard on Saturday. First comp in 16 months-- should be interesting.

I still have a room reservation and a plane ticket, so I haven't decided 100% yet. I need to talk to TS first. Fortunately the plane ticket is on frequent flyer miles, so if I cancel it I only lose about $50. I haven't sent in my entry forms yet, which means I need to get this all figured out in the next couple of days. Will get back to you!

Rhumba, Cha Cha and Bolero with one pro, Am. Smooth four-dance with the other. (Just finished stoning the skirt I'm wearing for Smooth. Think the fumes are getting to me.)
Standard Smooth and Rhythm pro-am.
But no pro?
We're thinking about it. Deadline isn't til 2 wks before comp, so there's still some time.

It really is one of the best, as all the pros compete. Trouble is Gary divides up the nights, with a different Pro event each night and, at the prices he charges for admission, I can only go to one, and it's hard to choose. I was told that tickets for Friday and Saturday evenings are almost gone.

The Pro events have so many entries that it is too difficult to run them all on one evening.
Here is a price comparison for admission tickets.
Manhattan DanceSport ......Friday Saturday & Sunday Evening $47
Yankee Classic........ Friday Evening $60 Saturday evening $65
USDSC .......Thursday & Friday Evening $60, Saturday Evening $70

I don't think a comparison really refutes the point that it's expensive, period - especially for a pro-am competitor who is already paying out the you-know-what for per-event entry fees plus ballroom entry rights (for their own events! oy! a uniquely painful pro-am cross we bear) plus everything else. I don't mean to pick a fight, but fifty bucks is nothing to sneeze at for many of us. I too have to choose which night I want to come - I can't afford to do more than one.

I think both viewpoints are valid. The cost per night is lower from many other major comps. By the same token, the cost to watch/Pro event is higher, given the division used.
And I agree, $50 is not just a drop in the bucket for many (probably most) of us.

06-08-2007, 01:21 PM
Well, having been to both, I personally think you get more bang for your buck at Manhattan than Yankee.
Just checked; to do the same events at Yankee, my entry fees are something like $70 and at Manhattan, they're $44. Plus, I have to schlep back and forth at Yankee because my scholarship is a different day than my single dances (which is incredibly annoying).

Everyone has their own priorities and desires but I would rather dance a few less pro-am events and go see the professional events. I just don't get to see that level of dancing where I live. It's worth it for me to pay to go on Friday and Saturday nights because I can absorb so much from what I'm watching. And, I think it's a cheap night out. ~ $50 for a weekend night out in Manhattan? I think it's a steal!
And, yes I do exist on bagels and peanut butter and salads for the weekend but it is absolutely worth it to me and the sacrifice is more than made up for by what I get to see on the dancefloor.
Not trying to stir the trouble pot here, just trying to present a different viewpoint.

Actually, that brings up a good point.
There's a number of similarities between the perspective of visting NY vs. living here, and that of competing pro/am vs. competing in the pro or amateur division.
And I wouldn't be suprised if the registration numbers, and results, reflect them.

This comp is a week away!!! Yay!
I am looking for a roommate for Friday and Saturday nights. I have a room at the Brooklyn Marriott for $169/night plus taxes. It is a non-smoking room with 2 double beds.
Ideally one person or maybe two would be great.
I'm a female, don't smoke and not going to be doing much partying that weekend though I have tickets to both Friday and Saturday night's events. I prefer female roommates but there are a couple of guys from my area that I know and trust and a couple of guys from DF that I know and trust so if you're stuck for a room let me know. I'm told the hotel is close to being sold out or may be already sold out.
If you're interested in rooming, please send me a PM with your contact info (cell/home phone) and I'll get in touch.
Thanks.
Good luck to everyone competing.

Looks like we are not getting the big Rhythm match we were hoping for. Tony and Elena and Felipe and Carolina are not dancing according to the heat list. But, Jose and Joanna and Emmanuel and Julia are dancing so we definitely have something to look forward to in Rhythm.
I noticed both Jonathan Wilkins and Katusha Demidova are dancing with Pro/Am students as well as competing the Open Pro. Wow, those are some lucky students! I never saw either of them do Pro/Am.
In Latin, we have Max and Yulia and Andre and Elena. That should be good!

Can someone explain to me how the whole spectating thing works for sessions you're in? I'm dancing Thursday, both sessions, and Friday morning--do I need tickets if I want to watch the heats I'm not in but that are in the same session? Sorry, clueless newbie here, I've only done one small local competition before and my pros are in Spain this week so I basically won't see them until I get to New York (as I don't seem to have anything scheduled with Chris Tuesday...meaning group might be it? Yikes.)

You need to buy tickets to any session you walk into the ballroom for, whether you're competing or spectating. Thankfully, this particular comp has fairly low entrance fees. I think I'll be going to the same 3 as you, actually.

That is not true. Gary McDonald is vehemently against charging competitors for entrance fees in sessions where they compete, so if you compete in session X, you get in free.

Really? Wow, that's the first ballroom competition I've ever heard of that does this!
Okay, just took a quick look at the registration section of their website...it is noted in fine print the entry fees for amateurs and pros include entrance into the ballroom. However, it does not say Pro-Am entry fees cover entrance to the ballroom for pro-ams. Not quite sure if this is just a semantics thing where they consider the am half of pro am to be an "amateur" entry fee, or once again pro am is the much maligned "cash cow".
Have to admit, the way it's written, it sounds like I can start moo-ing.

Nope; paid at the door (in costume). In fact, when I went to the ladies' room once, I made the gigundo error of putting my ticket and my Advil on the sink. I turned around to help a woman with her dress and *voila* when I turned back, my ticket was gone. I had to plead my case to the rather nice people at the door.

ProAms pay to get in and we feel that in not fair. I understand about Professionals not paying. We pay for the pleasure of watching them, and they should not pay to enter any more than a professional athlete should pay to enter an arena to play ball. But why AmAms get in free and not ProAms is totally unacceptable to me. As a ProAm I pay for everything and it is so hard for me to come up with the money. I just don't understand charging us and not amateur dancers, who spend much less for coaching, lessons, practice time and competitions. Actually at USDSC we don't pay to enter a session in which we are competing, but in a sense we do as the entry fee per dance is marked up high.

WHAT? Please explain! You go to the toolbar on your web browser and click on VIEW then SOURCE. When the html source page comes up, go Ctl F and type in the name of the person you are looking for. The first entry for that person gives the table their info is stored in...ignore that. The next click should show you their partner and the heat #s for their events. Copy the heat #, go ctl F again and paste the heat# into the find box. You can then click through (the VERY long document) and see who else is in that heat.

my friend competed pro/am silver latin, A division... huge field in all the scholarships, i hear. she got third.
i do not know names, alas... although i know pro was tickled to have beat out gavriline & his student, and a couple other names... lol.
edited: to remove implication that winner of silver scholarship competed open gold -- she did not, only silver-level events.

Congrats to your pro and our friend.
I'm pretty sure you can go down a level as long as you haven't won that level before. Last year, at Colorado Star Ball, the winner of both the Closed Bronze and Silver level scholarships was the same lady. I didn't not like that as a true Bronze dancer, but that's how things are. She can't compete in those same scholarships this year.

but i think an open gold dancer can only dance down to gold, not silver.
LucyDiamond
07-06-2007, 12:06 PM
And, it may also vary by comp.
I can see your point. But, maybe she had not competed in gold before and was just trying to see how she would do...My pro has been putting me all over the place trying to see if I am ready to move up or to stay in the same..might be the same deal here:p
Just went to the site. the results are posted....
first place was won by someone who also competed open gold, apparently -- technically, that shouldn't be allowed, correct? you're only supposed to go down one level... huh.
It would be really clean if she was dancing UP a level into gold!

wow! i wished all competition organizers can be this efficient in posting results and scoresheets online within 24 hours. Amazing considering the number of entries they have.
The score sheets are already posted so I won't regurgitate the results.
The surprise of the night for me was Nick and Natasha taking second in the Amateur Latin. I thought were the clear winners. They looked very strong and were the only ones on the floor to capture my attention. Nick looked very at ease out there on the floor - in a good way - and I enjoyed their expression.

Yes, that surprised me, too. I completely agree about Nik. I had been commenting during the competition on how expressive Nik is. Good job, Nik!
As for a few other events:
The U-21 standard had some very strong entries. That was a beautiful final.
I was thrilled with the quality of the entries for the professional standard basics. It was so much stronger than I remember it being last year.
The open pro smooth is looking interesting leading up to nationals. Mazin and Irina, Tomasz and JT, and Steve and Eulia have all been trading marks and dances so much these past few weeks.
Gary, great job again this year! Thanks for posting marks so promptly!

I watched the pro/am open rythym.... are you talking about A or B? Christine Stanko and Scott Lazarov won the A division (amazing, I might add). Maybe you can pm me about who you were talking about; unfortunately, I will remember dresses better than names!
For results, you should be able to get them on the comp website by looking up the name of the person on the registration page.
Thanks Mamboqueen...Talked to my friend who competed in the open A rhythm... The scores aren't showing up for me... Kristine is great, isn't she?

She is just awesome to watch. Did this move where she went airborn and spun. I was happy there was a semi-final so I got to see it twice. Just amazing.
There was a dancer I really thought should have made it into the final; not sure if it's who you're talking about; I think she had brown/multi fringe of some sort. I thought she danced VERY well.

Hello, DF'ers! How everybody is doing today?! I have decided to post this announcement to clarify some of the e-mails I and Katusha been getting recently! So here is goes:
" In the recent months both me and Katusha have gotten a number of questions and emails concerning the following issue! Therefore we both would like to clarify the question of our residence at this point of time! Yes, it is true that both me and Katusha are residing in Ridgefield, New Jersey! Hopefully this should clear up all of the rumors!"
Thank you,

Thanx to Gary for moving this comp into the forefront webwise - I found it amazing that all comps use the same comp program ("Comp Manager") but NO comp ever simply hit 'output' and uploaded the results to the internet. It is a BIG value for the participants and can be a deciding factor in how you think of a competition - begging paper from a disinterested worker on site is tedious and is not in the spirit of today's competitor.

I found it amazing that all comps use the same comp program ("Comp Manager") but NO comp ever simply hit 'output' and uploaded the results to the internet.
Putting the marks up on the web is always appreciated - there are actually already a lot of compmngr output files on the web from numerous competitions.
The html output option was an extra cost option in the past, which is why a lot of comps posted various document formats or PDFs of the kind of marks that you print out and post on the wall at the venue.
And right now, with the initial menu to even browse the results being a 7 megabyte file, the older methods are a looking a little better.

I am so tired I was sitting across from another Supershag person on the train and we didn't recognize each other without our hair and makeup done. (We also both fell asleep at one point.) She only recognized me when I talking with my seatmate about having been at the comp and she overheard the pro names.
That was a BLAST. Thank you Chris and Tibor for getting me through without, as far as I could see from the video, looking like a total spaz. Even when I completely forgot the Bolero routine. While I'm not overjoyed with myself, 5th in four-dance bronze Smooth A is pretty darn good for someone who hadn't even done a Viennese Waltz before April.
And Chris and Tibor, look out, my next lessons I'm bringing the video and I want to know if what I see that sucks is the same thing as you see. Because I need to get working harder! Also, Chris, I want an explanation of why Andre and Elena keep beating Max and Yulia because having seen them in person now, not just on TV--I still like Max and Yulia better.
Speaking of Pro Latin--those who were not there and did not see the Rhumba final--YOU MUST WATCH IT. That was priceless and I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

IMHO, the simple explanation is that Andre is a much stronger dancer than Max. However, Yulia is extremely talented and probably one of the strongest Pro Latin female dancers. Really depends on the panel and what they prefer. I feel that Andre and Elena portray the man-woman relationship better in their dancing. 2 years ago, I felt that Andre/Elena lacked fluidity and looked weaker than Max/Yulia but their form has really improved.

I thought the Cabaret division Sunday night was.. interesting. The first couple bobbled a couple of lifts before he finally dropped her pretty hard on her bum. The winning couple was dancing a routine that everyone around me said they had already seen multiple times. One Rhythm couple danced an interesting and quite lovely lyrical routine that had much of the same choreography as their competition routine (indicating that they hadn't had time, maybe, to put something else together.) I very much enjoyed the presentation by a Smooth couple, Lisa Vogel and partner, who danced a demanding and emotional routine to a pop song. They were underscored in my opinion.

And she did a lot of beautiful solo work too, and very well done.
I was surprised by Linas and Ieva's routine, seemed thrown together without much thought and I sure didn't get the costuming. So he can do some pop and lock stuff, like Gary Gekhman, this is supposed to impress me? On the other hand, I thought Iveta and Gherman's number was well thought out from beginning to end and I know that at the world showdance competition, they made the finals and the Gekhman robot piece did not. Different taste over there I guess. If this sounds too negative, by the way, don't post it, I am never quite sure what critique is allowed and what isn't and don't want to ruffle any feathers.

This is the routine they used for their showdance at OSB so I don't think it was just thrown together. In general, it seems that Standard show numbers are not as creative as the other divisions. They usually just go out there and dance "classic" Standard. Gary and Rita's routine seems the exception rather than the norm.

I hear you. Friday night, I was done, exhausted, somewhat giddy and not myself, and ready to dance another twelve heats of ANYTHING. Then I kept running on nothing until I got on the train Sunday to come home and I've just crashed ever since. I'm actually kind of jittery, waiting for group lessons Tuesday, because I need to dance again and I'm just too worn out after work today.

The winning couple was dancing a routine that everyone around me said they had already seen multiple times.
And their show is getting better and better! I noticed some changes to the choreography (it has been long time since I seen it last though) which made the whole thing a lot better, and very nice costumes - not sure if these are the same costumes they used originally. Very nice! great details! Her hair really amused me :-) I couldnt' stop laughing. It looked exactly like those Manhattan DanceSport trophies, if you know what I am talking about:-).
Linas's and Ieva's show - I was very impressed, they really did a lot to show a different personality on the floor (well, at least different for Linas), and had lots of energy. Also the way they were flowing from tango to foxtrot to a pop song was really something. The level of dancing makes the whole thing especially enjoyable for me. A very entertaining show. I was so glad to see it since I didnt' go to Ohio Star Ball and didn't get to see it there. I doubt they were actually counting on getting the first place trophy.. They did a great job entertaining us, and showing off. they are cool like that:-).
German and Iveta - a great show, very nice choreography and style. I thought the other couples had more energy. I've seen it before as well.
The smooth couple's show was really nice. Dont' really see how they could be placed higher though. Nice dancing, but not as well thought out idea and costumes as in shows by Gary and Rita and German and Iveta.
I usually find latin shows less interesting.. the couples seem to rarely get out of their latin thing and do somethign different :-P

In general, it seems that Standard show numbers are not as creative as the other divisions. They usually just go out there and dance "classic" Standard. Gary and Rita's routine seems the exception rather than the norm.
depends on the couple. There are lots of creative standard shows out there.
I could say the latin couples just go out there and dance some latin - it would be mostly true as well.

GJB posts for me. I have seen far fewer out-of-the-box standard shows than the other way round. It's not a criticism, just an observation. Shrug.

And no, now that I think of it, I didn't see Jeremy dance, although I thought I saw him in the audience.
Rhythm had potential to be an interesting final since three of the top couples were absent - Tony and Elena, Inna and Evgeny and Felipe and Carolina. The couples that did make it, however, I don't think suprised anyone.. as usual, the judging was painfully predictible.

I would've put the Bulgarian couple (? I think? Radomir and Silviya) higher than 6th and Michael Neill/Danielle Wilson higher than Decho Kraev and Bree Watson. Danielle is a shining gem amongst the Rhythm ladies - but I think the opinion of the gentleman holds her back. She is in completely another stratosphere as compared to Bree (lovely dancer but still a ways to go.) The partnership is stronger, too - dynamic, connected, all the stuff you want.

The crowd seemed to enjoy Rhythm and I think many were looking forward to the first battle between Jose & Joanna and Emanuel & Julia. LOTS of Jose fans !

excellent comparison;) - then . . . their trophies continue to have the same unique m-e-t-a-l-i-c qualities?!?!

Did anybody see Jeremy & Anna? Website says they didn't get any callbacks even for the semi which doesn't seem right. I'll ask Jeremy when I see him tomorrow but in the meantime I'm just wondering if something happened and they didn't get to compete..
Jeremy & Anna were there, but she said she was not feeling well the three days leading up to Sunday night. Too bad because I really wanted to see them dance! They are really coordinaed as a couple:)
I have lots of pics of the Pro Rhythm that will be going up on my site soon, hopefully within the week.
Just a side note...I had never seen Jose DeCamps dance Mambo before, and I was thoroughly impressed with his characterization and choreography! I wanted to see more! Overall, I think all the couples really stepped it up and it was exciting to watch!

I would have loved to see that final. It wasn't obvious to me that Jose/Joanna would finish above Emmanuel/Julia. I would have really enjoyed seeing them battle it out.
I would even more love to see these newer couples go head to head with the aforementioned established couples. I wonder which comp to aim for in order to see that. USDSC? Ohio?

Thanks for the info, Natalka. I didn't mean to draw attention to their absence and I'm sorry to hear that Anna is not well.
On another note, I can't wait to see the pics! Pro Rhythm sure was exciting at this comp.

Thanx to Gary for moving this comp into the forefront webwise - I found it amazing that all comps use the same comp program ("Comp Manager") but NO comp ever simply hit 'output' and uploaded the results to the internet. .
Philadelphia Festival & Atlantic Coast Championships did it last year, and this year. APRIL 2007. I find it amazing that to make a blanket statement, that NO comp ever did this, should be prefaced with the disclaimer, "as far as I know", or something to that nature.

You're welcome. Actually, Anna felt great that night and was in the ballroom, just not up to dancing. I heard there is a little flu virus of some sort running around and a couple people I know have been sick in the past two weeks...maybe that's what it was...

Anyway, thanx gary.

Jose has twice been World Mambo Champion and many of us have waited for literally years for him to find the right partner and earn his place as the US Rhythm Champion. We will be screaming and cheering for him in the months ahead. He is an extraordinary talent and terrific person who cares enormously about dance; great supportive teacher also. If you look at the marks you wlll see how clear their victory was. I thought he had won from the first step; to me that Final had an air of magic..OK , so I am HUGE fan!

I agree totally with you; Jose is an awesome talent and good-hearted person. He's successful in Rhythm AND Latin...amazing. If I get the chance to go to USDSC, I'm definitely going to watch the Rhythm and Mambo championships.
BTW, did anyone else besides me notice that Bob Powers was in the ballroom on Sunday night? Watching the Rhythm comp with all of us...

Yep I saw him and there was some irony there. For those of you who know their history, Bob had said for years that he could or would not retire until there was someone worthy to take the title and that, in his opinion, that would be Jose Decamps. At the time Jose either did not have the right partner or was between partners and Bob eventually retired with Julia. So there he was, only now he obviously had to hope Jose would lose and Julia and Emmanuel win.

Just saw a few videos of Jose/Joanna and Emmanuel/Julia. Not even close. Jose/Joanna were clear winners technically and artistically. They had a much better connection and looked a lot cleaner. Sorry to say this but I felt like Emmanuel/Joanna looked rough and way too aggressive. I'm not putting this in words well but it seems like they were fighting each other rather than using each other's energy. The power was undoubtedly there but not channeled correctly.
I think Jose/Joanna will continue to place above Emmanuel/Julia.

I agree with TufTuf - it didn't seem like much of a contest, to tell you the truth. At least everybody was dancing really hard, which is something that hasn't happened in the style for a while, since there has been some stagnation. I enjoyed watching the top finalists really push.

I have been asking around and people I know assure me that both Tony and Elena and Felipe and Carolina have no intention of retiring, and I am sure Inna and her partner certainly don't. I thought perhaps one or two of the couples might choose this time to leave. What an event USDSC is going to have in Pro Rhythm this year!

It would be great if everyone hung around, yes - great for spectators, and great for the style. I think in rhythm the field is somewhat thin and frequently young and sometimes flashy couples make a splash too soon for their own good - it would be better for them to spend a few years being hungry and pushing themselves.
