Brujo brought this up in another thread and salsachinita thought it could make an interesting new topic. I agree, and so here goes...Why do you dance?
[I'll give my response later on...but first I want to hear why some other people dance first!]

Hmm, all I can say is, in many indigineous cultures/societies, the word "why" didn't exist. :o
Now as to "why" that is...

I was attracted to dance because of music. I like to listen to music whenever i can. Now, i can't help but work out what dance i can do to music on the radio / tv / movies etc. it just becomes second nature.

Hmmm... Hmmm...
At first it was for sheer enjoyment, the love of getting lost in a world of percussion, brass, and lyrics. Today I dance, because I can feel what it is like to knock on the doors of the soul and experience that around me through it.

1. Because it's pure joy
2. Because my older siblings laughed at me as a child when I danced. to them. Now I dance better than any of them.
3. To excel, and conquer my own fears.
4 To physically touch and connect with other people
5. To have a fun way to meet people
6. because I'm terrible at other organized sports
and many more

WEll the state of real traditional martial arts was so poor in San Antonio I decided I needed a new hobby- in many of the old karate texts they make mention here and there of dancing being an essentail for a good martial artist. Also figuring sinced I lived in texas and that most of my friends always going to country clubs I figured Texas two step would be usefull to learn. Little did I know that lurking in the studio would be all these latin dances that I didn't know about that would jump me and take me over. Salsa being my main dance now. Also I get hit less now and my partners are much easier on the eyes than they were in Karate. That path started abut 4.5 years go and I am just now becoming what I would deem as proficient in my dances.

:D For as long as I can remember, I feel music throughout my entire body. When I hear good music, I want to move to it and to interpret it through my movements. It is a way to become one with the music.

hmmm... why i dance in a room by myself is easy... I just feel like it!! Now as to what could possibly possess me to dance in front of others... well let's just hope that the social aspect of it is enough of a reason at least to get me through the beginning phase...
I read something about dancing/self confidence, and it says that dancing is basically the most basic way to express our enjoyment of music. Well, music is pretty much my greatest love, so there's another good reason. Only at this point the only thing I express is, "help i don't know how to dance" lol. But you know... down the road...

You know, I was going to write the same thing! :) I've never been able to just listen to music -- it urges me to move my body. Dance to me is simply this instinctive reaction given a more defined form.
I didn't realise what fun partner dancing was until I took up salsa though. Before I started, I wasn't too keen on the idea because of the very fact that it's a partner dance. I only went to the class because it was the only regular dance class available in my local area. The sheer joy of sharing and shaping a dance with another person is intoxicating.

. . . because of the music . . . the music makes me do it.
Whenever I hear music . . . from Rap to Grunge to Latin to Swing . . . I cannot control my body, which includes my feet. I've turned this reaction to music into another passion . . . DANCING!
I can be in a "power" meeting and hear a car go down the street with only the thumping bass being loud enough for the whole world to hear, and I cannot sit still. My feet are moving, my mind is racing with dance moves in my head.
How can anyone sit still when any kind of music is within listening range?
Even when I'm "playing" my guitar, I'm "on stage" dancing . . .
I saw the movie "requiem for a dream" the other day and one of the character was excited about being on a t.v. gameshow, when asked why she replied--
"It's a reason to get up in the morning, it's a reason to lose weight, it's a reason to look good in my red dress"
At that moment I couldn't help but think of this thread.

Ok, my turn to reply (to something I've kinda started).
I dance salsa to unite my soul with my love of the music (& lifestyle).
I strive to be a better dancer (technically & spiritually) as a promise to myself.
I dance to make connections/communicate with others.
I dance to express my gratitude to life (that I CAN dance).
I dance to prove a point (HERE is to everyone who didn't think I could).
I dance to learn about myself & others.

I started dancing at the age of 9. I had been playing netball and was all arms and legs on the court, so mum and dad decided that I should go to jazz classes to improve my co-ordination.
They dragged me kicking and screaming to my first class but when they came back to pick me up, I wouldn't leave. Have been in love with dance ever since. Every type of dance.
I am a generally fairly shy sort of person, and I feel that dance gives me the freedom to express myself without saying anything, which suits me perfectly.

When I dance, it's a time just for me. It's a time when all is right with the world...no matter what type of day I've had. It's a time to run free with my emotions and just release my frustrations for physically shout out my joy. It's just...living.

I dance to connect with others - sometimes I feel so isolated just going back and forth from school to work, that dancing is the only time when I can reach out, meet new people, and reconnect with friends.
I dance for the joy of movement!
I dance because I crave the music! :D
I dance because I love the feeling of learning something new, and discovering that I can do something I never knew I could do!

I adore the music.
It's a great way to exercise.
Also is a great way to meet people who have the same interest... just like here in DF. :)

I dance because if I don't, I'll die. If I could put what I feel into words, I wouldn't have to dance. Addicted

I dance to celebrate!
(My family and friends seem to always have to something to celebrate)(every weekend it seems!)
It just seems natural. (almost second nature.)
I started when I was about 8 or 9 years old break dancing, then on to hip-hop, techno (kinda of like break dancing & pop locking.)
It doesn't matter I love them all
Rancheras, Cumbias, Merengue, Salsa & Bachata
I'd like one day to learn some cha cha cha.
I think as long as I can still walk I will always dance! 8)

I have to...everyone needs a creative outlet...I have many. I also like to meet new and interesting people. Oh, and as a history buff, I enjoy participating in activities originating long ago. It is pretty interesting discussing the Lindy Hop with my Grandma...who did it long ago. ;)
