View Full Version : Fav social dancing clip demonstrating musicality?
I was wondering if any of you have favorite clips of a couple demonstrating musicality in their dancing? Primarily thinking social dancing rather than performances...
Or if that's too hard, how about the name of an instructor/performer/dancer that you know that does this well. (I'll go first - I like Gordon Neil's musicality.)
Also.... in light of all the negativity that we've been having on this particular forum, no negativity/criticism allowed in this thread!

I like that famous "4am clip" from the LA congress a few years ago featuring Burju dancing with 4 different guys (two from Tropical Gem, Juan Matos and somebody else I don't know). I think Fernando Sosa stands out in that clip in terms of musicality.

Oh yeah! I know this clip - Beto had actually shown it to several of us. I really like that song, too!

I just love how Matos comes up with that bit of footwork that matches the percussion.

Ok, this isn't salsa, nor is it exactly social dancing, but I really like this clip of Myles and Tessa "Improvised WCS Demo #2 (Seattle)", found in the box at the bottom left-hand corner of this page:

I really love the little subtle bodywaves that they're incorporating into their dancing. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, it's really cool when a dancer does that. S/he'd have to know the song quite well to pull it off, I'd think.

Here's another of my favourite clips -- love the way Magna uses the music :D:

She's such an amazing dancer!
(on a side note, those comments on YouTube... lol)
(on another side note, I think I might've actually been there that night)

Regarding the comments on youtube--to quote a line from the Dave Chappelle Show: "Hate, hate, hate" (as in hating on them for no good reason)

Very nice! Two of the world's best salsa dancers and a great song! What more could you ask for?
(side note: seen plenty of Frankie video clips, but never this one. Thanks!)

I never realized Frankie's superpowers until I ordered his CD for 40$ I believe. I see things very differently now - a lot of dancing seems very boring and all :)

Heheh. On this side of the pond we have a dozen names for people like that and none of them is as polite as "hater" :-)

I love watching Frankie partner Nancy Ortiz here:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ml1eV3MrfUU
Each of them paying full attention to the other; each of them giving the other space to do their thing. IMO that's a master class in how to partner with style (I don't know what that guy at the end is doing). Plus Suzie's band pretty much cleans the floor with that song.
Dangerous!

Not to take anything away from Griselle and Frankie, certainly, Alex. I'd be worried about getting my hair caught, neck stuck, and arms sprained if I tried something like what they threw out there.

All this talk of musicality totally inspired me tonight while dancing (to Jimmy Bosch & co, no less!)...I kept paying attention to the music & all the different parts of it to hear where my own styling can come in to accentuate that part of the music. Who knows how clumsy or goofy it looked, but hey, it felt great!

If it feels great, you are doing it right, no matter what it looks like!

AlexSem, thanks for posting that Frankie clip, I hadn't seen it either. You're also right about Frankie's DVD. Every time I work out with that video I see new subtleties. It shows how you can dance to the music with every body part. If only I could move to NYC and take classes from him!
Oliver Pineda and partner are very musical in this video:

I do like how Oliver Pineda leads by using his partner's body. It isn't just the hands, but also stomach, shoulder, hips...a nice variety. Some followers geta little nervous when that happens. But if a follower is willing to listen to all signals openly it adds to the dancing. And I'm referring to other clips of this guy as well.
Yeah, I liked the vid! Very nice! (will check out the other clips, too)

Good! The whole point of this thread is to make us feel more comfortable experimenting with musicality.

That's Griselle Ponce. She's one of the few women to do a solo performance routine - and it's not too shabby either (it's amazing if you like performances, if you find them boring, it's still pretty good :P).
I really really REALLY LOVE the clip posted with Oliver, WWWWOW.

That's another one of his that I really enjoy :) Perhaps the camera angle is better?

I only recently "discovered" Fernando Sosa. Not sure if his name has ever floated around here... I assume "yes"? He's one of my new favorites now!

Yes, IMHO, Fernando Sosa falls in the "famous salsero" category. In fact he was one of the very first salseros mentioned in this thread. (q? He's still in Tropical Gem, right?)

There is a great track playing in this clip and the connection between the dancers is magnetic. At one point his glasses get knocked off; he catches them with his left and continues to lead a double turn with his right. Classic! :)
