Dancer's Presence

Could you always spot a dancer in the crowd of a few hundred people?

Imagine if you were in the crowd, alone, away from your home town, in a Salsa event. The music is hot, you wanna dance. You wanna get to know the local scene so you can get your fix.

You look around, no one is dancing yet. Then you see a few people who stand out of the crowd. They walk with a certain deliberate sense of assertiveness. Grace? They have this intense look, scanning the crowd, exactly the way you are.

They are searching for a partner, to make a connection. At least in the duration of the next song.

The music intensifies. You can't help but start moving to the beat. You have spotted each other. With an offer, and an acceptance, the rest is history.

Whether the encounter turns out to be magical, or forgetable, it's not relevant.

The point is, dancers have a presence. They queitly shine & give out vibes, almost magnetic, to draw in others who are after the same thing. A possibility/oppurtunity to get THAT fix.

What do you guys/gals think :wink: ?

If a man is enjoying a conversation or is not in the mood for dancing to a particular song it's difficult to tell. But if a man is standing/sitting/walking, actively looking around for a partner I would think that it be obvious? [shrug] This Tuesday salsa night there probably will be a lot of people who may not recognize me as kids are back from winter break!! I'll confirm this! :)

I definetly believe that you'll be able to recognize dancers for the most part. There is a certain intensity that can be seen in true dancers. There is just a vibe given off.

I believe it's easier seen in women over men. But there are men out there who display that intensity. I think those men are true dancers at heart.

Also, besides the sort-of vibe given off, you can also tell by the way the music moves them. If they move with the pulse of the music, that's also a give-away.

You're right in the assertiveness. Once a person builds confidence in themselves and they're dancing abilities, they exude an air of assertiveness you could say. Those people will do the asking to dance I believe.

Dancers also hold themselves differently than non-dancers I believe. They posture is stronger and more defined.

When dancers are and just watching, you can still tell who they are by their intensity of their gaze. Their eyes are glued to other dancers.

How very true passion... What I've found about salsa dancers in specific is that males stare at males and females stare at females dancing.

I really never noticed how true it was until one day a guy came up to me and asked, man, how do you every move like that? Wow!

From then on I started really noticing how true it was, that not only I stared at all the male dancers, but that dancers all seemed to stare at the same sex.

I think we are seeing ourselves in others, while analysing our own dancing (more or less).

I am drawing a parallel of dancing & martial art again. While we are admiring others, we've also put ourselves in the picture & eveluating our own level of achievement/enjoyment.

I completely agree with that! That's basically what I've done in the past (and still do) to try to improve on my own dancing.

I dance mostly salsa, and dabble in cha cha, along with some merengue and bachata. But I always have the desire to learn more and expand on my skills.

I actually love to immerge in what the dancers are feeling. Deeply looking at the aura they put forth. Seeing the depth into which they allow one another to entire each other’s world. It is such a sight of beauty to see 2 dancers completely transcend their patterns, steps, and technique, getting right into the core of dancing with one another and for one another. Sharing one love without being in love, without physical romance to push it passed casual and into meaningful, the one love they share to turn 2 dancers into one. Ohhh, what a sight! True though, I also look to pick up a move or two :wink:

Looking back on my last night out dancing. I was watching a couple dance, not to learn new moves, but because of the feelings emitted by their dancing. I was just glued to their togetherness and the way they moved as one.

Two moving as one.... you can't get any better than that.

When someone's dancing can bring out emotion in the onlookers, that is a beautiful thing. That's a level that when you're, like I said you can't get any better than that!

I always tell my students they can pick out dancers in a crowd. When we go to competitions you can sit in the hotel lobby and see the dancers. They have better posture, walk like they are gliding and are more socially interactive than the lessor humans. ( ha ha ) :wink:

You guys have made many good points here, particularly about watching the same sex, strange but true. I am a guy, and of course I like watching women dancing but I try to be careful and not Stare at them. When it comes to other guys I suppose it is easier to watch them, and if they realise you are watching they tend to show off even more !!, I know I do this when I dance !!

Reading some of the mails here alone are enough to make my heart beat faster, and my breath deaper. It also making me nervous for a show I am doing in front of 300 people this Friday, mainly dancers !!! The dancing I think I can handle, but the emotions are going to make me explode.

When I see a couple dance, the focus of my attention is largely determined by whether or not I've danced with the leader before. If I haven't, I tend to watch the leader to see if I want to dance with him later. If I already know the leader, I'm more likely to watch the follower to see how she responds to his lead and make a mental note of things I could try.

Hmmm... I also do that! I never really thought about it though. I guess I just do it subconsciously. I don´t look for new moves. I look for connection, lead, enjoyment, etc.

Regarding Salsachinita´s topic, I can usually tell if a person´s a good dancer or not just by looking at them. Good dancers have confidence in themselves. They walk in a confident way, they look forward rather than up or down, they have good posture, etc. They are relaxed because there´re a place where the feel comfortable, their in a dance environment... They have presence.

Bestest, of bestest wishes in your show, let that emotion roll all over your body, don't fight it just let it in. It is going to take you for the ride of your life. I wanna see it, I wanna see you explode with emotion, so much so that I can feel that emotion hit my persona as you radiate on that stage. Ahhhhhh... that is dancing :D

I wish I could just distinguish dancers from non-dancers! Sometimes I succeed, while other times, I fail... I find it particularly hard with latinos especially because they have that natural upper body movement going when they're grooving to the music alone. However, whether they can lead/dance is a different question all together..

seriously.. i dont think there's a way to know.. some got presence.. but may not be dancers alltogether.. again.. i've met many who 'talk the talk but can't walk the walk' not even crawl for that matter lol.. and others who u'd not look at twice.. but on the floor they metamorphosize 8) .. u know.. altho the perspective u described is very interesting.. it may be equated to a throw of dice in reality.. at least to me.. i dont expect
