View Full Version : How often?

The salsa fever (http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2013) thread has got me thinking...
Salseros -- how often do you go out to dance per week on average?
How often do you think you would dance if time/money was no object?
How often do you feel you should or need to dance?
My (non-dancing, salsa-hating) husband thinks I spend far too much time out dancing. He thinks it's beginning to take over my life. I disagree -- I only go out to a salsa club/event once (or sometimes twice) a weekend, maybe go to a class/practice session one weekend afternoon if there's time and, if I'm very very lucky, perhaps another 1-hour class during the week. This amounts to an average of two salsa sessions per week. Now, there are people I seem to bump into at almost every salsa club/event I go to, who are also taking a number of classes through the week. I don't think that's unusual among salsa dancers (and I'm talking about social dancers, not pros/competitors). As far as I'm concerned, my salsa addiction is pretty tame -- or am I just kidding myself?
I was talking to a salsa friend (who teaches but is not my teacher) the other night, and he was of the opinion that you needed to dance (be it at a club or in a class) at least twice a week if you wanted to be a better dancer; that dancing once a week was barely enough to stay at the same level. I certainly would put a lot more hours into it if I could.
What do you guys think?

Since my come-back two years ago, I've been dancing at least twice a week (once on weekend, once on week day) at clubs. I don't take classes or turn up to studio socials.
At most, Wed-Sun. Mon & Tue are rest nights (by circumstances, as no one does anything on these nights  ).
Cost....? Apart from Sat, most of the events are free 8) !
I am a self-confessed die-hard addict  .
(ooooh, I had one of those non-dancing, salsa-hating ex as well. That's why he became an ex 8) )

It got too expensive so I had to go from 7 nights a week   To 3 or 4 depending on who is playing at a club. :D :D
I've got a lill of that bug called addiction.

I agree that more then once a week really helps. When I had one week where I danced 3 times in 7 days I made a big leap in my skill level. However, I only have one regular salsa night over where I live, Tuesday. I do attend a rueda prctice on Thursdays, but, that's a little different. I'm trying to figure out a way to increase my salsa quota.
I have improved even though I have been restricted to once a week. The way is by feeding my addiction in other ways. Listening to the music constantly. That said I would prefer if I could get out at least 3 times a week.

Mmm,
I have been dancing for a few years now, and I have moved around so I have experienced a few Salsa droughts. I must say it has a times been hard to improve due to the quiet periods. I do recommend however, that you try to learn one thing every time you go out socially to dance. Maybe you see someone doing something you like, try it yourself, try it with your regular partners, try work it in in every dance that night(wont always work), then its part of you !!! and you get better.
:? I have to say though I am a guy, so maybe its easier for me than for a follower. But you can still ask your regulars for help. :D

I started out going once a week, when I had an ex who was a non-dancer. He started to question my going once a week. But eventually he understood because he knew of my love for dance, and how much a part of me it was.
But I must admit, that I was very happy to increase my number of dancing days once he became my ex. Now I'm up to 3 to 4 days a week, based on availability. I also try to go to as many congresses as I can, money and time permitting of course.
A lot of my non-salsa dancing friends think I'm crazy, but I tell them, you won't know until you go and try it out... it can happen to you too.
I think it's difficult for a salsa dancer to be in a relationship with someone who's not a dancer. As an addicted salsa dancer, the dance just becomes a part of their life and of who they are. A non-dancer, doesn't have the right psychology to see and understand that.
It's a very fine line, and difficult to balance. For those of you that do this, I give you a ton of credit.

In martial arts we used to tell people for any really level of proficiency you need practice 3 times a week or more. This seem to be on par for physical skills including dancing. The more practice obviously the better you will get of course. I am at the studio about 4 times a week and then we usually hit a club be it salsa or country, (depending on what dances we are in the mood to practice) at least twice a week as well.

I started out with classes that met once a week. After seeing a performance I got addicted and am now taking two, sometimes 3 classes a week with one night of social dancing as well. I'm the type of person that learns through constant repetition, so it's a must in order to advance in skill level. It's a strain on the wallet :( , but I figure it's well worth the investment. I'm a low level intermediate and can't seem to get enough.

Hiya volleybgrl! Welcome to the forums! :D
Where in Boston do you take lessons/go dancing? I didn't get started with dancing until long after I'd moved away from there, but have visited a couple of studios on some visits back...

I go through cycles. Right now I dance 3 nights a week and take no classes. When the weather warms up it usually goes to 5 nights a week. I'd dance every night if I had my way though!!

Hi,
This is a sub-set of the two issues present at the start of this thread, and may deserve it's own line. (hello David?)
The summary seems to be: dance 3-5 nights a week and you will improve. I agree. Also, the higher you go, the more days you need to keep the edge, and to get the same buzz . . . but to stick to the thread of this posting: the other aspect is that dancers usually end up without non-dancing partners. Not enough time for both, usually, especially as so many of us, it seems, are also professionals.
I've hardly had an SO from outside dancing, but have watched innumerable women disappear from dancing, to reappear months later, usually post-relationship. The dancing is always there, the partners not. Marriage is not a barrier to relationship termination, either.
My point is this, MacMoto: in the pursuit of your dancing, you may find that your SO, either 'casual' or spousal, will object to the point that it's either the dancing goes, or the SO goes. Dancing is not like other hobbies, in the main; there is an addictive quality to it, and like any other addiction, the activity will drive you to sacrifice much in it's pursuit.
Take care

Currently dancing 4 nights a week and Saturday afternoons as well. Having to cut back because of a financial restraint, but if I could afford to go to every class, have a private lesson every day, I would.

I dance about every night I'm not working. Averages out probably 4-5 nights a week, with wonderful peaks where I dance every night. I usually only salsa once or twice a week though. I figured once I spend an average of 20 hours a week dancing.

Right now i'm taking a salsa class and a ballroom class, so that's already two nights of dancing, then AT LEAST one more night a week going out to dance, though often more, so I average 3-4 times a week of dancing.
If time and money were no object I don't think i'd go dancing a lot more, but I would definately travel more/farther for it, try out many more different places.
