I'm running an event in a few months set during the Renaissance and people want to waltz. Yes I'm aware that Viennese waltz didn't evolve until the 18th century and the slow waltz until even later, but it's a game and we're okay with anachronism. It's feel, rather than accuracy, we're going for. And so:

I'm looking for waltz music that at least sounds like it could come from the time. So far all I've been able to find is Strauss and his ilk and while I love the music, the crowd just doesn't know Viennese. Does anyone have any period-style recommendations for slow waltz?

And yes, I've already checked the music guide.

I've heard some version of Scarborough Faire scored as a waltz which I believe dates from the correct era or even slightly before. I have several VWs from just before the Renaissance, but sounds like you need waltzes only...

I think Greensleeves is (or can be) a waltz. It was written by Henry VIII--can't get more Renaissance than that!

Mr. Beveridge's Maggot is a nice waltz from around the late 17th century. Might be a little slow but I'm sure you could speed it up a little. You can find it on the Pride and Prejudice (1995) and Emma (1996 with Gwyneth Paltrow) soundtracks. A lot of your ladies and other Jane-ites will recognize it as the music for Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's dance. For other dances/music from that period, look up English Country Dances/ing and Playford's Dancing Master.

No clue offhand, but I'll ask DH (the music major and pianist) about it. He's sure to have suggestions. I know he's working on a couple of waltzes/vw at the moment.

Maybe you could get him to record some Chopin on a harpsichord (or synth equiv). ;)

I have been wanting him to record music for me for the last...um...11? years. No such luck so far. I've really been wanting him to record some stuff (waltz and vw, in particular) in strict tempo, so I could use it for lessons.

A harpsichord would be icing on the cake. Loooooove the sound of a harpsichord.
