I've noticed that competition dresses seem to sell like hotcakes sometimes and other months you can't give them away  What is the secret here? Is there an on and off season? If so, when???

Supply and demand?

It would make sense. I imagine (though I'm in no way in the circuit) that dresses tend to be sold and bought more during the summer, when one gets ready for the next season, or perhaps right before major events. I have heard that designers get lots of commissions right before Blackpool.

I've heard a few of the posters comment about not going to as many competitions during the summer. I don't know the reasons why. Probably just relaxing more than anything. But if you go to different web sites, they will have dresses up all year round. There will always be a dress some place available to buy. ;)

Where do y'all have best luck selling your dresses? The forums, ebay, Craigslist, word of mouth at your studio? Word of mouth just in your local community of dancers (not necessarily limited to your studio)? Interested, as believe my mom still has several dresses to sell, and of course periodically does, as she makes new ones for herself and sister (or when someone doesn't come through with payment, though I think that's only happened once, and dress has since been sold to someone else).

best option to sell is everywhere :) and personal relationships can help a lot when people already know they can trust you.

I think that dancers wait until after Ohio to buy new dresses...I have talked to others and they seem to want to buy a dress for the next year then... I also agree that word of mouth is everything. I keep in contact with dancers that I have bought dresses from before constantly. We pass around pictures and forward them to friends that they might fit... Really seems to work good. Also, I have 3 dresses from pros that were sponsored dress that were worn only once.. Got them for killer prices.

I think that you have the best selling technique Kat (although, others are approaching)! You tend to branch out to get to know people, which probably widens your buyers. Your dresses are reasonable and in good quality. You are a very detailed with the dresses, and you let us know if it's been sold. Plus... I like being able to see the dresses in action! I love your action shots! ;)

Thank you! I try :)
I put a lot of effort.. The total # since Jan is 25 gowns :)
I've been getting lot of top dancers intersted in selling through me so now my dresses get nicer and nicer as well. and remain reasonable! Although the higher end is higher than it used to be for me

Lol... I was going to ask you how many gowns that you have sold, because I know from what I can tell so far that it had been a few. 25 gowns is amazing! And some customers might want the high end dresses. It just depends on probably the level that they are at and what have you. I don't need anything like that yet, but when I do get to that place, you will be one person that I will go to just because everything that I've said above. Plus, a majority of your gowns have been my size. I'm just not at that level yet to need them. Oh well. Maybe one day lol. ;)

Yes, when it comes time for me to buy a dress(later this year or first of next), I'm going straight to Kat. Too nervous to spend that much money going with someone that I dont know anything about! Although not sure I would ever be able to fit into the size dresses that Kat seems to get alot of....

Guess I'd better head for the elliptical and the weights and the bike....would have a much better chance of fitting into one of those dresses when the time came...

That probably means I really have to start to expand my size selection.. I do have a variety of sizes but not all the time.. I also seem to not have enough smooth gowns to offer.. Need to fix that somehow..

Are you allowed to take your dresses to comps to sell. We can here, but only a few at a time. If you wish to have alot of dresses on display at a comp, you can set up a stall, but I don't know what the terms, conditions, fees etc., are for this.

Or rather that I have to work on decreasing my size....lol! More motivation for me to get off my butt and work out and do more cardio....cant do anything about my height (am 5'3" w/o my heels) but I can certainly do something about the size!

I also seem to not have enough smooth gowns to offer.. Need to fix that somehow..

I'm hoping to compete in standard myself so there are no complaints here. And the dresses are gorgeous, btw!

sometimes, but I haven't had much success with that and its a huge hassle. Usually I would bring maybe 1 or 2 or dresses I talked about with someone before the competition to try on

5'3'' is not a problem, I have a few for that hight :) and they are all stretchy.. :) but I find fitting into a dress as a good motivation to make sure I eat better :)

So back to the question at hand.... has no one noticed on and off seasons? Other than right after Ohio SB?

I noticed that last few months of the year tend do be dead in terms of dress sales, and it tends to really pick up right after christmas and new year.. I didn't have any more or less sales around ohio...

I am planning to get a 2nd dress for smooth after OSB, but I think I will end up having it made. I have been browsing resale ads and I haven't seen abything which I like AND which will fit me.
