I have heard recently a version of La Cumparsita done to a completley differnt rhythm. Could this be habanera?

The habanera rhythm is underlying rhythm you hear in milonga. I don't see why they couldn't rearrange it with a habanera rhythm. I've heard other tango songs rearranged for one or the other.
Papam pam pam

That's what it sounds like when I fall downstairs at my home. :(

Bam badam bam Downstairs
Ah, newbie.... I see you have mastered the various rhythms that create the music of my inept stair climbing (while wearing shoes)
Papam pam pam (walking upwards and missing a step and tripping)
Pam pam pam pam (butt bouncing down each step as I fall, backwards)
Bam badam bam (arriving at the landing - butt, back, head, arms flop)
Though sometimes the "papam pam pam" is created when I trip over the pile of shoes that accumulates at the landing.
