who's going?

was checking deadline for entries -- pro-am appears to be august 4th.
i observed that there are no syllabus-level scholarships -- nothing for a bronze or silver national champion, just open... is that the way it always is, do ya know?

Laura

Yep, although I think there is a "Rising Star" Pro/Am event, too. But I could be confused, I've looked at so many competition web sites lately.

there are the open scholarships and "senior champsionships", which look like 3-dance events. i don't see any RS at this particular comp.

Laura
07-30-2007, 05:05 PM
Oh, I know what I was thinking...there are US National Pro/Am Championships, and also US Open to the World Pro/Am Championships. I knew there were two sets of events at this competition.

samina

I think you are correct Laura. There are Open to the World Pro/Am Rising Star events on Saturday of the comp (according to the schedule on the site).

I am planning to compete there. As for the name changes, you are right, from USBC to the unwieldy USDSC and now they are United States Dance Championship. Good thing they don't have expensive stationary and business cards! I still wish it were in the Miami area, I am not happy about going to Orlando. However, I am thrilled at how great this year's contests are playing out. The atmosphere in the ballroom should be electric, not that I expect any surprises in National Latin or National Standard, but in Rhythm and Smooth, oh boy! Anything is possible.

I seem to be somewhat fixated on this competition, but anyone want to make any predictions?

dance234
08-03-2007, 02:39 PM
Smooth - I honestly don't know. I hope there's a big shakeup, even though I think it's unlikely just because Things Aren't Done That Way.

Latin - In the US championship, Andrey and Elena will win. In the Open-to-the-Worlds, Max and Yulia will place ahead of them. (I don't know if any international couples will be attending, so I can't predict the overall results.) I hope that Boriana and Delyan can move up a notch or two - they've been dancing very very very well, improving in the way that only those hungry for a better slot can. The quality of movement there, musicality, physical conditioning, connection - it's outstanding.

In Latin RS, I don't know. The top 2 couples from two years ago, (1) Christian Baerens and Kristina Stakova, and (2) Jose with Cheryl Burke, are no more. Kristina has a new partner but I dont' know if they'd deign to do RS. Last year's RS second-place finishers were Lydia Petrigova and Alexander Senko.

I don't expect to see Pasha and Anya there - am I wrong about that? - so that would open up a slot in the US finals. I hope Anna Trebunskaya can make a good showing with her new partner.

Rhythm - I think Jose and Joanna will win. Nobody can touch them right now. If Tony and Elena actually appear, which I doubt (public pronouncements to the contrary aside) they'll be second. Third will be tough - I doubt Felipe and Carolina can best Emmanuel and Julia, but there's a lot of disapproval about the Emmanuel/Julia partnership (a prominent judge put them as SIXTH across the board in the Manhattan final - can you imagine?) Perhaps the judges will want to make a statement by picking a new golden couple and putting them ahead of Emmanuel/Julia *and* Felipe/Carolina, as a way of saying, "That's enough, y'all. Time for new blood." The problem is, I don't know who that would be. The next finalists aren't that impressive, and Danielle Wilson is held back by the disapproval over her partner.

Mambo - Jose and Joanna, not even a contest. I suspect there will be a strong winner, a couple of middling performances by top rhythm couples for whom mambo is not their specialty, and then a small burbling mass of very mediocre couples, as in the past couple of years. There is a big crop of rising-star level rhythm couples right now, dancers who could turn pro early because of the dearth of talent in Rhythm, and I have no idea who will rise to the top of the RS field.

Standard - not expecting any surprises.

dance 234, I see you are very knowledgeable and I like your reasoning. I agree with everything you say, except for Smooth. I do expect a shakeup, in the sense that I don't think Mazen and Irina will "inherit" the title. I think it could go to them, or Valentina/ Eddie (even though I have not even seen them) or, more to my liking, to JT and Thomas (who beat both couples recently), or Maria and Hunter OR... maybe Michelle and Kostadin, but they haven't even started! wish they would hurry up!

So what you're saying is that it would be something of an upset if Mazen and Irina did not inherit the title, correct?

Well they were right behind Maria and Hunter (who took time off while she had her baby) and Valentina and David, who do not dance together anymore, so they probably feel they have a great shot. I think there is no way to predict right now who will wind up where and I find that very exciting. I was thrilled to hear how positive you are about Jose and Joanna because I would be besides myself with joy if they won. I think Jose Decamps is one of our country's greatest gifts, and I have been waiting and waiting for him to find the right combination and be recognized for the artist he is.
The predictability of the Pro Standard division is stultifying, even if the dancing isn't.

Well, what I'd *like* to see in latin is Delyan and Boreana and Vaidas and Jurga place 3rd and 4th. I don't really care which of the top two lands in #1 and #2 (although it's getting old).

ya, they're in http://photos.yahoo.com/dancechamp8 in the Gowns album. I'm waiting for the ordered photos to come so that I can scan in the action photos to have better resolution. But the still shots of the gowns on the dummy should be good, as that's full resolution. You can double click to see the larger image, but it seems to take a while (dunno why...) I also have the Ad for the gown sale in the Events & Announcement section of DF.

Are you refering to Pro, Am or Pro-Am? This will be my first time competing at this but from what I've heard:

Pro - definitely big
Am - mid-to-big
Pro/Am - mid

As far as Pro/Am, which is where I fit in, I think OSB is the real national championship.

Liz- don't be nervous just dance the way you always do- Hotlanta is bigger in the pro-am field, I think that it's prestigious to attain a title though!

On that note- which comp is OSB? And why would you have to attain a title at one and not the other?

SDsalsaguy

OSB = Ohio Star Ball

The official national pro-am title comes from USDC (previously USBC and USDSC), but for pro-am the OSB attracts all the same top competitors and a larger field, so unofficially is considered the more important title by some.

I have never been to OSB - I obviously know about it - what happens is that I can't afford to go to both. (and Hotlanta in my Fav so I end up spending money to go to that which is in the middle of the two!) SO I ended up going and got 2 titles last year at USDC. I hate to think that it was not worth it, but then again it is the official title holder correct? Maybe I will have to go to both and compare this year. That is most likely why there are different winners- different competition attends both. I personally thought it was a smaller entry wise but the field and level of dancers was pretty tough and competitive. Was not a given that is for sure!

That's 27% over the total entries of 2006 and more than DOUBLE the final entry count of 2005.
The fabulous Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando is the setting for this year's event and there are only a limited number of hotel rooms available as dancers and spectators from across the globe make their way to Orlando for the 2007 United States Dance Championships. Don't miss out on history in the making. Click Here (http://www.unitedstatesdancechampionships.com/index.cfm/showsection/event_information/page.htm) for more information on hotel reservations.
We are still taking advance ticket orders. ALL advance ticket orders must be received in our offices no later than Friday, August 31st. Click Here (http://www.unitedstatesdancechampionships.com/index.cfm/showsection/tickets_schedule/page.htm) for more information and to print a ticket order form. After August 31st tickets must be purchased in person at the USDC Competition Registration Desk at the Royal Pacific in Orlando. No phone orders will be accepted. The USDC Registration Desk will be open beginning Monday, September 3rd at approximately 12 Noon.
We are looking forward to a spectacular year and hope to see you in Orlando!!

I like it except that my arm looks fat and lumpy... but it really is just my thigh calf and foot that appear under my arm... I need to edit it out.

for what it's worth, the lumps are clearly not your arm.

I am just venting here, as only you nice people on this forum will understand. I hurt myself practicing onTuesday and it is still pretty bad, right now I can't dance at all so competing next week is looking very doubtful. Family and friends are sympathetic but don't really understand how disappointed I am. Also I am on the older side of the age spectrum and it terrifies me that time may be running out. I just need to reach out and tell someone.

This happened to me right before Manhattan this year, Gingerbread. I just had to stop practicing for the entire week before and get a massage before heading down for the 5+ hour car trip. I muddled through it, although in pain again afterwards. I'm not sure which part of you is hurting, but maybe you can just try to lay off for the week and see how you feel. If it's not too bad, your adrenaline should help you through it. Of course, if it's still bad next week.....don't want to risk hurting yourself further.

Do what the docs say (and stretch, etc.) and it can get better even if its quite a shocker right now - important is that you continue your positive attitude - I had sciatica with extreme pain even when not walking a little over a year ago, but now its subsided - there's hope!

Just wondering how you are doing Gingerbread....

You guys rock! I cannot tell you how much your messages have meant. I have had much massage therapy and yes, stretching and medicine, and I am feeling mcuh better. We did a short practice on sunday, I didn't try to move full out. The interesting part to me is that it bothered me when we began but felt better the more I moved. I definitely need the muscles to be warm. Turns out my IT band and back muscles were very tight, so I am massaging whatever I can myself and using heat and anti-inflammatories and even that foul smelling Tiger Balm (athough I don't think I would impose that on my pro). At the end of the lesson we decided I should dance, so here I am on Monday night packing. I feel like a kid who had Christmas canceled and then was told it was happening after all. I am concentrating on staying positive. Of course it is not all better, but hopefully I will be able to do what my teacher said the other day, "I want you to do this, but I want even more for you to enjoy yourself and be happy out on the floor." I will take my passon for dance with me and the good vibes all of you have sent me, which I know have done their magic. My teacher is already there and called to tell me the resort is very beautiful but that it's a long walk to the ballroom (you have to even go outside for a bit). HAVE FUN EVERYONE, AND GOOD LUCK!

The top two couples, Mayo Alanen & Lisa Vogel and Gary McIntyre & Susan Kirklin, really stood out from the rest for me; much more connected and in sync with each other than the other couples.

In the RS Latin Andre Strinadko & Olga Kinnard were for me clear stand outs, dancing far cleaner, more precisely, and more relaxed than the rest of the final. Sergey Korshunov & Michelle Hafle also caught my eye, excellent when 'together' but lacking consistency at times.

I'm guessing that it's because the competition is still in progress (meaning, the Latin half hasn't been danced yet) that the results of the Standard haven't been announced. I haven't checked the NDCA rule book, but I know in USA Dance they aren't supposed to give results half way through.

Congrats to Mayo and Lisa! Definitely one of my favorite couples dancing smooth right now. I had trouble keeping track of them in the semi-final at Embassy. Not sure if they had a rough round or if it was dress color issue. When Lisa is wearing her emerald green dress I can't seem to take my eyes off this couple.

I really like them too - she is a special dancer.

I agree! She has such command and presence. There are times out there when I feel like she demands the attention of everyone in the room and gets it!

I also love their bold choices in their choreography. They start their waltz with this huge standing foot spin and have some amazing moments in their tango and foxtrot as well.

Excited to see how they can take this momentum into the Open category.

I wish I was there to watch the Open Smooth live. The result at Embassy was so close. (JT & Tomas - 2212, Eddie & Valentina - 1133, Hunter & Maria 3321)

With one or two top couples added to the mix, it seems like it is anyone's event to win which is quite rare in dancesport.

Well today was a hoot. I did not have any dancing to do so after a lazy morning some friends and I went over to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.

home of my beloved hulk :sigh:

did you ride it, larinda? :)

Larinda McRaven
09-06-2007, 11:05 PM
Hulk? You betcha! I assumed it would be a regular coaster... slow to climb and then you crest the hill and off you go. But NNNOOOOOOOO.... you start timid and then you SHOOT OFF LIKE A ROCKET!! WWOOO HOOOO! And the Fantastic Four up and down thingie, and Spiderman (twice! forgot the 3d glasses the first time) and two water rides, the Dueling Dragon Coaster, and ended the day with a nice little Star Bellied Sneetch train ride with the toddlers just to relax a bit.

Was there a collision in rythym? Looks like it in looking at some of the pictures (which are GREAT by the way). Love to look at all the styles of dresses, although there's one that has feathers up the front and around the neck (Joanna's green dress) and I'm quite sure I would go nuts having feathers like that around my face. But, then again, that's why she's a pro and I'm not ;) (well, one of the many reasons).

Interesting Observation - actually this one was from my dance partner (and who'd have thought a guy would have so much insight and paid much attention on 'dresses'? LOL!)

He noticed that Mikhail Adeev & Anatasia showed up a lot better in their Semi-Final gown in Embassy (the dark pink one) than the first 2 rounds (yellow gown).

So I looked at the videos from USDSC. Wow! Love that old fashion feather gown Anatasia has on! It really enhanced the couple dancing. They look huge (in a good way, not their body size of course :)) on the floor.

So it's not just color choice because of Yellow is a brighter color than the colors of Anatasia's other gowns. But the overall design and effect of a gown really affected the look and the flow of a couple, no matter how strong of dancers they are!

Of course, we kind of know that, but to have this strong visual comparison, it makes me as a lady think twice about my gown choice from now on :)

People often think that we're vain & change gowns often. Now I have justification to do so! Not just fu fu stuff :)

Flew into Orlando, competed, left the next day (*phew* barely have time to catch my breath)!! The venue was great! Ample space for competitors and spectators. There's even a practice room which was greatly appreciated. Is it just me or was the music super loud?! This is my first time to the USBC and it's definitely one of my favorites so far. Good luck to all DF-ers who are still competing and congrats to those who have already competed.

Thanks Chris for the photos and videos! I didn't order my video and was glad that you caught about 30-sec of the jive. Cheers!

Have these ladies the fame and status of Julia? Once artists reach certain prominent levels, they tend to guard their territory fiercely. I used to be a Julia's grasshopper and she my master. I worship her. If her hallowed name is misspelled, it's understudy's wholesome duty to try to correct it. Do you agree?

I didn't watch this event "live". However, from what I've seen of the Max/Yulia and Andre/Elena rivalry, the judging panel sometimes really favors a strong female dancer and when this happens, I think Max/Yulia will place above Andre/Elena. Elena is a very fluid dancer but Yulia is very talented and she's one of the very few female dancers who can actually compensate (not the best word to use here I know) for the man. For me, Andre's dancing clearly surpasses Max's but Yulia really makes a significant difference to the partnership.

Sometimes, it's all about balance too. Max and Yulia do look more like a balanced couple and hence perhaps they can convey the man/woman relationship better on the floor. Personally, my vote goes to Andre/Elena because I like a stronger male dancer. I can totally understand Nik's sentiment (Andre/Elena are his coaches) so it's no wonder his comment was a little heated. It's not a big deal really.

Agree with your assessment overall. I just think Yulia brings to the table complete uniqueness, while others male and female in two partnerships are just good dancers. The partnership definetely looks more cohesive on some days.

But not to disgree with you strongly, it is just I have a completely different image for the wod FLUID. I think water, I think breath, ocean, rising and falling, shape flow, just flow itself, neverending, oozing in and out, sensuality, organic, natural. And for me, none of those words describe Elena's dancing. Just good supportive to partner dancing.

Thx Chris for posting Pro/Am videos. Very seldom would we get a chance to take a close look at these competitors. I must say Klair Christiani looked fabulous & probably deserved higher placement! She looked like a pro out there, and the partnership was very balanced - meaning they looked like professional couple.

I thought Giampiero & his lady, Janet also looked very strong.

Always loved Beth Overley, and she showed up strong with Pro Sergei Berzodnov.

Placements... All finalists were good, but I probably would have given different placements. Of course, we all know all too well that the Pros have a lot to do with it, unfortunately, because they are really just that good!
