View Full Version : What's the sexiest dance?

Ok, I know this is going to cause debate and I'm probably going to be flogged at dawn, but what do you consider the sexiest dance?
To me, it is unquestionably the Argentine Tango, moreso than the Rumba (kids' stuff) :).
I was at a milonga on the weekend and there was this AMAZING show and, having downloaded several AT videos that actually made me blush (I'm not kidding, they were seriously, seriously sexy), I gotta say, I've never seen or felt a dance sexier, including salsa, which I adore and always considered kinda flirty.
Ok, who's the first to fire? :)

Dances aren't sexy. Dancers can be, in pretty much any dance. I wouldn't go any further than saying that in a broad sense, slower music lends itself more readily to dancers projecting "sexiness", and that any "sexiness" in other people's dancing is a highly subjective personal judgement in any case.

While I understand and appreciate your point, Jon, even the sexiest person doing a cheeky cha cha or someone innately sexy doing a line dance doesn't quite project the air I'm talking about.
Admittedly there are some pretty average Argentine Tangos, but, equally there are some mind-bogglingly fabulous, sexy ones too. Fans of Forever Tango (http://www.showgate.com/tango/) will no doubt agree.
You're right about what's considered sexy to one person not necessarily having the same effect on another, but c'mon...some things are unequivocally sexy  !

I'm not seeing how this connects to the topic at hand. What you were originally asking was what dance was the sexiest. No matter the answer, surely there are plenty of un-sexy instances of any dance form as well.

Regardless of a dancer's "sexiness" or lack thereof, what would you consider the sexiest dance, Jon? The one dance that even the unsexiest person might do with a degree of appeal and not be able to help it?

The Lambada, but that's seldom done anymore as far as I know.

Hmmm...actually, Spitfire, have a look at this link to Zouk, (http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2124) a new millennium version of the lambada! :)

I do not believe there is a meaningful answer to the question as phrased. Just as with "intelligence" (re which I recommend Gould's The Mismeasure of Man), attempts to reduce a complex multidimensional quantity like "sexiness" to a single number are likely to reveal more about the biases of the person performing the measurement than the thing being measured.
Personally I find it easiest to dance sensually in WCS and Blues dancing, but that's simply a matter of what I'm familiar with and what sort of music I connect with. If I focused more on ballroom dancing I suspect the answer would be Bolero. If I didn't find pop music so cheesy it might well be NC2S. Etc.

I'd have to say West Coast Swing, Hustle and Rhumba

Sexy or sensual? I can't help this!! To me they are different. I find that what makes the dance sensual is the music. Slower music as it allows more time for expression that can be observed by others. I would say the rhumba is sensual.

although he does nothing for me, I know women who drool over Joaquin Cortes, the impressive Flamenco dancer.
Once you get past mere admiration of the body its then a case of how its being used. Salsa is too bouncy to be really sexy. Its like saying sex is fun.
Its not. Real sex is about passion, passion that is barely under control, simmerring and sultry, (like when the Borg Queen blows on Data's square inch of skin) alluring yet potentially devastating. At has the potential for these qualities. Flamenco has the firery side of it.

This is a great topic. Not that I'm actually going to answer the question LOL. But sexy? Hmm. I guess it depends.
To me, sexy has many different facets, depending on who's involved, when, where moods, etc. Sexy can be angry, playful, silly, fun, searing, slow and sensual, blatant, subtle, you name it. Sex is in the mind long before it's in the body (at least for me LOL), and it can take any form my mind comes up with, and that's a lot of forms.
So in that sense, I guess any dance has the potential to be a sexy dance, depending. I'm still thinking about this, though. Will post more later. 9:00 AM sitting at the computer terminal is not my preferred time or place to be thinking sexy.

Hey wait a second. I was just getting ready to vote for bolero, when I realized this was in the Argentine tango forum. Hmm. What to do?
I guess I'll have to vote for both dances, then. Bolero, when done well (which it often isn't), is a tres sexy dance. Lots of hints, and some smoldering sexuality. And all that into and out of body contact is way cool.
But, if you're giong for the blistering hot stuff, I guess Argentine tango is a good candidate. *shrug* Oh the price we pay for diplomacy!

Jenn, forget diplomacy...it was a general question...I just figured that AT people might understand what I meant about finding the AT incredibly sexy!
So, c'mon...'fess up! :)

I can dance salsa without any bounce, with pauses, without the basic step at some times. The dance is what you make of it. :)

I agree with Sagitta, I have experienced a very smooth and sensual salsa dancer with one particular man. It was beautiful. At times he would interject some subtle brushing touches with his body or hand or a move that pulled you decively in close with a pause and direct eye contact. Wow
I am begin to become curious about AT. From the descriptions I have read it sounds great, and that is an understatement.

Can see that it appears like AT has more sexiness potential but really i think it comes down to the ppl, the chemistry, the music, the mood, the something when it all clicks. And yes what some find sexy, others find boring or conversly trashy. Ahh and another ingredient is of course the watcher/voyeur and what they themselves bring in terms of meanings and impact re sexiness.
Something i wonder tho'..... how do you know if you are oozing the sexiness you really want to be ...OR.... just looking plainly all "wrong" - i know, just let it flow naturally but you know those times of performing. You see some ppl just getting it sooo right and others... lol

To see, hear, and move directly from the soul results in the magic more often then any other technique I have tried.
I think the sexiest dance is tango (I do American Style tango).
My teacher likes to describe his part as big jungle cat (him) hunting little furry bunny (me). I like to think of it as ice princess (me) telling low life cretin (him) oh no, you can't have me. Together, the effect can be powerful; sometimes it's like we have a little war zone going on. But, it works for us.

It's just roles we're playing, the storyline of the dance. The more agressive he acts, and the more aloof & disdainful I act, the better the character of our dance is to watch. I hope this makes sense. :D

Here ve haf zer classic psycho- archtypes: the man referrring to zer little furry bunny clearly has some suppressed childhood trauma, ver his moder or fader took avay his favourite teddy bear, and he is still, in his subconcious, searching for the teddy bear, vid zer jungle cat being zer ego overcompensating.
Zer voman, is living out another childhood fantasy, particular to liddle girls, who as Charles Aznerballs sang 'grow bigger every day' vid an inherent conflict vid zer woman. Most archetyptal princesses need rescuing, but zis one vants to stay remote in for example like Rapunzel in her tower; ergo she vants to be desired but not consumed by a masculine force. Zer is a subconsious need to emasculate zer man. For anudder example she is like zer Snow Qveen, very beautiful but also cruel to liddle boys*

I don't know if I could pick just one dance that is sexy. Cha-cha is definitely sexy-- in the playful sexy way. Bolero definitely is. Rumba can be. Argentine Tango, the little of it that I have done, has definitely screamed sexy at me. Ah, I guess my answer is that it depends on my mood, my partner, and the song that it playing. :D

I'd say AT - the music and movements are very sexy
WCS is very sexy as well, but that is lost on most beginners

I believe it was Ron Montez who counted the basic tango timing as "Stalk her (S). Stalk her (S). Drag her (Q) into (Q) the cave (S)."

Rhumba is sexy; same closeness than salsa but slower...
Cha-cha ? Not so; too quick; playful, and exciting, yes.
West Coast swing, yes; it's kindda rock in slow motion.
A.T ? The first time I saw it was in Sally Potter's movie, and then I found it weird and complicated but certainly not sexy. Maybe it's because I don't find Sally sexy. Even now, I can't think of a sexy couple of A.T performers. Osvaldo and Lorena, maybe; but it's only Lorena, Osvaldo is as sexy as dead fish.

Hi eviane and welcome to DF!
I know nothing about cumbia. What is it?
People say tango is so sexy. I can not understand why. OK I am a tango n00b but... sensual, OK I can buy that. Maybe. But sexy?

I dance mostly Salsa these days, but classically trained in others. I got hooked on Salsa, but I always wanted to learn AT, especially after the inspiration of "Forever Tango." What an amazing group of dancers! In my opinion, sexy is what sexy does. Although, certain dances does ooze sexiness or sensuality like AT, Salsa & others. But, from a spectators point of view. Argentine Tango is on top of the list with some others previously mentioned. Salsa is a really sexy dance when it's done to slower music and dancers are more lyrical. But, lately, newer forms of Salsa are taking over and the music is fast. It's turned much into a speed and skills test, now. The sexiness is someone lost and more technique and showmanship is added into it.

@blue and sagitta:
thank you!
cumbia was first brought to colombia by the africans, but since then it has spread throughout south-america.. it's a pretty trendy rythm i'd say, i know a colombian girl who says that it's the south-american hip hop.
it's quite a slow rythm compared to salsa and merengue.. hm i can give you some names of songs for you to download:
Kumbia Kings - Fuego
Pibes Chorros - Mabel
well these are 2 examples of what i found when i typed in ''cumbia'' in my kazaa. tell me if you like it!
but i've been to parties, and heard much more 'modern' cumbia.. but i haven't been able to find out what they're called.. and i have no idea about which cumbia songs are ''new'' or which ones are being played now in discos since i don't live in south-america... can anyone help?? i'd be grateful!
