How does one lead delayed walks in rumba (forward and backward)?

Presumably the lead stops the followers body movement after she has started the leg action, such that the leg keeps going but the body weight is placed back on the original foot. I am looking for help on how the lead can accomplish such a thing efficiently.

Thanks!

Mostly, it's connection. Both partners have to be well forward over their axies. As the lady moves through her core, the lead resists until the follow is well into the movement. By releasing as she is at teh apex of the movement, the walk is then allowed to happen. Do this without wasted and unnecessary movement of the arms.
