Just wondering does anyone here have any experience with capturing VHS sources to either Final Cut Express or Final Cut Studio (obviously on a Mac)?
Background. I semi-routinely use iMovie 06 and FCP5 (within FCS1) for putting together DVD compilations of video from competitions. At most collegiate competitions I shoot miniDV so importing to either tool chain is straight forward, with FCP being slightly harder.
For non-collegiate competitions I typically have to use the videographer at the event and end up with a VHS tape. Now iMovie has no problem capturing the video stream from the VCR patched through a camcorder connected to the computer. However FCE/FCP both tend to balk at this since there's no real timecode being laid down. The only workaround I had found was to record from the VCR to a miniDV tape... rewind, the miniDV tape and then import that...
And of course iMovie captuers to a format thats not usable by FCE/P so you can't use use the consumer app to capture data for the professional/prosumer app. So in the past I've been using iMovie more and more since the double capture process was too painful, even though I prefer the workflow of FCE/P.
Now everything has changed... the new iMovie 08 is useless for my needs.. Apple has yanked out most of the functionality I need or like, in favor of courting the youtube content producing crowd. So I foresee that I'll be switching back to FCE/P for my default video editing.... While I can stick with iMove 06, it does have other bugs that I wish would be fixed... but since iMovie 08 is a new codebase 06 is effectively EOL....
Does anyone know a better workflow for getting VHS source data into FCE or FCP?
Thanks
