Thought I'd make a thread for any of us who want to talk about the upcoming NFL season.

What are your predictions? Who is your favorite team? Do you play Fantasy Football?

tj

Predictions:
Division winners:

AFC
East - Patriots
North - Ravens
South - Colts
West - Chargers

Wild card teams - Broncos & Bengals

NFC
East - Cowboys
North - Bears
South - Panthers
West - (tough call) Rams?

Wild card - Saints, Eagles

Superbowl winner? Patriots

(...I'm rooting for the Broncos. But Jay Cutler's still too raw to take them all the way.)

I must admit I watched the Broncos game last night, and then watched SYTYCD after the first hour of the game. Jay Cutler scrambled for about 15-20 yds and got hit pretty hard. I was holding my breath when I saw that, but he was fine afterwards.

I'm a bit concerned about the Broncos defense. They looked a little shaky, but maybe it's just a matter of getting used to the new scheme.

@ tj:

I wouldn't say that I'm actually a Bronco FAN persay. I actually never watched football at all until a couple of years ago, and I'm still just learning how it works.

SO is a hs football coach and a big Bronco fan, so I'm trying to get into it (I've never been anti-football, just never had a reason to care - grew up watching the Yankees with my dad).

I did watch the game last night (even the 4th qtr after SO fell asleep! :)). Besides, got to have some CO pride!

I like him already! And good for you to show interest.

I make no predictions about the upcoming season. I am a Dolphins fan (this season's gonna be a train wreck), though I often root for the Broncos and Steelers too. I am playing Fantasy Football for the first time ever this season.

I haven't been keeping track of the Dolphins (yet). Is Ronnie Brown still slated to be the starting RB? Didn't they get him some competition?

Good luck! Don't forget to keep track of those late injuries, and make sure to get yourself a decent (hopefully up-to-date) magazine.

Ronnie Brown is the starter. They drafted Lorenzo Booker as a smaller, faster runner (kind of like Maurice Jones-Drew) to change up the running game or when Ronnie needs a break. He can also catch pretty well too apparently

I don't know anything about the players anymore as I haven't kept up since I moved to NJ 20+ years ago. But, I will ALWAYS be a Broncos fan. When I lived in Denver I had season tickets and went to most every home game. It was GREAT fun!!!

Yeah, I'm ready for some football, but can't really get into pre-season.

Most experts are picking the Patriots to win it all this season.

Being a Packers fan I'm likely to be asked the question so here's my answer in advance - if the team does not do well then it will probably be Brett Favre's final year, but if they do well he may just hang around.

Way back when I was a kid and lived in San Francisco I was taken to see the 49ers fairly often. I still remember the fun, the cheerleaders and the Red Indian. So, I guess they are the team for me but unfortunately your football isn't shown on our TV very often. And I don't really understand the rules as I was young when I went to the games.
Have any of you seen Aust football or Rugby? Very different and no padding.

I am ready for football, but I don't have much interest in the NFL. I really like High School and college football, but rarely watch the pros. Packers are my favortie team, because when they play, there is very little traffic in the area and that is great for going for a bike ride. I live 60 miles from Green Bay.

:) It was a close call - the special teams gave up a TD, and the Broncos were down most of the game. They finally scored a TD, but didn't make the 2 pt. conversion to tie it up. With <2 minutes, Cutler drove them to FG range (converting on 4th down twice), where Elam finally (he missed 2 earlier) hit a FG with no time remaining.

Talk about exciting!

Defense did much better than what they showed in the preseason. Travis Henry had a great game, too.

I heard on the radio this AM that the Pats may have been videotaping opponents' coaches in an attempt to steal signs à la baseball. Apparently the commissioner's office confiscated a camcorder and videotape from a Pats employee on the sideline of the Jets game...the pentalty could be fines and up to loss of a 1st or 2nd round draft pick.

tj
09-11-2007, 10:46 AM

Saints? Their offense has been stalled so far, plus their corners keep getting beat. It seems like they alone are keeping Joey Galloway relevant since they can't stop the guy.

I had pegged next weeks Packers vs. Chargers game as a loss for the Pack, but with the Chargers looking as they have and the game in Lambeau field they have a good chance. Didn't think LT would go two games with less than 100 yards combined if I'm not mistaken.

According to the comments, the Duck got suspended...

Rocky, the mountain lion mascot for the Denver Nuggets, used to play around with Charles Barkeley and pretend to get beaten up by him. That was obvious (and funny) play-acting. The above clip certainly didn't look that way with those two mascots.

It'll be a good test for the Packers' D, who have been getting a lot of well deserved props for their play.

Maybe it's just that everyone has Norv Turner's schemes figured out, rather than the previous regime's?

Yeah, I think the Broncos are distressingly average. At least at this point of the season. The Run D has been bad (27th in the league), and until they fix it, they'll be lucky to be .500 with two tough games coming up: Indy & SD.

At least the Chargers are having some major issues, too. Good job by Favre and crew on their win. Favre really shredded that Charger D.

When I saw the graphic, it looked like they still have 3 games against some good opponents (@Indy being the hardest for them), plus they still need to beat all the teams they're supposed to beat. It makes for a fun discussion, but IMHO, it's way early to be thinking that. Plus, hey, Indy could conceivably do it, too.

Eh, just wait til he starts throwing more pickles.

I keep waiting for that blow-up, but so far, so good. Which divisional games does he traditionally have problems in, is it @Detroit?

Spitfire
10-02-2007, 09:25 AM
So far he's only thrown 2 picks, he usually has more at this point - he did have one on Sunday, but it was taken away on a Vikings penalty. The Pack has had the most problems with the Lions and Vikings when playing them on the road.

Brett Favre needs 2,657 more passing yards to pass Dan Marino and while he seems on pace to get that this season that's going to be a little more difficult once the weather in Green Bay turns cold.

tj

I know that he has the reputation for playing poorly @Minnesota, but all the fantasy football "experts" were quoting really good stats for him @Minnesota for the past 4-5 years.

I'll try to track down the numbers that they were saying.

tj

"Brett Favre, Packers. In his last four games at Minnesota, Favre has averaged 305.3 yards per game, with 10 touchdowns and only two interceptions."

So add in this past week, that makes 300+ yds, 12 TDs, and 2 INT's for his past 5 games @Minnesota. Pretty da*n good!

But for most of Favre's career the team hasn't done well there, though yes, they've won I think three of the last four in Minnesota. Generally, the team has not done well in indoor stadiums though they won a Super Bowl in one.

Packers play in Denver in two weeks on MNF. Don't count on a Denver loss, though the Pack has played well for the most part they can be quite inconsistent.

;) You mean, back when the Raiders were actually good? (j/k!!!)

Maybe I don't root for other AFC West teams because I occasionally run in to a rabid fan of one of the other teams and get to hear him brag/trash talk about his team too much? Lol! A few months ago, some Raiders fan was bragging about the overall record of the Raiders vs the Broncos, but that's mostly on the strength of what the Raiders did a long, long time ago...

On a side note - Denver Post was predicting a major shakeup by Shanahan. Dunno what that means, but obviously what they were doing in the first 5 games isn't working. Plus they're going to lose Travis Henry once his lawsuit gets denied.

Well, before last night, I'd say that the Broncos defensive strength matches up well with the Packers. Everyone's running on the Broncos, and before yesterday, the Packers running game was non-existant. And while it sorta got shut down in the 2nd half, the Packers were running the ball well on the Bears early last night. But until the Broncos sort out their problems, I'll take the Packers even if I were giving 5-6 points.

Now that rivalry has got to be more intense than the Packers and Bears. ;-)
Rivalry games are great! While Red Sox/Yankees has it's thrills, the NFL does such a great job with rivalries since every single game matters so much.

Some of my fondest memories of Broncos football was in the 70s before the expansion of Mile High Stadium. We had season tickets in the South Stands (the ones above the locker rooms and the fans were known not to be too nice to the opposing team when they took the field) and "Half a Loaf Lou" was coach. The Raiders had a mightly team back then, with Ken Stabler and Fred Biletnikoff coached by John Madden.

:) I was in school during those days, and didn't know the game nearly as much, and was certainly before my time as a Broncos fan (probably was rooting for the Rams since it was my big bro's fav team, or maybe the Giants since they were the team on TV every Sunday). But yeah, the Raiders were truly dominant back then, a force to be reckoned with.

Last night, they were talking about how the Packers' stadium/organization is an anomaly/throwback, what, with the benches and all. Made me remember when I'd gotten the chance to sit on the benches in the South Stands for a Broncos game.

LucyDiamond

In the early 70s, our south stand season tickets were in the name of the business where my Dad worked. I don't remember if he quit the business or they gave up those tickets (there were only 2 together and my Dad and I went to the games). Anyway, we didn't have tickets for a few years and the waiting list made them impossible to get. My brother had put his name on the waiting list for 4 tickets and when the stadium was expanded in the mid 70s, we got tickets up in the nose bleed section of the north stands. It wasn't quite the same as the south stands but, we still had loads of fun going to the games. I moved to NJ January of 1985 so, only saw John Elway in his early years. That fall, was his first trip to the superbowl and the Giants slaughtered the Broncos. To this day, I do NOT like the Giants. I was very happy that John and the Broncos won back-to-back superbowls before he retired. After John left, the Broncos have never been the same. Since the Bronco games are rarely broadcast on the East Coast, I rarely see their games anymore and when they are on, I usually just watch the 4th quarter. Over the years, I've lost my intense interest in football but, will always be a Bronco fan.

Last night's game reminded me of last year's Bears/Cards game. Talk about sloppy, but entertaining!

I think you can partially blame it on the Bills coach. Why was he having his rookie QB passing in the redzone when all they needed was a FG? That and not being able to run out the clock.

Looks like I was off on my math, too. He first came into the league when he was 23, not 24. He had a total of 1081 yds, 5 TDs, and 6 INTs in 6 games during his first year. Not much better than what he is currently on track for at the moment. If he keeps it up, then 6 games might be all he gets this year, too.

Well, I didn't cover my spread, but with all of those bum calls against the Pats, it's no wonder. All I can say, in my best Austin Powers voice is:

Yeah BABY!

Did I read a little "yeah baby" in between the lines there?

Sorry...I'm on such a high right now. I could run out in the streets and scream. But since I don't look good in white jackets, I'll just stay in and fetch something to eat.

Congrats to the Pats (and their fans)! Looks like they've got a really good chance at home field advantage.

Next question - do they go undefeated for the season?

so, you're also saying:

yeah baby!!!!!!

okay; I have to admit, I was a bit nervous in the beginning of the game...but I started to think that the Colts were peaking a bit fast. I have to give them credit, though, their defense was spot on. I mean, for what, up to the 3rd quarter, the longest Patriot's play was Brady's run!

Possible, but highly unlikely, especially since once home field is locked up (assuming things play out as they seem to be), it'll be much more important to protect key players from injury going into the playoffs then to attempt to remain undefeated during the regular season.

absolutely, jonathan. In fact, I just read a report by some former pro footballer who said the same thing. If they clinch early, they may as well just bench all the good guys....

uhh...pass interference in the end zone?? nyet. the reception that was challenged and reversed...that everyone seemed to see *except* the official standing yards away. There was one more...a missed one against Indy IIRC.

Though in defeat kudos should still go to the Colts as well. They kept it close, in fact were ahead for much of the game and keeping that offense of the Pats to under 30 points, the only team to do so thus far.

mamboqueen
11-05-2007, 09:14 AM
Absolutely. They made them WORK for that win. And their defense (and offensive line) was stellar until the very end. It definitely could gone either way. But, heh, evil prevailed, I guess ;).

The UPS guy just came by and I asked him if he watched the game. His reply: "yeah, that's why I have no nails left".

I've got two reasons to be happy that the Pat's won ...

1. The SO's son and daughter's bragging about the Colts came to a quick halt.

2. MQ has a sports team to be hopping happy about.

Overall, the game was well worth watching. The defenses played their usual very important roll, keeping the score tight and down, making for an interesting game. Couldn't believe how many penalties New England had, and was it me or did the Colt's offensive line seem fatigued on the last series of plays by their offense :?:

Maybe ... after the bye next week they then face the Bills, Eagles, Ravens, and all these are winable. Then they play the Steelers whihc could be tricky. After that they have the Jets and Dolphins, both playing poorly this season, and finish up against the Giants. It could be possible.

Manning just threw a pick in the Red Zone.

Slight hijack (cacciatore comment made me think of it) - I made some tomato sauce tonight by taking diced tomatoes and putting it thru the blender to make it smoother. Rather strange in that the color isn't as red as what I'm used to, but the flavor is at least, if not more, intense than jarred tomato sauce?

Interesting, maybe I'll give that a try some time. Haven't ever used a blender to make tomato sauce. Usually I just chopp up the tomatoes, and cook then in a frying pan with olive oil, onions, and garlic. After a bit I throw in other herbs, too. My homemade stuff usually isn't as deep red as the store bought stuff either.

Vinatieri blew it for the Colts last night. SD takes the lead in the AFC West, and the Colts only have a one game lead in the AFC South. Career worst 5 INTs for Manning last night.
