I hope its not too early to ask who is going? I am not entirely sure yet but would like to compete in both Amateur and Pro/Am. The former depends on MDP and the latter on cash (how many partners pro is taking).

Also, a while back I wondered if we could have a DF :together: there? If there is interest, we could either organize a dinner out or maybe even a room with drinks & food?? Wouldn't it be neat to meet each other in person?

Along those lines, I don't suppose there are any DFers who live in or near Columbus?

Will prolly be there Saturday, since the schedule is different than last year (for us) and partner wants to get to dance in Battelle Hall (BTDT, so not a big deal for me, though).

I may be attending, a friend of mine has been asked to compete... a major coup for her... so I may swing out to support her. Besides it's OSB... I've wanted to go since before I started dancing myself. :)

Does Jet Blue fly out of a nearby airport, Ithink? They always have great rates from Boston to Columbus. It's actually about the same price R/T than it is one way to NYC from here.

and fyi...farecast.com is a great site for forecasting fares.

No, Jetblue from DC is very expensive right now, around $300. Southwest flights are running about $160 from DC to Columbus now. Not bad I guess...

I think that is the event added for the tv airing of the competition -- where the top couples from each of the four styles go head to head (showdance routines).

Edit: we should get them to add a df challenge. I think we've earned the place on the floor ;)

Ask multiple times and ye shall receive - from the Ohio Star website:

"The 2007 Ohio Star Ball will present the grand finale of the Best of the Best Pro/Am Challenge. The participants in the Best of the Best are the winners of various challenges held at the 2006 Ohio Star Ball, the 2006 Holiday Classic (www .holidaydanceclassic.com) and the 2007 Atlanta Open (www .atlantaopen.com).

The winners in the 9 and 10 Dance Gold Divisions at the 2006 Ohio Star Ball are the first to be eligible to participate. They will later be joined by the winners of the 9 and 10 Dance Bronze and Silver divisions from the Holiday Classic. The Atlanta Open completes the last of the challenges with the winners of the A & B Bronze, Silver and Open Gold Scholarships competing to select their representatives.

Now each winner of the Best of the Best divisions will compete, with a 1 minute and 30 second (1:30 min) solo in their respective style, for the title of 2007 Best of the Best Champions! We hope you will join us when we present the Best of the Best Pro/Am Challenge Grand Finale and will be inspired to participate in these events throughout the 2007 calendar year to compete for the Best of the Best Pro/Am title in 2008!"

Hey there ladies!
Also, in addition to being at USDSC, I will also be at Ohio Star Ball and driving there...so I will be able to bring dresses with me if anyone wants to try anything on from my website!

So...just let me know by PM'ing me!

Also there is a chance that for Ohio Star Ball I may have an extra room at the Drury Inn so if someone wants it, please let me know so I can let you know if it becomes available! The Drury Inn is very easily accessible through the food court, very clean and is my preferred place to stay when at OSB.

Let me know!

I'll be there--have to decide whether to fly Monday night or take a risk on early Tuesday. (Probably Monday--I wouldn't want to do a panicked rush from the airport.) And I'll probably have to leave on Friday morning. Then again, if I have to leave Friday, I've blown an enitre week of work anyway. So why not stay through Saturday...(someone, talk me into it!)

Eh, just stay. :)

I live about 1.5 hours from Columbus, but I have to fly to Omaha on Nov. 13 for work and will miss the whole thing. :(

(And last year, it was during finals week and I was too broke and stressed to take the time to watch dancing . . . seems that going to OSB while living in Ohio was not meant to be)

SkyBus does fly to Columbus - so if anybody lives in one of their other cities, they'd be good to check out (VERY cheap flights!). They have more restrictions on baggage size though, i think.

Just FYI.

I think we are close to a quorum. Maybe this should be a separate thread? I have a big deadline on the 15th sept (and a comp on the 20th) so can not do much till then. But, perhaps with a bit of help from pruthe(?) we could get something aranged. Who knows, maybe Sam would sponsor this for us (if there are no objections here, of course) - he must know about DF and this can only help his cause...

Hey, on my birthday (two weeks from yesterday) I'm debating--my parents will be on their last night in town. But it's my normal lesson day with my Rhythm pro, plus it's Rhythm group class night. I mean, Mom and Dad can always come watch. They've never seen me dance in person....and it WILL only be two months until Ohio.

And in walking distance it appears? It would be my first time there so I really would love to see what all the hype is about and be part of the action!

And its the week of my b-day!:) I guess it could be a gift to myself for myself!

I called and they emailed it to me. Not clear why it's not on the website, but I guess it's that these are "wholesale" prices and some studios mark them up to cover for their pros loss of teaching time, etc. Independent teachers usually don't do that, and amateur dancers are in a different category where that is concerned. Just explain who you are and why you should see them.

Yes. Details are still being worked out, but DF will have its own table in the vending area to use as "home base" and where people can "sign in", leave messages for each other, and arrange to meet up as they wish. Some other ideas are in the work to help promote DF's visibility, but any ideas can be sent to me via PM or, better yet, posted in the staff mailbox forum.

GJB - I don't recall OSB evening tickets ever being sold out (If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me). The space is sooooo huge, they just can't run out of seats.
Day tickets also never got sold out, even though the (other, smaller) room was packed and SRO (for the finals in pro-am champ, e.g.). Still, it's a good idea to send your ticket requests ASAP once you know you're going.

Chel - good thing is that by dancing on Thursday, you only be a 'little' tired for your events . . . can't guess what it'll be like by the end of the weekend! We'll see you there.

So, SD, any updates on DF happenings at Ohio?

So, SD, any updates on DF happenings at Ohio?
I'll try and get you an update shortly GJB.

SDsalsaguy
11-03-2007, 03:31 PM
OK, here's the update:

DF will have two tables in vendors area on 2nd floor, including a live connection to DF (set in kiosk mode, i.e. browsing will be restricted to DF only) throughout the entirety of OSB. Among other things, we hope that (a) DF members in attendance will take advantage of this to post about the various goings on and results throughout the week, and (b) that those unfamiliar with DF will have a chance to find out about us.

There will be a banner of some nature, and we're trying to get a message board of some nature, so, for instance, members could post "members a, b, & c meeting at the bar for drinks at X pm; any other DFers available please join us!"

Booth set up will be starting close to 9am Wednesday. Ideally various members will be able to sign up for short periods to man the table throughout OSB, say 2-3 hours. Anyone willing to help out? If so, please let me know, so that we can start coordinating a schedule to ensure as much table coverage as we can get.

Also, just as an FYI, there will be DF business cards (with a 2008 calendar on the back) available at the table so that prospective members can take those with them whenever they stop by our tables.

Any comments, questions, or suggestions?

I walked down to the Hyatt today at lunch. The skies are sunny this afternoon, with temperatures in the low 60’s. The possibility of rain won’t be here until overnight.

In the lobby, there’s a lot of activity at the desk. While I can’t be sure, at least some of the folks look like they might be here for OSB, especially the women with their hair pinned up already. A sign announces there’s another conference going on, but someone said that it ends today.

There’s nothing to see on the 2nd floor of the Hyatt. The doors to the conference rooms, which will house many of the vendors, are closed. A lot will have to take place in the overnight hours to get everything ready. Where today there are folks sitting around in chairs by the Hyatt restaurant, tomorrow will be mostly likely be the music and video vendor. And now where there is nothing in the corridors, tomorrow will be dress, shoe and music vendors throughout. A few workmen were standing around, but didn't look like they were doing anything yet.

On the 3rd floor, the photographer already has tables set up. Several people were milling around the tables. I could speculate some were already ordering their videos, but I can’t be sure. The registration desk is set up as well, and people were picking up their information. The door to the ballroom was open, and from what I can see it looked like it ready for business. A few folks were chatting about which tables they were going to sit at. And one lady was standing outside the doorway in her orange ballgown, looking like she was waiting for someone.

Hopefully more folks will report on what's going on throughout the week.

I would just like to say that all this talk about OSB has made me feel very nostalgic. I haven't danced in almost 7 years, but Ohio Star Ball holds very fond memories for me.

It was my first comp as a freshman in college and I competed there for 5 consecutive years. It was the first time I had the chance to see professional ballroom dance in front of my eyes and I was hooked.

I am feeling very envious of everyone there and I am excited to get back into the ballroom world so that I can possibly be there with y'all next year.

So much luck to all of you!! If any of you pop into the collegiate ballroom, give a yell to the Rutgers team for me!

Well, I haven't packed even a sock, I haven't applied a drop of tanner, my costume is missing a few rhinestones and I'm leaving tomorrow morning. But hey, I'll pull it together somehow :) Sooooo excited! I have lots to do tonight after work, obviously, but I could not be more excited about this little vacation. At this point I don't even care how I place, we've had almost no time to practice and prepare so just getting the experience and having the privilege to watch the professionals is what I'm looking forward to the most.

I have no idea how crazy it's going to be, so I don't know if I'll get to meet any DFers, but if you see anybody that looks like the pictures in my photo album PLEASE come tap me on the shoulder! woah - the computer here doesn't seem to be registering my responses... at least with firefox. I just opened Safari... At least this seems to be working.

Is anyone around today/ night (thursday). I just finished my events and am ready to be a social bunny - or some more masculine creature. :)

Actually, you just sent three messages - seems very crowded there :)
I have not noticed an official notice of a get together - anyone else read one here?

BM

No word since I started reading. Cantski, how long will you be at OSB? Is Larinda still there?

Flying out tonight . . . I've packed everything except my costume, shoes, and work for the down time. I should probably do something about that . . .

This is a bit exciting/nerve-wracking: I have never traveled further than 150 miles for a comp, and this is only my second time competing outside of the collegiate circuit.

Is it sad that, aside from having to combine Paso with Cha Cha and Rumba (uber-drat), my absolute greatest concern is how I'm going to get my hair done? I have never been able to get my hair into a bun that a) I liked and b) stayed in place.

No. Water's wet, the sun shines, and women obsess about their hair:D. I'm sure there will be some one there you can pay to do your hair in a bun so tight it will be bullet-proof.

If it helps any, I don't obsess about my hair in "real life." :D However, after hearing enough local coaches talk to me about how crucial the overall "look" of a dancer is (and I agree 100% - why spend $700 on a gorgeous dress and then spend only five minutes on hair and makeup?), I definitely don't wan't to become an example on the list of things NOT to do for competition.

Maybe a good way to get together would be to put a sign on the (non-virtual) message board announcing a convenient time each day (like the end of the afternoon session) when anyone who's free could meet up at the booth, at least to say hi, and to arrange further social events as schedules allow.

Yes, but, now you can't bring it back on the plane. I think I'm all set on hairspray. Somehow, though, my 6+ bottles of hair gel have walked off. I now only have most of a sample-size Garnier gel product . . .

Is someone going to be watching amateur latin tomorrow? Would love to hear results from as many divisions as possible, but at least amateur adult and under 21!

Last year on amateur latin day, I watched from 9 AM until the end of the afternoon in a truly gluttonous feast of spectating. This year, my spouse has a business meeting in Chicago, so I will be home, taking my child to primary school and teaching college composition. I thought about the possibility of both of my daughter and I ditching school and going to Ohio, but earlier in the week she had an ear infection and I didn't feel like that would be fair to her at all. (She's feeling much better now, though, and she has suddenly started showing quite a bit of interest, so I kind of wish I had gone for it. Oh well.)

So my greatest excitement will be your OSB and the pumpkin chocolate chip muffins we are bringing in for snack. Don't leave me hanging; you don't want me to start binge-ing on muffins, do you? ;) (J/k!)

Best to everyone who has yet to dance, and I *hope* I'll see a lot of you at MAC! (That one is a definite for us!)

Amateur Latin:

1. Val and Val
2. Kamil and Katya (Canada)
3. ?? and ?? (Canada)
4. Anton and Carolina (Canada)
5. Pasha and Inna
6. Jean-Phillipe Milot and Partner (Canada)

So as you can see Canada had a strong turnout. There were a couple US couples that didn't even make the Semi, one of which I would of put in the final.

Wow, those are interesting results. I would have thought Alex/Sharen might have been in there, or Stas/Elijah, or Pasha/Sasha.

Just went back to look at 2006:
1-Val/Val
2-Grigori/Lilit
3-Nik/Natasha
4-Boris/Nicole
5-Kamil/Katya
6-Stas/Anna
SF-Alex/Elijah, Russ/Katusha, Maxim/Alina, Jean-Phillipe/Laurence, Francis/Claudia (now pro), Pasha/Inna. (Not in that order.)
(Earlier that day, Anton/Karolina won U21, but then Pasha/Sasha beat them in J6 later that afternoon, after placing 4th in U21).

Interesting to see how things played out this time. Hope any couples who are disappointed with missing that final will bounce back better than ever by MAC. :)

Crazy! I've only seen Stas/Elijah dance once--at nationals--and I was surprised that they didn't make the finals then, too. They aren't the showiest couple, and I know they haven't been together all that long, but I liked what I saw! But then I've always enjoyed Elijah's dancing.

It look's like we (the DFers in attendance) have been a little quiet !

Fri. night was great:

- Tony and Elena officially retired. John Depalma read nicely written letters; one each from Tony and Elena. The danced one final show number and received a huge appreciative response from the audience.

- Pro Standard was a tough competition and all enjoyed the Pro debut/victory of Arunas and Katusha. Despite the absence of Victor and Anna and Erminio and Liene to attend the World Standard Championships, it was still a tough competition:

1- Arunas and Katusha
2- Linas and Ieva
3- Mikhail and Anastasia
4- Igor and Julia
5- Blaz and Inna
6- Urs and Agnes

Arunas and Katusha also won the Standard Showdance. Mikhail and Anastasia performed a unique and fun "Shrek" routine with Mikhail wearing a HUGE Shrek mask.

- Pro Rhythm was also a great turnout. I very much enjoyed Jose and Joanna and Felipe and Carolina. Carolina looked beautiful.

1- Jose and Joanna
2- Felipe and Carolina
3- Emmanuel and Julia
4- Evgeny and Inna
5- Michael and Danielle
6- Decho and Bree

Jose and Joanna also won the Rhythm Showdance.

-Shows, shows, and more shows! OSB will be broadcast in five one hour episodes beginning in late Jan. So, they are taping five episodes worth of show numbers over Fri. and Sat. evening. Many/most of the numbers were performed by Pro/Am and youth competitors. A couple of the kids were consummate performers. We will have a great program to look forward to when "Championship Ballroom Dancing" airs.

Hmmm...no reports on the Pro-am front? Well, I guess I'll start us off then since I did the pro-am latin A event. Very well contested on all pro-am latin events. A few new faces who shook up the placings a bit. The quality of dancing has definitely improved significantly especially in the A event. It was a very tough final, and even tougher breaking into the final. Not sure if other DFers were there. Pro-am latin B was exciting and I think overall I agreed with the placings. Pro-am Latin C winners were clear winners in my book. As for Latin A, I don;t really know since I was dancing although I would have personally placed the 2nd placed couple first. I was hoping to do better but oh well, a good learning experience nonetheless.

Good luck to all who are still waiting to compete!
