"FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR.

Appeals to: Viewers who root for clunky musclemen to win dainty twinkle-toes contests. "

My pick for a frontrunner would have to be Helio Castroneves and Julianne Hough -- a young athlete paired with the reigning champion who just coached another young athlete to victory. I would also pick Floyd Mayweather Jr., who is another young athlete. But this article (http://www.boxingscene.com/index.php?m=show&id=10093) suggests that he's struggling with the dancing, as he thought about quitting it.

Please, lord, let them be right and let Jane Seymour not be a total loss, because if the spoilers elsewhere about partners are correct then that means Tony will get to stick around longer.

I don't know as this season has any real "ringers" there are performers that don't dance...and athletes that don't perform...
As always I'm a Tony fan... and I'm excited about Jane... I've been a fan of hers since she was a bond girl... (Well I'm not old enough to have seen it first round, but I grew up on the orig 007) :P

I feel nothing but pity for the poor stupid man who wrote that column. "Old people dancing?" He simply has no idea.

I'll take my "old people dancing" to my "elevator music" over any other type of dance or music anyday.....but hey, to each their own.

Any column in which the author refers to Victoria Beckham as "Skeletor" is written tongue-in-cheek.

And the "old people dancing" was made under his comments about Sabrina Bryan, who's fanbase is primarily 12- to 16-year-olds. In the opinion of most 12- to 16-year-olds (not all, of course) ballroom dancing is "old people dancing."

At age 13, the only exposure I had to ballroom dancing was in the afterschool social dance class the administrators strongly suggested we take before the 8th grade graduation dance. I spent the entire class trying to keep my partner from running away from me while we tried to waltz to "Open Arms" by Journey. And at the dance itself, the only dancing I did was the Running Man to something by Technotronic.

Had I known you could waltz to Open Arms, I am sure I would have started my dancing days much sooner! *LOL* Although at the time it came out, I probably found my new set of wheels far more interesting.

You going to have your site up for the first episode, K?

I dont know...years ago I would have assumed so, but these days (after reading sites like TMZ and dlisted, etc) it seems like everyone is saying things like that on purpose just to be dramatic/mean/ugly/etc. And I've heard one too many djs and tv show hosts laugh about the popularity of a dumb dancing show[their words, not mine] to think that deep down he really likes the show or dancing or doesnt think its old, etc. Maybe its just me and I'm cynical or something, but openly scoffing at stuff /being rude seems to be the trend these days via blogs and columns so I tend to take things the way they are written/said...

I smell a scandal. Sabrina Bryan also put out a fitness-dance DVD (http://www.amazon.com/Sabrina-Bryan-Byou-Dance-Workout/dp/B000BYA4F6) in 2005 and is working on a follow up to it. This has to be worse than the Mario Lopez-Kids Incorporated flap, right? Especially since she's currently on a Disney Channel show?

I'm curious as to how many of the contestants don't have a preexisting connection with ABC. Cameron Mathison is on an ABC soap. Mark Cuban owns an NBA team, and ABC has NBA broadcast rights. Jane Seymour's appeared on an episode of "How I Married Your Mother." ABC owns ESPN, so Helio Castroneves and Floyd Mayweather are covered there.

Am I missing anything about the other contenders?

We already know it's more of a popularity contest than a serious dance contest. And, as far as the contestants go, most of them are in it for the publicity. So, what difference does it really make if some of them have danced before. I am looking forward to this season even more so because some of the contestants have a dance background ! Can't wait to see Sabrina and Mel dance. Not sure if it's accurate or not but I read somewhere that Jane Seymour has done ballet. So, I am looking forward to seeing her too.

As far as affiliations with ABC go, maybe it's easier for the network to recruit contestants that they have ties with.

According to this interview, Helio Castroneves was asked by Apolo to join the show:

I have no problem with people having dance experience, as long as they are upfront about it, which Mario Lopez wasn't: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRUVu5GcOfw

I'm glad for Sabrina. With men winning the last 3, they gotta level the playing field a little...

Bingo. Why would ABC want to give another network's stars any kind of publicity? The way that DwtS operates, they don't even want to acknowledge another network's existence. Unlike SYTYCD, where you'll see Louis van Amstel sitting in the audience and cheering on his student, Dmitry Chaplin, last season, or Nigel's infrequent references to DwtS last year and this year. So it definitely makes sense that they'd pick people from within their own network or affiliates (Disney being the parent company and all).

MOiB, How I Met Your Mother is produced by 20th Century Fox and aired on CBS.

Regarding the scandal (seems like we have one every season), I'm sure that means we should expect more blatant plugging from Bruno when he's judging. I'm still shaking my head at the Little Mermaid comment he made the last time around about a contestant's performance when the DVD had just gotten released.

Cameron Mathison has a HUGE female soap-watcher following. Way more than Kelly Monaco could ever hope to have... I always thought that her soap-fame based win theories were overestimated; I think she won more b/c of the underdog/hard worker phenomenon audiences love to root for. Yes, she had a built-in fan base but she is NOT a popular character on the show; Cameron has her beat in that department by leaps and bounds. If he looks any half-way decent in the first show, I wouldn't bet money against him.

Thanks for the correction, Beto. And the Little Mermaid comment was pretty hard to take -- although he could've said something even worse like, "You look just like Cinderella III: A Twist In Time."

Just you wait. The season is still young and I'm sure Bruno will find a way to say that or something as egregiously bad. :D

Thanks Beto and MOIB - I laughed when I read that article !

Don't recognize some names (guess that's part of being D-listers . . .)

but Mark Cuban - wow - a self-made bbbbbillionairre! He doesn't have to do it. He may want to do it - and more power to him for doing so! I read somewhere that he had disco dancing in his background, so maybe he's not too worried.

Helio - more tongue in cheek comments . . . not just a few times - he has (or tied) the best 3 race streak (1st, 1st, 2nd) in Indy history:notworth:

Floyd - very impressive to win 38 and lose . . . 0:notworth:

The network is clearly working their agenda, but as long as they bring us some interesting people like these, I don't mind.
