OK, happened to overhear conversation pro (not mine) at our studio was having with another student. He was scheduling her for a coaching, and mentioned that he likes to schedule another lesson immediately afterwards (ie coaching from 2:30-3:15, lesson with pro from 3:15-4pm), so that they can go over what coach was teaching. Obviously, pro is at the coaching with the student anyway, so they're both getting this teaching from coach at same time. This struck me as a really good idea, but would like to get some input from others.
I haven't had a coaching in months (finances), and don't remember if m pro suggested doing the same thing at coachings I've had. I'm moving out of the country for a year and likely will take a break from dancing, so it's more just out of curiosity that I ask this, but would still like input on the idea.

I like to, although it depends on how many coachings I'm taking at once because it certainly depletes the bank account. I guess my reasoning is so that both my pro and I are on the same page on what we just went over and can try to reinforce it a bit before next lesson.

I've not had coaching sessions with my pro but, if I did, I think it would be a good idea to have a lesson immediately afterwards, or at least the next day.

Yes, same day generally not feasible due to logistics, but within a few days as possible.

Yes, I always schedule a lesson after the coaching session. This way we flesh out our notes while the session is still fresh, and walk through the choreography (if any) to be sure we understand it. Too many times we've thought our notes were fine and the following week try to do the routine only to find out that we're missing a step or something. We always figure it out eventually, but that's money ticking away.

As long as your brain isn't full after the coaching and therefore not able to get too much out of the lesson afterwards (which is often be the case for me), it's a great idea. :)

I don't like it. I need some time to absorb what I've learned before I have another lesson on it.

I like to do 45 minutes (one lesson) with the visiting coach, and then immediately thereafter do another 45 minutes with my Pro/Am teacher. This way what the coach tells us gets integrated into what we've been working on before either of us can forget any nuances.
It helps that the visiting coach is one of his coaches, too -- keeps it all in the same educational family, so to speak.

I know this wasn't asked by the OP but, ideally, the visiting coach and pro would allow the session to be video taped.

Yeah, we try to do video tapes, and always do video tape if it's a coaching involving choreography.
i also agree with laura on advantages to coach also coaching pro. Our regular coach falls into that category, though we also have other outside coaches occasionally (hopefully more by time I get back into town, i've been pushing both the managers to bring more coaches in, and trying ot push students to see advantages of coachings, as of course we can't bring outside people in if managers can't sell the coaching spots).

heh...at my last coaching session, I got new choreography and had to tape my pro with the visiting pro do it. Well, I had never used their camera before and had no idea where the zoom in/out button was, so part of it has only their upper halves dancing. Helps a lot in remembering the choreography!

hahah mq, sounds like something that would happen to me. :/
Was just watching dvd of parent's new chacha choreography when I was over there. I love my parents to death, but they're never going to be able to make that chacha look like the video. Course, number of titles between choreographer and the teacher add up to just a bit of expertise in dancing, compared to bronze syllabus students. :)

 mq, I bet that tape was really useful...
I like having videos of new choreography on my iPod so I can view it anywhere I'm at.

I have to figure out how to do that (I have a Zen...might be a bit different). I'm sure it would be very helpful!

IMO, I think is a great idea to tape the coaching that way I will have something to go back in the future. I my case we will have a routine for a showcase or competition choreograph. also I think it will be a great idea to video some of the lessons with the pro so you can see yourself dancing and see what other see while you are dancing. BTW this has helped me with collapsing smooth frame.

Heh, only video I have right now is of march competition. My dancing is so far beyond that now that it's painful for me to watch. Realy should dig it out again sometime and take full notes to make sure I really have dealt with as much of the problems as I can at this point.

Yes - I always try to do a session with my pro immediately after a coaching. Between the two of us, we can remember all of the key points made by the coach, and the pro gets to add her emphasis on what SHE feels is important (and sometimes adds her own twist or opinion). AND the immediate extra repetition helps to nail the coaching in my memory - sometimes the memory in my head, sometimes the memory in my body ("oh, THAT'S how it's supposed to feel!").
Re videos - yes, I ALWAYS get new or changed choreography on video; I usually try to get the video twice - once for timing with counts, and then again to music (sometimes to slowed-down music for clarity). Periodically, we will video a round of all of my routines (opens and solos, with current changes) - to get a current "benchmark" of all routines, as video feedback ("ok, I fixed this; oops, I still need to fix that"), and as a safety-net / learning-tool in case another pro has to quickly learn my routines (like those comps where I only have 1 pro not 2, or my partner gets sick, or I need an extra partner for a showcase).
