View Full Version : Salsa" threesomes"
What do you guys think about salsa “threesomes”- one leader dancing with two followers?
Usually salsa is a unique experience shared between two partners. Can it be three partners?
Does anybody have any experience with it :?: :?: :?:

SD is the one who has done it and he has photos in the df gallery to prove it!! :)
I've done threesomes for merengue...my salsa skill is definitely not up to that level yet.

It's probably more common in the casino style than the New York / LA style.
I've done it, it's actually a ton of fun as long as it is playful. With ruedas, you get more than one partner, and the salsaville series actually has half of the rueda video dedicated to this. The combinations get a bit crazy, and the dips are more fun. When you are dancing amongst friends, sometimes it's fun to just do a pattern over them, or switch partners halfway through a song. But this is just a novelty act more than anything.

I have a real good friend that is the BOMB at doing this! I love just watching him manipulate both followers. They seem to love it.

A really cool routine I saw by Juan Calderon and Cultural Explosion had the guys as siamese twins. So one hand would lead one part of the move, and then the other hand will finish off the move. That must be so much harder to do than the typical one guy + 2 girls...

I did it in merengue but I'm really not good enough to even think about trying it in salsa... But my dance teacher does it and it's simply great.... Really enjoy watching him do it...

followers love the 'threesomes' if the guy knows what he's doing more or less... and they're fun to look at... I saw my dance teacher do a threesome with 2 other guys! it was mad fun!

I sometimes dance threesomes with my instructor or another guy who likes leading 2 girls at one time at parties, if & when it isn't too crowded on the dance floor. Lots of fun!

It is great fun!!! My husband is real good at it, usually we do threesomes but every now and then he dances with 3 or 4 women at a time. I find 4 almost too many because we women dance by ourselves most of the time. But of course he is having a blast!
In the "good old salsa days" here in Germany (about 10 years ago) when there was much less salsa but more excellent dancers, we sometimes did a threesome with 2 guys and I. That of course was absolutely great!!! I had two excellent Puertorican salseros just for myself and they were really good at it, just reaching me back and forth and turning me and and and ...
:bouncy: :bouncy: :bouncy: And me having a ball!!!!

I too wish I were good enough for a salsa threesome, but I've only managed to perfect merengue threesomes. You definitely have to dance with people that realize it's a threesome and won't get upset when it comes time for them to dance by themselves...it's not a competition, can't we all just get along!

Anyone tried two guys & one girl  ...?
It's a Cuban thing I think. Two guys side by side, acting as one guy, using the left arm & leg from one and the right arm & leg of the other, dancing with the girl with normal patterns.
I've been THAT girl 8) ! Let me tell you, it's very interesting, if pretty confusing :P ........for example, which one do you make eye contact with :? .......?

Well, I am perfecting my three-way cha-cha, and I think I have a personal preferred "routine" down.
But this weekend, my former dance partner and another friend wanted to challenge me with three-person rumba. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do in that situation.
I still want three-person tango. :) Or at least humor me with a three-person grinder sandwich, with me as the sandwiched person between two nice soft pieces of... okay, I need to stop writing now. ;)

I know what you mean, Youngsta. Like Rueda, it's great to watch and fun to do but doesn't really feel like partner dancing -- the sense of connection just isn't there.

I would agree with both of you it is just "fun", and does not have the passion of salsa. Sometimes you just want to do something different. :) It's like comparing meat and vegetables. Two very different things.

I don't know!! :? Probably because a lot of merengues get played, I'm talking with two ladies and don't want to leave one out? (What a gentleman, am I. :) ) If it is a good night with a good dance mix I'm usually want the one-to-one partnership dynamic. Plus, I'll admit I cannot do much with two compared to dancing with one lady. When it is a bad music night I start wanting to fool around.

ok this is one thing that im kinda iffy on...3somes can be fun but only if they are done with good intentions. in my experience ive had alot of guys do it purely to show off to everyone watching. a big group of beginner girls come in or something and hell go find 2 girls that he knows can follow him and he spends the whole time just looking at the spectators smiling and winking and not paying attention to the girls hes dancing with, that can make for some crashes when the 2 girls cross over (im talking about the 3 somes where you have one girl on each hand doing the same thing not where the man switches back and forth between partners, that is alot of fun!!) the other thing i noticed is that when its a 3some the guy often starts dancing too fast for the music...panic? showing off? im not sure but that makes life harder for the followers. then it starts getting up to more and more spins for the girls which when done on the wrong beat like "oh tht hott girl is looking i better make these girls do a million spins RIGHT NOW" can be dangerous as you havent prepared
dont get me wrong i know that this isnt most guys agenda but my past experiences have really put me off the whole thing. :(

Not mine, SalseraLaura!! Never! I actually have initiated all mine due to signals from the ladies I've been with. Yesterday night another girl friend called out "you are the man", and then I got distracted. I want to give the poeple whom I'm dancing with a good time, not show-of!! And yesterday night I spun one lady at least 20 times...but she likes to spin and wants to spin and spin and spin. I was just giving her what she wants! Honest! :)

ive had fun before dancing 3some it depends on the guy really....and yes i do LOVE to spin and spin and spin but i just find that during the 3some dances with the guys ive danced with that theyre lead isnt as strong as usual so its harder to spin well and the timing is off which makes it even harder, and lastly due to the show off thing that these particular guys do they wont stop spinning you when you start to go off and that just looks sloppy. 3somes are definitely something that can be great fun but i guess in my club circuit the only guys brave enough to try it are the one who are a little too brave if you know what i mean

At the San Francisco congress last year, before the acts started one night, there was a small, middle-aged Latino dancing off to the side off the seats. He started with one or two ladies, surrounded by a half-circle of watchers. As time went by, he added ladies from the watchers, until he had six or eight people dancing with him. Not much fancy stuff, obviously, but it was most amusing to watch; he virtually disappeared for long moments, surrounded by so many women, most of whom were much bigger than he.
In my small experience, dancing with two ladies in Merengue, when their 'free' hands are also linked, can be a real hoot: trying to un-knot each other, after one or another move has been initiated. The most important thing, I think, is that the women know how to handle themselves without too much strong leading; the guy can't be thinking about their balance, etc, with the extra person in tow. The ladies have to be OK with interacting with each other to some extent, too.
So, threesomes are not for novices. ;-)

i totally know what you mean, obviously less than half the attention of 1 on 1 partner dancing can be given during a 2 on 1 dance...usually men only try this with women that they know will be able to follow, watching the other woman is very important so that you dont bump into each other, what i was referring to was the problem of bad often rough leading out of time with the music which causes the women to spin incorrectly and a refusal to stop spinning the woman even if both are falling over because of the show element of this type of dance. it is just that when i dance 2 on 1 with men who have a generally good lead and timing their ego seems to get in the way so it becomes a 3 on 1 the man trying to dance with 2 women and his big head....
this is probably just a problem in the salsa scene that im involved in

It seems that this is common in a number of dances. I first saw it being done in Lindy a several months back in a farewell dance (though the guy still hasn't left the area ... hmm). Then last weekend I was taught it in WCS at the end of a WCS "rueda" (my term; they called it "four-play" with 2 couples and "mass confusion" with more than 2) workshop. And it also exists the "Double Bug" (a form of a Scandanavian Lindy derivative, the Bugg) that is said to have developed in the early 80's when there were far more women dancing than men (http://www.swingcraze.com/ussds/other_swing_dance_styles.html#DoubleBug -- also see Bugg on the same page); there's a class scheduled on it for Sunday (1 Aug) at Camp Hollywood.
I've heard that our Salsa teacher does it too, but I've not seen it yet. Also, as I recall Edie's (SalsaFreak) story, the first time she saw Salsa being danced at one point the man was dancing with both women at the same time.

Eric Turro from Buena Vista had done this with three girls. He had two of them holding onto one hankerchief, then grabbed the middle of it in one hand. The third girl goes on his other hand.
Needless to say the whole thing was nothing short of amazing to watch  .

Multiple opposite dance partners was a way of sharing/including people that were left out at the edge of the dance floor without a partner. It has been done in nighclubs since the 60s. Sometimes a guy would take 3 girls out for the evening. Later on during the evening you would see him dancing with all of them at the same time. Sometimes an unknown girl or two would make a facial signal to jump in the fun to the guy and his smile would indicate "go ahead" and there would be four or five. Other times a guy would join to help out the first guy when there were too many women and you'll see a cross exchange...like rueda.

I'm afraid that what you describe doesn't happen that much anymore.
I'd be in favor of reviving that practice myself. 8) 8) Granted, I need a good group of women that I know would be comfortable with that. I already have two girls who enjoy sandwiching me (as far as cha-cha, swing, rumba or merengue/salsa are concerned anyway).
I forgot to mention one of my favorite dancers... she had the delightful opportunity of dancing with me and another fellow earlier this month. Of course I had enough trouble trying to see if I should follow or lead (for the sake of the other gentleman who could only lead).
Also at the showcase that I attended yesterday, one of the dances was a "formation" with the pro (male) dancing with two am's (both female) in American rumba. Quite interesting... I wouldn't do that myself, but oh well... if there are people willing to share...

lol,
but of course it still happens. Always in NY and in dance socials. It does depend if you go to a stuffy night club. We use to call Casablanca, the one on B'way and 52nd St. the stuffy club, while at the Cheetah everyone dance with anyone. Casablanca's clientele consisted of bussinessmen who promoted themselves by handed out their cards hoping to influence the ladies. While the Cheetah was all about having a great time dancing the night away, learning right their on the dancefloor "the Lions Den." You were never asked could you dance? And if you uttered that you couldn't the men would still drag you to the den and say, "It's the only way to learn." Those were the good ole days.

I guess I echo the feeling that a Salsa-Threesome definitely has its place and time. One thing I've seen from time to time is when the really good dancers start switching partners in and out to the point where even their gender doesn't matter. I've seen some dancers go from guy to girl without missing a beat since they can lead and be lead. It is quite a sight to see, although I have to admit that the homo-phobes have a sh*t fit and get all worked up  even though the Salseros are just having a good time.

I have both watched and participated in salsa threesomes. I find watching much more entertaining than dancing it (this is from a girl's perspective). If it's one guy dancing with two girls the moves must be simple. The girls usually throw in some styling or shines in their basic, but it's very limited. Guys usually find it a challenge and tend to like it much more.
I've also tried dancing with two guys and that was a fun roller coaster! One would dance with me for a few seconds while the other did shines, then the partner I was dancing with passed me over through a spin. I always come back exhausted after it.

My salsa teacher takes up 2 ladies, but only in lessons and purely for practical reasons (not enough leads). It looks like it could be fun, but I think the one on one intimacy is lost in a threesome.

I was happy to join a workshop given by Ismael Otero on "1 man, 2 ladies" last year. It was a lot of fun and I think I should try it in real life sometimes.
If you are a leader and know another man good it can be very funny to recover the lady from him while dancing ... and give him the chance to get her back and so on. The ladies usually enjoy this very much ... :P

I'll have to agree with Sabor, though I have to point out that I'm also greedy, in a very different sense. I want my partner all for myself, not share him with another girl or two! (or three...)

A gentleman doesn't do a threesome and tell.
However, since we have now established that you're not a gentleman because you told us......feel free to give us more details about your experience.
Maybe I'm hatin' because I have not done one... but when I see a guy dancing with 2 girls at the same time, it looks a little too pimp-ish and looks like he's showing off. It just seems a little too "hey, look at me" ... If people watch when I'm dancing with a girl, fine... but I don't like to draw attention to myself that way. I feel a little uncomfortable when I dance with a coveted follow for any period of time, knowing that guys are waiting to dance with her; so I would feel all the more like I'm hogging the girls if I had two of them!

2 beginners. One who doesn't think she can dance. Talking together. A friend introduces me to them. Now I can danec with one while the other watches or I can dance with both. Both had a good time, and much better then if one was watching. :P :)

I dance in a follow-heavy scene (not enough men!), so a man dancing with two girls at the same time (or even three!) is doing girls a favour...
I do agree though that often there is an element of the guy showing off, and the dance tends to be just for fun, in a giggly sort of way -- no room for intimacy, passion or getting into the music.
