Hiya everyone, it's me, Sakura Kitten again... :D
Even though I've not learned Salsa yet (I'm excited to though! I hope my teacher starts me off on it soon!), I've heard a great deal from everyone here at DF about "Salsa Clubs." I've never been to any club of sorts (someday! 8) ), so I was wondering if those of you who've been to Salsa Clubs could tell me a little bit about them: you know, what they're like, maybe some good stories (I'm a fan of all of the stories you all tell!), and if anyone knows of a good salsa club or two in the Indy area, I'd love to know about it, for when I can go to them.
Also, a bit of a stupid question here  :headwall: , but is it only Salsa that's danced at salsa clubs, or are other Latin dances done as well? :? Just trying to make sure. *waves* Thanks everyone!
Sakura Kitten :kitty:

The stupid question is the one that isn't asked.

The type of latin music played should depend on what the night in question is called. If it is a "salsa night", then predominantly salsa should be played, with a little merengue, bachata...If it is a "Latin night", again there should be a lot of salsa, but I would expect to have more merengue, bachata, cha cha...perhaps forro, cumbia...as well.

The there is variability depending on dj, with djs even developing cult followings with people going to club nights when tehir dj plays. Then theer are nights when you have live bands... :)

in all the 'salsa clubs' I've been in as opposed to events, and this here in the U.s. and Argentina, the music played is mostly salsa but also Merengue, bachata and little bit of bomba thrown in now and then.

Hope that helps,
Patrick

The salsa clubs I've been to here in NY City and Puerto Rico are just that. Salsa clubs. Nothing aside from a few cha cha chas are played. It is safe to say that if you go to a salsa club in NY City or PR 98% of the time they will play salsa. The 2% will be cha cha cha...

Salsa clubs are way fun. The crowd will all be dancers, so the meet market scene is pretty much not there. Ladies usually go alone, but since the salsa scene is pretty small in relation to NY City residents everyone knows each other, so you are really not going alone even if you enter the club alone.

The scene is rough to beginners. Usually people are out to have a good time themselves so a lot of times the advance dancers want to get a fix and dancing with a beginner doesn't provide it. Never-the-less, there are always dancers willing to dance with just about everyone. It will be intimidating at first when you see advance dancers doing their thing. But hey, keep in mind we all started crawling. :D

Bomba is a Puerto Rican "folk" dance. It was created in the town of Mayaguez on the west side of the island by African Slaves. It is percussion driven and rather hot. Early El Gran Combo albums are mostly bomba. But if you want great examples, cortijo was the major player of Bomba in Puerto Rico in the 50s. El Grambo Combo was actually created from members of the cortijo band after it "dis-banded". I believe Cortijo was the first to record a bomba in 1951 as well. Before that, Bomba wasn't allowed to be recorded...
