I thought Jenny's Cha Cha (7-7-7) was very good esp. considering it's the first week. The judges seem a little bit tough considering it's only the first week.

Based on the women who have danced so far, it looks like the bar has been raised again. They are doing really well for the first week.

I worked on Mackinac Island. Besides the horrifically depressing ending, it's not a bad movie, but the romance of the shooting location kinda wears off when you've actually had to spend any time there, especially surrounded by movie memorabilia and fans who STILL come to see the Grand. (Those of us who work there have been known to call it "Macaktraz".) I kind of twitch whenever I hear Rachmaninoff's 18th var. on a theme of Paganini thanks to that film.

I've danced in the hotel where they shot the film, though. It was kind of nice, but a teeny floor--just social stuff. Her picture is indeed still hanging up somewhere downstairs. (And she still looks just about as great. What deal with the devil has she made?!?) I think Tony might have struck it lucky this season *crosses fingers and toes*

YOu know what I've been thinking. If I can get my mind around to dancing like these ballroom folks no-one in Goa would have any connuptions seeing me dance.

hmmmm...

On second thought. I've already done that at my cousin's wedding last month.

Jane did great! And I was pleasantly surprised by Sabrina. I really think that was the FIRST cha that I've seen on this show that didn't look like me doing cha. It's usually very sludgy like mine, but she was very sharp and rhythmical!
My prediction, the supermodel is gone. Poor Alec. All she's got is pretty, and women are NOT going to vote for a swimsuit model, unless it's the boy swimsuit model!

The pros did us proud
Drew is 100% better than his predecessor
Dancing was at least as good as before - if not better
The focus was more on the dancers and less on the judges

I also liked that the judges' scores seemed to match with what they were saying. It wasn't, "You were the worst out here tonight, so I give you a 9!" Great got 8s, good got 7s, could be better got 5s and 6s. Amazing got a 9. (I really thought they were going to give Sabrina a 10 though. And quite honestly, I think it matched or surpassed some previous seasons' triple 10 performances.) But it does seem to be a little more consistent across the board.
It did slay me when Len started getting onto Alec about too much closed hold in the foxtrot. Since when does Len want the dancers doing open work anyway?

I think it's because he knew Alec had to a lot of the heavy lifting (ha!) to cover up Josie's poor form and technique. Poor Alec. Hope he survives to at least week 2. They need to stop pairing him with supermodels. Bad karma.

He had one of the better lines of the night: "Josie is deceptively unfit - her body is like jello" :D

I really didn't like any of the cha cha performances. Sabrina's dance was more hip-hop, less cha cha. I wasn't surprised when Carrie Ann and Bruno fawned all over it. But Latin is more exciting than Smooth.
Of the foxtrots, I liked Jane and Tony best, Marie and Jonathan next, and Alec and Josie least. Alec was able to support Josie through the routine. I thought Jane looked very natural and at ease on the floor.
The ladies came out in general at a higher level than other seasons. Let's see how the men do tonight.

RickRS

I thought it was a impressive start for this season. The dancing seemed a few notches higher than previous years at the first week.

Sabrina Bryon set the place on fire with her number. Since she use some hip-hop in it, I was expecting Len to knock points off. Surprising thing, Sabrina didn't need the hip-hop at all! Her cha-cha seem quite good all by itself. I think Len was giving her a break because it was opening night and a impressive effort, but I expect he will get nasty if she (and others) go for flash over form in up-coming weeks.

Josie Maran was the weakest of the women, so it remains to see if there is someone in the men's rack that is even weaker.

What ever happen to Tori Spelling? I heard she was supposed to been on this year's show.

but they had to die miserably to do it(didnt he starve himself to death?!)...i wanted them together while living! lol! i have another movie that is similar, done in the 70s i think....i think its called "the two worlds of jennie logan" or something like that. anyone every seen it? the main women are played by lindsey wagner and linda grey. she buys this old house and finds this old dress in the attic and when she puts it on she is taken back to another time period. its along the same lines but in the end she dies in her present life(where she was unhappy because her husband had cheated on her) to stay in her past life(with a great dude who thought she was an angel) and her present love interest(cheating hubby) finds these pictures her past love interest(great guy) had painted that showed her and the children she'd had and how happy she was, so he knew she had lived and done what she wanted to do, etc. now THAT was a good ending!

oops....unhijack! can't wait to see the men dance tonight!

It took a few weeks for him to come up with "Crazy bear", so give him time.

re: Josie, it's not actually all that surprising. I've read that a lot of models are actually terribly unfit--they're THIN, but they have no muscle tone. It's basically skin and fat over bone. Which makes sense, muscle builds bulk, plus you need to eat to be in shape. A dietician in one article actually used the word "jell-o" to describe what it's like to poke them in the arm--all mush, no muscle. Poor Alec.

Loved the opening pro number. I am so glad Derek and Mark are on the show, they ramp up the action bigtime!I think the other pros, who are what? maybe 10 years older? are going to have to work hard to keep up. Already Max looks more fit than last year.

I really liked the show last night! Sabrina was the best cha cha of the night and I enjoyed the little bit of hip-hop in the routine. Mark is lucky to have her as a partner and I feel they are a good fit. The only 2 woment I've heard of are Marie and Jane. They didn't dissapoint me at all and I LOVED their foxtrots. They were both elegant and portrayed the dance beautifully. I'd give Jane a slight edge over Marie and place her number 1 among the women doing foxtrot with Marie a close 2nd. I felt Josie was the weakest female and feel sorry for Alec to have another weak dancer. Hopefully, he's not eliminated first again.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the men do tonight. The women really set the bar high and if the men do as well, this is going to be the best season yet. The only 2 men I've heard of are Wayne Newton and Cameron Mathison so, I'm especially interested to see how they perform.

I'm really looking forward to getting to know the dancers this year and see them improve and progress. So far, it seems to me that there aren't any prima donnas this season which will make for a very enjoyable season.

Really enjoyed the first night. Sabrina's cha was awesome...the best combination of speed, precision, and performance that I have ever seen on the show and this is only the first week. It will be interesting if she is able to do as well in the ballroom genres. Jane Seymor was also very nice. Quite poised and elegant...so much so that I didn't even notice what the judges were talking about with her turns. I thought that performance was a notch higher than Mel's and was disappointed when the two were given the same score.

Sabrina's and Jane's performances definitely help ease the transition for me between SYTYCD and DWTS.

Excited to see how the men with bring it tonight. I think it will be interesting how Cheryl Burke and Wayne Newton do. They seem like the most mismatched pair personality-wise. I would have put Cheryl with Mark Cuban and Kym Johnson with Wayne.

Alec needs to talk to the casting folks and get out of this supermodel rut. It seems that of all the "types" of stars that they cast on the show, the supermodel is always destined for an early exit. I can't imagine a scenario that keeps Josie around for another week. Even if one of the guys is worse that she was, it seems that no one will be able to match her deadly combination of difficulty dancing, relative anonymity, and misalignment with the voting audience demographic.

wooh
09-25-2007, 01:55 PM
I think Josie's only chance is if Mark Cuban says something that really irritates people. (Which he could easily do.) Who will the voters like less? A woman that's on the show because she's prettier than them (supermodel) or a guy that's on the show because he's richer than them (Mark Cuban)?

The only thing that may work against Sabrina is her apparent tendency to pull a Mario Lopez by doing non-ballroom moves. If she had stuck to standard cha cha cha, she would've gotten 10s already.

Interesting and perhaps a possible scenario...I wonder if the fact that Mark is very well liked in Dallas and the surrounding areas will help him noticeably. I think that Mark also has an advantage because of Kym's teaching style. Kym tends to be lighthearted and relatively carefree in her teaching which tends to frame people in better lights when it comes to the practice montage. Alec definitely did not help Josie out with his 'deceptively unfit' comment (although it was true and hilarious).

Also I think there is a danger in her peaking too early or being saddled with the front-runner or ringer title. People like to see people improve and if she just kills it every week that may actually work against her.

That's true, peaking too early could work against her. However, no one will call her a ringer as her dance background is something she admits to and talks about casually. Whereas Mario would just get silent when asked about his prior dance background and that, appropriately, earned him the "ringer" title.

It was a "TV" movie - would like to see it.... http://imdb.com/title/tt0078430/

I liked the show and esp Jane - as for Marie - she was disapointing - She really needs to step it up if she wants to stay - Interesting to see the model admit its much more work than she thought... I started Ballroom in 88 and took lessons for several years - I have been a firefighter for 34+ years and walking out on the dance floor at comp scared the hell out of me - give me a buring house anytime,lol.... don't dance as much anymore but still love it.... only dancing the wife and I do any longer is swing... did anyone watch "So, you think you can dance" Was surprised to see Buddy Swimmer there and his daughter.... OK - I live in a shoe box - lol

Tonight will be interesting.. About the only guy I know is Wayne - as much as I like him as a singer - I don't see him lasting long on this show...

I really liked Sabrina's cha cha and I loved Jane's foxtrott, she is so elegant and light on her feet, it was just beautiful to watch. And I loved her dress! Marie made up a lot with her smile and playing to the audience and I liked her foxtrott, too.

Josie's foxtrott was the weakest dance of the night, however, her dress was the best! I absolutely loved that dress and she looked stunning in it.

Can't wait to see Helio dance tonight. His looks are "too hot to be true"!
I hope he will live up to my expectations of hot latino dancer, hehe!

Marie is the only star on the show that I know (as the sister of Donny Osmond of whom I was a fan as a teenager). I heard the names Jane Seymour and Floyd Mayweather before but had never seen them on screen.

My Ox Is Broken

I hope now that Jane has shown that you can be over 50 and still be a kick-butt dancer that ABC will do more to find older contestants with a legitimate chance to win. Marie did a fine job, but when asked if she thought she could win, she didn't say yes -- she just said she wouldn't give up. That's fine for her, but I want to see dancers who think they can win.

I'd love to see ABC go after some female ex-athletes. How about Chris Evert or Martina Navratilova?

I just used up all my votes for Jane and Tony. I think I've finally forgiven her for "Somewhere In Time." (Don't get me started on that movie.)
We liked it. When our ballroom instructor told the class that Jane Seymour was one of the stars, some of the students (vast majority in their 40's, 50's, and 60's, with the 40's being a very small group) didn't know who she was until somebody mentioned "Somewhere in Time", which they all remembered.

At least everybody's forgotten that she was in the pilot for the original "Battlestar Galactica".

DOH!

-----------------

Taped it and will tape it tonight and Wednesday, but won't be able to see it until this weekend. Isn't it ironic when dancing gets in the way of dancing?

Re: Sabrina

I think cha cha played to her strengths. It will be interesting to see how she does with the smooth/standard dances.

Very true.

Here are some things that I noticed about her dancing that I don't think I've ever seen a "star" on Dancing with the Stars ever do:

1. Display the strength and speed of an seasoned dancesport competitor

2. Head styling in her spins

3. Display an understanding of different dynamic qualities so much so that it could actually be read on television...there was a syncopated New Yorker section in her routine and after she did a quick one, she did a slow one with a significantly different dynamic quality (it was for lack of a better word, gooey ).

These are all strengths that can be applied to both ballroom and latin dancing.

I think her only down fall could be that she may be less interested in the ballroom genre and therefore engage less in the learning process. But with all her comments about how competitive she is, I doubt that will happen.

I think Mark did a pretty fantastic job of training her to her talent level and not holding anything back.

For the amount of time that they have been training she displayed a very mature understanding of certain dance concepts.

wooh
09-25-2007, 06:22 PM
Not ALL of us have forgotten her from Battlestar Galactica! Poor Boxie and Apollo!! (Yep, I'm a nerd.) I felt so young when they said she was a Bond Girl, because I remember her most as Dr. Quinn. Not a clue about Somewhere In Time!:)

Maybe Mark Cuban says something that irritates people or maybe he dances poorly - in which case he's earned his way off the show.

However, people like Mark - with significant accomplishments, who worked industriously at odd jobs from a young age, and come from humble beginnings, have an allure all their own . . .

I don't really think they did that much hip hop. A couple of 2 bar spots maybe? Considering the song, I thought it was actually a nice little touch. And didn't take away from it being cha. Now if they'd tried to throw a couple bars of hip hop into a waltz... Well that might be pushing it!

I agree - thanks for pointing this out - it was barely in there.

a story line from the filmed comments during the week . . . so the series staff gets time to study the film and provide another story line (if they didn't have it already), and the 'judges' had some drama to talk about. Drama.

That was another great show tonight.
None of the guys was bad, I thought. Wayne Newton is certainly the weakest of the guys but he did OK. This season it seems that we have no underdog for the mercy votes: no Master P., no Jerry Springer and no Billy Joe Cyrus. IMHO probably Josie will go home.

And oooohoooo, go Helio go! Helio was .... absolutely bewitching!!!!! He certainly did NOT disappoint me, on the contrary, he exceeded my expectations. He and Julianne make a great couple. I love all the pros but I think Julianne has become my favorite! I absolutely loved their foxtrott, they both looked gorgeous in their outfits and danced beautifully. I was like Bruno, I could not take my eyes off them and I watched that dance 5 more times after the show.

Explanation please: what was the idea of Alec staring into the camera angrily, not saying a word, as he and Josie were doing their post-score interview. She was on the verge of tears, saying, they say I can't do this, can't do that, seemingly looking for comfort, and he refused to say a word. And that means?

My Ox Is Broken

I'm assuming Alec was just miffed that he'll probably be the first pro cut from the show for the second season in a row. But it would've been nice to see him comfort Josie a bit. It's not her fault he and Paulina got a raw deal last season.

I'm assuming Alec was just miffed that he'll probably be the first pro cut from the show for the second season in a row. But it would've been nice to see him comfort Josie a bit. It's not her fault he and Paulina got a raw deal last season.

Josie was so cute during her post judging interview. It made me want to vote for her...too bad the voting was already over.

I thought Alec's reaction was actually hilarious. I think they may have worked it out before hand because they both started out just staring and the camera. Alec just kept it going the whole time. I was quite entertained.

I agree. I think it was a "bit." I didn't think it worked very well, but . . . meh.

Actually, though I thought Sabrina's chacha amazingly sharp and powerful, I found Mel's cleaner. I think Sabrina had better foot pressure and characterization so it read better, but Mel has a lot of potential, too.

I have to agree with sambagirl, Sabrina was fast, but I thought her legs/feet were flailing around a bit. I actually enjoyed Mel's cha better.

re: Sabrina
I don't really think they did that much hip hop. A couple of 2 bar spots maybe? Considering the song, I thought it was actually a nice little touch. And didn't take away from it being cha. Now if they'd tried to throw a couple bars of hip hop into a waltz... Well that might be pushing it!

I would almost like to see that... :p

Hey everybody. My name is Vivi. I'm from Hungary... I've noticed this show lately and it really got my attention. I can't watch it at the exact time cuz we don't have this channel here in Hungary, but I managed to download the parts of the show. I really liked last week's performances. My favourite was Jane Seymour... She did a great job, but I liked the other ones too. :p:p

Hi Vivi,

Welcome to DF! As you can probably tell, we have quite a group here who loves DWTS. I don't know where you got the clips to download but, if you want to watch the entire episodes, you can go to the DWTS website at http://abc.go.com/primetime/dancingwiththestars/index.html. There's a link on that page to Full Episodes where you can go and view the entire show. ABC usually has the videos posted a day or so after the initial airing.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts on how the dancers do each week.

Hey everybody!
I've forgotten to tell you that I'm 16 and I'm learning English for a few years so please forgive me if I write something wrong.

Larinda,

Do you sou speak Hungarian?

I haven't got the chance to watch the last shows. I've just seen Jane Seymour's mambo. I think it was very good whatever the judges said!
I'll tell you the truth guys... I'm a Jane Seymour fan.:)Though, I like the others too... Sabrina is doing a great job. I've just heard that Jane Seymour's mother has passed away. I'm so sorry for Jane's loss. Do you know something about her future apperances in DWTS? Is she going to continue the dancing competition?

Yes, as reported in another thread here, Jane is intending to continue with the show.
