Good article, spitfire.
This is true here, too. Hip hop is everywhere -- at the gym, at dance studios, on TV, in the movies. Like it or not, there's a cultural shift on the move. I wonder how long it will last? Maybe permanently. Breakdancing and rapping started a long time ago. what? Twenty, twenty-five years? So I don't think it's going anywhere soon. 8)

I would have to agree...hip hop is definately popping everywhere, but it's not JUST hip hip...dance in general is coming back into the market and there is definately an increase in the public eye.
In the past six to eight months, there have been nine or ten dance movies/tv shows released. Then, look at the recent fashions...jazz pants are very "in" and recently I heard legwarmers are making their way back into fashion central.
Dance has become one of the newest "fitness" crazes as well. Local gyms and schools are seeing an increase in dance enrollment and I would venture to bet dance studios' enrollment are increasing as well.
Dance (in any form) in the public eye is great and I can't wait for the next dance revolution to be in full swing!

Are there any dance movies coming out in July-August-September 2004? I'm trying to create some dance publicity around National (US) Ballroom Dance Week, mid-September, and I think some exhibitions around movie premiers would be nice.

Shall We Dance - the remake with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez is scheduled to come out in August.
One Last Dance - starring Patrick Swayze and his wife had limited release in 2003 and may be released later in 2004.
Swing - supposed to have limited release later this month...perhaps they'll have a full release later in the year.
You may want to watch local TV listing for dance related TV shows as well...The Wade Robson Project, Fame, etc.
Stay tuned to the Movies section of my site (http://www.dancersdreamland.com/mtnews.htm) for the latest movie news. Dance Spirit magazine (sister to Dance Teacher) also usually does reviews on upcoming dance movies.
If I remember, I'm email/post message to you with the latest movie news.

You may also want to watch for movies released to video around that time...DD2, You Got Served, Honey, The Company. I suspect they will all be released later this year.
You could also bring up some awesome dance movies from the past. Do an exhbit on the classics to help spark the dance craze.

I do. It's fun and it gives me ideas for my salsa dancing. Plus it's a workout and I *love* doing the isolations in the moves! :D

Used to, I would love to again. Right now, it's grad school. After graduation, I want to take a real salsa class and then I want to get back into hip-hop and maybe swing and definitely take a ballet class.

:D Gosh, there is a favorite article that was printed last year about hip hop dance's history, pioneers, festivals, congresses and it's future. It was soooo informative, helpful and I can't find it on the net right now, Blasted! I might have it at home and when I find it I'll post it. Meanwhile, I've posted some other info/articles you guys might find helpful as well.
http://www.online-thecatsmeow.com/images/Emoticons/thanx.gif for posting that article Spitfire.
Do any of you take Hip-Hop?
because I do take Hip-Hop!Yes, I take hip hop. If you've admired & watched the Soul Train Line on Soul Train for a long time, I guess you'd naturally want to put it in any other dancing you do. I'm taking some privates for glides(the pantomime feet influence), harlem shakes etc. and integrating it with salsa only because hip hop is always changing and new moves are being added just like any other dance form. It evolved from breaking, popping and locking and before that Soul/R&B Line dancing/Urban line dancing--and before that....Bop..Lindy Hop...well, you'll see in the articles.
Hip Hop Dancers have their own festivals and congresses too:

Next month Al Liquid Espinoza and Edie the salsa Freak are coming to my teacher's studio so I'll get a workshop and private with them. They have specific body roll partner routines that I adore. As you probably know they are known for mixing salsa and hip hop.

With respect to that new hip hop dance show called "360".
I think they should call it "360 Capoiera". The "street fight dancing" (even though a significant amount of hip hop came from it too before being altered---gangs battling it out in dance instead of killing each other) isn't really my preference but that's just me because I'm just not double jointed.
Still I can appreciate the limberness and athleticism.
