I'm starting a new, general thread so that we can go on and off topic as we please about the 2007 OSB. If a mod wants to merge it with the existing thread about entry fees, go for it.

This will be my first year attending OSB and I am psyched!

I was getting nervous over the weekend about booking hotel rooms having heard for so long that everything sells out. So since I had a few minutes this afternoon I thought I would call to make a reservation. I am kinda surprised at what I found and thought it would be a good idea to share those findings here.

Got these hotels from the OSB website.

Hyatt Regency - is for package holders only so don't bother calling if you are not buying a package. If you are on a package call the organizers to book.

Crowne Plaza - sold out

Drury Inn - sold out. Kindly offered to refer me to other hotels in the area.

Hampton Inn - had only a king with a pull out bed for $162/night. I booked it in a panic that there would be nothing else in the vicinity. Am planning to cancel this reservation-see below.

Marriott Courtyard - had availability with 2 double beds and a rate of $119 with a buffet breakfast each day. I booked it and I'm keeping it!

Red Roof Inn - sold out.

Moral of this story: hurry up and book your rooms people!

I'm investigating flights. It looks like skybus dot com has some interesting rates. $50 each way if you can be at their mercy for departure times. Skybus's hub is Columbus, OH. FYI.

I'll post again when I know more.

Awesome! I think the OSB website said it's 2 blocks from the venue, is that true? SO it's walkable then? I read something about the enclosed catwalk but I think that may have been for another hotel.

I cannot wait!

Merrylegs, thanks for the summary.. you saved me some time. Just booked at the Marriott as well.. HOpe it's safe to walk at night...

I have always walked it alone and felt safe...part of it can be walked indoors when the building across the street is open...which is nice when the weather is bad

Yeah, I hope it's safe too. Can anyone attest to the safety of the area?

Yeah, I can understand. I'm a born and bred city girl but something about not knowing what you're in for can be a bit worrisome.

Thanks.

I think the Marriott is where we stayed last year.

As fascination said, the walk can be good, but you've got to prepare for wind/rain given hair, garment bags, etc.

The area to me looked like a normal downtown - not too unsafe looking, but I also know that I wouldn't want my sister there late at night by herself . . . (DW's got the fascination thing going on, so she would be a poor example for me to use)

My pros have said for hotel rooms, come to them, as they've got rooms in the organizers' block and are setting up roommates among the students. This is good as it's one less thing for me to freak about. I'm in a minor battle about time off work--I should get OSB week, but Christmas is looking dicey (we're an after-school program, people, and it's Christmas--if you can afford to live where we're located, you can afford to take a few days off and watch your own damn kids for a while.) So I'm fussing over that. At least "What am I dancing" seems to be a fairly easy question for this one!

Bad neighborhood? Fah. (But then I'm from Detroit and I've lived in DC. YMMV.)

Those hotel rooms are for people on a package, I am not going to be on a package so therefore I must find accomodations outside of the Hyatt Regency.

Not that it's a contest, but I am a born and bred South Philly girl. I'd rather walk through the "toughest" city street than be alone in the woods. That's way scarier! ;)

I haven't been there in a couple of years, but downtown is not a "bad area", though it usually is completely deserted on the weekends. The weekend of OSB is usually the same that Buckeyes are
playing against Wolverines, not sure if this year is the same. If so, don't go near the university area,
the traffic is going to be horrible.
From my hotel search it seems the Holiday Inn (0.8 miles from the convention center) still has rooms.

So, what events are people dancing?

I *think* I'm dancing Silver Standard, probably a couple of levels. Not sure about any kind of scholarship/championship yet. I have no idea what session those might be in.

I'm very psyched to be going this year. Woo Hoo!

Sorry Merrylegs for the brief interruption . . .

For those going for their 1st time . . . if you're staying at the Hyatt Regency (I think), they run continuous loops of years of prior OSBs. You'll see so many people in their younger days. It almost worth it to go just to watch this!

If you're not staying there, find a friend (or make a friend) who is, and visit with them in their room to see some of it. You won't forget it.

Awww! Now I'm really bummed I'm not staying there!

I have seen some of that old footage and it is totally awesome. I love the white cat suits on the men for the latin division from the 80s. Weee!

And, earlier than that the women's dresses in Standard were poofy with crinolines, so scratchy and itchy. I'm glad those days are gone.

Yeah, it's like looking at old high school year books and trying to figure out who people are.

I sure am glad that fashion is gone! I used to watch the PBS show in those days thinking I could never wear anything so rediculous as those catsuits! They wore 'em for Standard too!!

I used to live in Columbus, downtown is pretty safe. When we would go downtown to the theatre I never felt worried. OSU and the state up north alternate who host the game, so on even number years stay away from campus (unless you're a Buckeye fan, in which case game day on campus is a blast :) ).

Sent entries and made all reservations this week. I decided to buy a package and stay at the Hyatt. Its a bit more pricey, but sharing room with friends to cut expenses.

I've been doing so much research on hotels and prices for OSB the past two weeks that I almost forgot that I'm competing in Hotlanta in less than 3 weeks! Don't want to look to far ahead and lose my focus so I won't even think about OSB until after Hotlanta.

My partner has finals that weekend... anybody want to meet up to dance Amateur PreChamp at the collegiate competition? I can't dance syllabus or novice anymore in internationals style, but I might be willing to do some Silver or Gold American level (though I don't really know the figures). If anyone is interested, PM me. I want to be there to see OSB and Max and Yulia's last american comp together, and I might as well compete while I'm there.

OK, so I am staying with friends in another hotel (cheaper and free breakfast) and my Courtyard by Marriott two night reservation (Friday, the 16th to Sunday the 18th) for a 2double-bed room is up for grabs on DF before I go ahead and cancel it. $119/night+tax. Anyone want it? PM me!

It's about a two block distance on High Street from Courtyard to the Hyatt. On one side of the street is the BWC (Bureau of Worker's Compensation) building and the main Nationwide Insurance plazas. On the other side of the street is the Bricker Federal Building and another Nationwide Insurance building.

After all this, I am now staying at the Hyatt Regency, d'oh!

I will cancel the Marriott reservation tonight so if anyone wants it please pm me and I can switch the res.

It's possible to get from Courtyard to the Hyatt spending very little time outside, depending if the buildings are open. The BWC building connects to Nationwide; traveling through Nationwide leads to an connector bridge going to the Hyatt. The connector bridge also links up to the Holiday Inn on Nationwide Boulevard.

There's always security personnel at the Bricker Federal Building, and I believe the surrounding buildings have security after hours as well.

Those of you visiting might want to check out the Arena District, which surrounds Nationwide Arena. There's a lot of restaurants and such, and it's close to the Hyatt.

Beginning November 16, 2007, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. is Wildlights at the Zoo. It's a celebration of winter, with the zoo decorated in more than 2 million lights. There is also ice skating, Santa Claus, and various activities for children and families.

Starting to panic, as my Smooth dress isn't here yet for a fitting. She said she'd mail it before she left for Hotlanta, but I'm thinking she didn't. (If she did, and it's gone missing, I'm REALLY up a creek.) I know it's at least going to need hemming and we're running out of time....

I'm mostly worried there's been either address confusion or a mail problem--I'm going to call tomorrow and check. I once had a bridesmaid's dress shipped UPS go missing for two weeks, and that was nerve-wracking enough when I had a couple MONTHS to spare.
