Hello,

I am completely new to dancing and ofcourse new to this forum as well.

I want to learn how to dance like the couple in this song...its from a recent Indian movie, check it out on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYLVo6YysQM

Can you tell me what type of dance this is so I can start figuring out where I can start learning this dance? It looks pretty difficult especially for somebody like me who doesn't dance at all, but I want to break from the mold and actually start dancing and dancing well!

For your info, im a 25yr old male, my partner would be my wife who is good at dancing in general but she mostly knows indian dancing and regular club dancing only. Also, though I love the idea of dancing, I am not good at any type of dancing and usually don't enjoy dancing, particularly because I know I am not good at it. My wife hates it because whenever we go somewhere where a little dancing is called for she has to go dance without me...she loves to just have me next to her doing whatever type of dancing even if I am not great at it...but the way I am I just can't enjoy something if I am not that good at it (and im VERY bad, lol). I think me learning to dance well, and then actually dancing more with my wife will improve our relationship as well.

I appreciate any responses and look forward to enjoy communicating with the people on this forum!

Welcome, Nanotech.

First, it's important to understand that the couple in the video was dancing a choreographed routine, not making it up as they go along. People often pay an instructor to choreograph a routine for a special occasion (such as a wedding), but if you just want to be able to dance in a similar style at dances, etc., you'll need to learn the basic elements of a dance style and how to lead your wife through them.

The routine appears to use many of the elements of Salsa, so if you find a good salsa instructor in your area, that would be a good place to start.

Alternatively, ballroom dances such as rumba, cha-cha and mambo could be helpful to you.

yeah I guessed it was probably Salsa, but wanted to as seasoned dancers like yourselves to be sure.

good point in that it is a choreographed dance which was probably done in several smaller clips, etc.

my goal is to dance like that, throughout the whole song without rest or anything if possible, within a few months.

also, do you guys think just learning at home by getting a couple of "learn how to dance in salsa" dvds is a good idea, are they worth it or should I just not waste my time at all and find an instructor?

I highly recommend taking a class or private lessons (you and your wife with an instructor). The DVD player can't recognize what you're doing wrong and correct you. And it's pretty hard for a beginner to do that for himself/herself.

Once you learn some basic technique and steps, a DVD can help you add to your repertoire of moves.

That's my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

Seriously... and with what seem to be a lot of Egyptian architectural/sculptural elements at that!

On the dancing front, I agree with IJ. What's being shown here is a a choreographed version of salsa (although very poorly danced from any technical standpoint I must add), and especially for beginners time with an instructor showing you how, and not only what, is by far and away the best way to go.

Definitely Bollywood salsa/rumba/jazz! which would make it bosaruja!

A little or this and a little of that. But mostly Salsa. Nanotech this is a routine and you don't want to learn a routine. You want to learn to dance. Watch out for teachers who want to teach you a routine. Plus am I the only one that saw a Dirty Dancing ripout in this dancing. Nanotech learn the steps and have fun with your wife.
