What dance were they doing?

This was a very steamy Rhumba show dance by I think Eugene Katsevman and Maria Manusova of New York. The dance got off to an awkward start because she lit up a cigarette as part of the act (the man comes in and sweeps her away from her boredom). The audience in clean-air-conscious Vancouver gave a vocal murmur when the cig was lit, but were very supportive of the dance because it truly was awesome.

That photo is pretty funny. It was actually a great audience. I'm surprised by the bland, unimpressed look on the faces in the picture, but that was only a small segment of 1200 people who were there. One of the guys in the photo is a huge supporter of DanceSport.

I'll confirm that Adwiz. The couple pictured (in the shot in question) are, indeed, Eugene and Maria.

The audience almost doesn't look real. Like they took a bunch of cardboard dummies up and set them about OR...it was some sort of backdrop.

I found the wheelchair ballroom dancing interesting. I'm kind of curious as to how that works. Is it mostly exhibition or are they actually judged? I'm not trying to be a smarty-pants...I was just wondering because it seems only one person technically dances and the partner just moves their arms and is pulled around the room.

The first time I heard of wheelchair DanceSport, I thought the same thing. When I first saw it a year ago, it wasn't too impressive. But at Snowball they showed the world's best and I was completely blown away by the power, energy and elegance of the dancing. I wasn't overly impressed by the Standard dances, but the Latin were sensational! The guy in the wheelchair (Piotr Iwanicki) does such a great job of interpreting the dance you don't really notice that he isn't using feet. He moves his body so superbly, and swivels and spins the chair so beautifully, even putting it on two wheels as he spins around the lady, that you are just stunned by the performance.

Thanks so much Vince (and Pygmalion) for the kind words. I have to admit that the form does look good, considering that I wasn't even aware of it that much at the time (typical competition nerves really mess with your confidence). I'll share your feedback with my lovely wife.

You're welcome . . . and you should forget about thinking about your form if it comes that natural. Look at your leg extensions - the same . . . your inside legs and pointed toes - the same. And you both are looking where you should be.

Someone was curious about a photo of myself dancing with my 15-year-old daughter. There's a decent pic by Richard Ellis at http://www.ubcdanceclub.com/gala/photogallery/richardellis/source/img_0322.html. It's distorted because the original is narrower than the web display, causing it to stretch in width and making is look wide, but the image itself isn't bad. We're obviously doing a Whisk in Waltz. I'm not completely thrilled with our form, but it's not a bad photo. We came in third in one of our events.
