Sunday I was chatting with my partner after a workshop and at some point mentioned Gustavo Naveira.

-Who?

She did not know him. And she's been learning A.T for five years.
/meh, I learned his name the very first day of my very first discovery workshop, when someone asked who was the best dancer in the world and the teacher answered Pablo Veron, Chicho and Gustavo. By then I knew only the first because of the Sally Potter movie, and it took me much more time to actually see the last two but at least I was familiar with the names.

I would be surprised if people on this forum who have been dancing tango for a while wouldn't know who he was. He's, what, in the top 5 of most famous tango dancers / teachers in the world?

But there are a lot of tango dancers who don't spend time doing workshops or reading about tango on the Internet, and instead spend their tango time just dancing in milongas and maybe going to classes with local teachers.

Also, there are many people who have no interest in tango nuevo whatsoever. I have friends in Buenos Aires who have been dancing for years and who have never heard of Pablo Veron. They're not interested in the stars of tango, just in the dance itself.

Everyone's different.

I am completely hopeless when it comes to names. Ignorance? Perhaps. Forgetfulness? Deffo. I can't even remember the name of my first boyfriend. He was Icelandic, a medical student and a Libran. That's all I remember. But where tango teachers are concerned, I tend to focus on what they're teaching and if it was very good, then I will take that memory with me. Not their names. That said, I'll remember their names if they stood out brilliant in some way - be it for good or for bad, but many of them are pretty much same ole, same ole and so they all blend into a sea of Good Argentine Tango Teachers and are thus relogated to the place where my first boyfriend's name resides. Putin, Musharaff, Ahmadinejad, Bush, Olmert yes. But Gustavo? Who?
