There seems to have been some trouble with the My Music lists of late, so I thought I'd start a thread(s) to highlight yours and my favorite songs for specific dances, and I'll lead off the CHA-CHA section with:

H-Gang: Donald Fagen

Do It Again: Steely Dan

Jump To It: Aretha Franklin

One Mint Julep: Ray Charles

Your turn--------------

Just about any version of sway. Dance with me, Sexbomb, I wanna, Smooth and Oye como vey are some of my favorites. ChaCha has a lot of music that I really like to dance to.

For sort of novelty tunes, I like Della Reese's album Della Della Cha Cha Cha. It's got "standards" like "Tea for Two," "Whatever Lola Wants," "It's Nice to Have a Man Around the House" ochestrated for cha cha (it's from the 60s when cha cha was first becoming a popular social dance in the US).

Another cute novelty song is "He Just Wants to Cha Cha," about a couple learning to dance. Very funny!

"Whatever Lola Wants" as cha? Huh. Either we have radically different versions, or I've just never listened to mine and thought of anything other than tango or AT. Hmmm...morning project...

It's a different version, re-orchestrated for cha cha. Some of the songs on that album are a hoot. "Tea for Two" as a cha cha?

"Suavecito" by Malo (1972) - I liked this song when I was a kid, and only realized last week that it was a cha-cha when it was played at a salsa club.

I'll give another vote for sway, even though it's horribly overused at all the comps/for showcases, etc. Heard a version last night that I didn't like quite as much as others, but was still better than some chachas I've headr at comps.

Sex Bomb is a great chacha, but i can't dance to it without laughing. Had an older (65+) gentleman at one of local studios do a showcase/exhibition number to this song with his pro and two others at some of our regional comps last june. To this day, i can't hear that song without thinking of this old man in an open chested latin shirt with a big gold medallion, and then I start laughing. Pro does same hting, i think she said he was parent of one of her students. And not that it was a bad number, it was a good number, they did it well, I still have to laugh though.

Most any "on 2" song by:

Joe Cuba, such as 'El Tramposo' and 'Tu Bombon'
Tito Puente, like 'Oye Como Va' and 'Chanchullo'

Maybe throw in some Eddie Palmieri with 'Cinturita' and 'Cuidate Compay'

As a fellow musician, you may appreciate these . . . I've really been trying to learn Latin and Reggae on bass . . . these have helped!

A nice cha cha is now playing in a hotel commercial. It's "Relax, Max" by Dinah Washington. Very cute. Great for a show dance. In the style of "Whatever Lola Wants". Kind of old style and funky, but very rhythmic.

I also like Mambo Italiano!! They play it often at the studio.. I went on line and got a couple versions of it but the "best" one is Rosemary Clooney and Frank Sinatra... IMHO...
