What *dance* related things do you think a person ought to do before 'they turn 50'? :D

Dance with their eyes closed.
Perform. (Coming from me, of all people...yeah, I know.)

In my case that would be 'dance with their eyes open'!

Hrrrummmph ...
Speaking as a grumpy over-50 person, it might be good to add why they must be done before the magic birthday and not after. I understand the concept of doing things as soon as possible, but remember ...
Better late than never!
Fifty is the new forty!
We're not dead yet!
Go, Jane Seymour! (I know she'd off DWTS, but she had a good run.)
Not to knock Peaches and her suggestions, but I have danced with my eyes closed and performed (though not both at the same time!) after 50. (She's right, those are good things to do at any age ...)
I challenge you to come up with something I can't do because I'm too old.

The splits!
A proper jive.
That amazing back movement Karina has? Must learn how to do that.
Look like I'm having SEX on the dancefloor while competing. YES.

Dance (the Waltz or the Foxtrot) with unrestrained joy with a certain ladyworldchampionofmanyyears, and look exactly as I feel.

Oh, and to steal experience of one of other members here (though who it was slips my mind), viennese waltz with your SO in ballroom of a castle.

Zhena, "50" was the number that came to mind when I thought of this thread. It was not meant to limit anyone in any way. I could have easily have written 70 (and upset those over 70 and still dancing) or I could have put 100 or even 150, seeing as people are seeming to live longer. But, as you wrote, the concept of doing things as soon as possible... or giving oneself a deadline of some kind.
Now, for those over 50 and perhaps now experiencing dancing due to changes in their personal circumstances, please feel free to read "50" as "100".
PS. There is a lady in her 70s, I think, dancing up a storm in the salsa world. Her energy surpasses many several decades younger. I hope to be dancing like that when I am 100!

ya know...I just want to dance every day that I am alive...and if I can maximize that by dancing with supremely good leads as often as possible, then I can forego heaven altogether

Oh, good one, Joe, I'd forgotten all about that.

Not me, least not yet, as I haven't even done anything besides my closed comps, so blackpool is so far beyond me that it'd just be fun (and a few days for me to try to steal steps, like I attempt at every comp :) ). In ten or twenty years or so when I get to the point where I might remotely think of a glimmer of a possibility of blackpool in the future, then it'd be depressing.

Compete at Blackpool.
Ditto! Technically, the IVDC is held at Blackpool every other year, so I'm competing there next year. :p
I should mention that my former bosses (studio owners) who were, IMO, complete crap as dancers, went to Blackpool many times to compete in the Open Amateur section. I found it completely ridiculous to spend so much time and money to get on the floor with another 200 couples while having no chance to even rank good... but eh. That's just me.

Actually TE, I would have to disagree with you. Were they overcharging their clients? Spending other people's people? Neglecting their children (if they have any), the parakeet? Cheating the tax man? It is their money, their experiences and they may have felt they did not stand a chance of ranking. HOWEVER....... they probably enjoyed the goal (preparing a routine/rehearsing FOR THEMSELVES rather than training others and watching from the sidelines), the experience (getting ready, meeting old/new friends), the buzz, the adrenalin high/rush. There are people who take singing lessons with zero chance of being a Shirley Bassey, Madonna, Perry Como or Justin Timblelake - similarly, dance lessons and perform, with no hope of being a Dame Margot Fonteyn, Sid Cerise or Gaynor Fairweather. Why do they do it? Because they love it. It is their money... a person's reasons for doing anything are not always about 'ranking'. At times, sometimes it is not always about ranking or winning, it is the taking part that matters. As the saying goes, it is better to have taken part, than not to have taken part at all.

I agree, Pacion. Of course you don't have to be perfect to dance. It's that Blackpool stands for everything cool and amazing in the world of dancesport, and I thought it was very hypocritical of them to be saying "we competed at Blackpool" like they actually qualified in some way for it. They just paid a big amount of money and went to dance a couple of rounds. I could do it, they could do it, a beginner could theoretically do it. Yet they "advertised" it like a big achievement when they nonchalantly mentioned it to their students.
I think that when Joe said "compete at Blackpool" he also implied "be ready to compete at Blackpool". Please correct me if I'm wrong, Joe. I'm assuming that basically anyone can compete at Blackpool...

T_E: Doin' it is one thing, but bragging about it? Competing, experiencing that particular competition from the dance floor - that could be a dream (see below) But bragging? to do that one would actuall have to get out of the first round . If not, then how to avoid the conclusion they came dead last?
And yes, its one of my goals too. It may seem rediculous to many, but its all wrapped up in starting ballroom late in life and the issue of 'impossible dreams' (thank goodness they have at least one senior catagory).

To dance a waltz with my wife on our 50th anniversary. Only 25 more years to go.

1) Open my own studio.
2) Volunteer with Pierre Dulaine's Dance Classroom program.
3) Drinks and dancing at the Rainbow Room in New York.
4) Dance with a certain professional from Dancing With the Stars. We'll call her Julianne H. (is that too obvious?)
5) Choreograph a friend's wedding dance.
6) Choreograph my own wedding dance.
7) Teach my parents to dance.
8) Run "Waltzing for LARPers" at GenCon.
9) Do the samurai swing/kenjitsu routine to "The Contender" I've been talking about for two years.
10) Do the 10-dance routine to the entirety of "Free Bird" I've been fantasizing about for the past year.
11) Compete in Battle of the Coasts for west coast at Swingers' Ball in Chicago.
13) Really understand why people love salsa so much.
14) Learn flamenco.

Heh, I have chosen not to post on a couple already this week because I realized I'd be embarassed by them later, or at least possibly (have had lots of posts like that since I started posting here that I then went back next day and deleted. Generally they were alcohol induced :) ).
I'm focused on the 50 dance thngs I'm going to do after 50
