She doesn't have a ballroom background, so there are few things that she really knows to look for.

Sometimes I feel like she does give good advice on a basic movement level, like telling someone to finish their lines or lower their shoulders,

Agreed. Up until this season she was usually spot on or more or less correct.

Whatever crawled up her...and died...really ought to get removed. ;)

I have a feeling that the Carrie Anne issue is hyped-up. Every season there is usually some controversy which helps keep people interested, and this seems one of them. Generally speaking, I do find her comments to be very sensible and spot on. As for the lift, and whatever Tony said, a lift in ballroom is actually having both feet of one dancer off the floor (not above the knee, a few millimeters of the floor is enough is enough to count as a lift) with assistance from the partner. So, she wasn't wrong in her call. And it didn't seem to affect the marks of Tony and Jane. It was time for Jane to go, and it happened way after the lift thing.

Does it really count as a lift if you are doing a move that sweeps both your feet around your partner on the floor (like Jane did in the disputed move) and your momentum happens to lift one foot off the floor for a split second? OK, ding her for insufficient control of the move, if you want to be that picky, but is it really a lift?

Yes, unfortunately, it is. But only if the judges want to be "picky". And, by definition, that's their prerogative.
Let's not forget that the judges really are entertainers on this show. If we want to start taking issue with their comments, I'd find fault with a lot more of the stuff they say than this lift issue.
I don't take the judging part of the show too seriously, anyway. But technically, if a dancer does a move that breaks the rules, it's the judge's job to call them on that. The whole "trick" in that sweeping move is to keep the feet on the floor. If the dancer fails to do so, then it's a fault.

:eek:All this season she has said some rediculous things. she has been so critical of jane and tony, i think thats y they r gona i think that shes holding a grudge against them

danceforlife567, the title and original post of this thread treads closely to violating our guidelines here at DF regarding "attacks on a person's character". I don't think that you've violated the guideline quite yet, but everybody please be very careful when addressing this subject...

All of the judges are annoying as h*** 9/10s of the time. But, that's television. That's entertainment.

she knows what she is taking about. The problem is that her standards are completely inconsistent. Sometimes she uses the standards that dancers would compare each other against and other times she is using much weaker standards. She needs to stick to one. It is like having paula and simon in one person, doesn't work. It would almost be better if she were SUPER nasty 99% of the time.

I am sure that none of this has absolutely nothing what-so-ever to do with building an audience for 'Dance War,' aka Carrie vs. Bruno.

If you notice, all of the judges take turns from week to week, one (or two) being the bad cop(s) while the other(s) play(s) good cop(s). The audience cheers and boos right along with it, and the powers that be at ABC take notes for marketing 'Dance War.'

It's television, boys and girls!

I think Carrie like whom she likes and if you upset her once - she gets stuck there. She has been more complimentary this season.

If the judges were all in agreement all of the time, or should I say consistently consistent, the entertainment value (to the average viewer) would be much less. And ABC wants viewers, not necessarily dancers to watch, true?

That's pretty much been the case since day 1. ABC doesn't care about the dancers in the viewing audience.

Through the wonder that is tivo, I've taken to fast forwarding through the judge's comments. They just annoy me. Then I ff through Samantha jabbering, I can catch the scores just fine in ff. The show is sooooo much more palatable just watching the training clips and the actual dancing!

Carrie Ann says "just a hair" a little too often. Almost as often as Samantha saying "and now, we will reveal in no particular order..."
