When you go to social (ballroom) dances, what types of dances are most common?

I'm going to list approximately (in order by most played) what I see:
Foxtrot, Swing, Waltz, Cha Cha, Rumba, Tango, Boloero, Quickstep, Samba, Viennese Waltz

There are few places that play Paso Doble, and Viennese Waltz is pretty rare, but there are a couple of studios where it is danced.

Here it's pretty much those you've listed and not much Samba or Viennese Waltz as well

For Samba when it is played most people at the studio where I go dancing do a line dance.

That depends on the dance of course, but if we're assuming just ballroom dances, at least the one I almost always go to, foxtrot is played quite a bit. Probably it's due to demographics and the tastes of the DJ. At the dance I usually help with when it comes to music, I just mix it all up with the standards and rhythms, along with some club dancing in the mix. The dances I usually only put one in for the entire evening: paso doble, nightclub two-step/bolero (which I just had my first lesson in last week and it resembles NC2S to me), merengue. Just about everything else (so far) gets put into mix mode.

Lots of foxtrot and waltz. Lots of rumba, cha cha, ECS and WCS. Very little samba or quickstep. Viennese waltz, almost never. :?

My venues...

Ballroom Dance Parties--a lot of foxtrot (which I like), rhumba, and waltz
Swing Dancing--East Coast swing (of course), Charleston, and Lindy Hop seem the most prevelent
Latin Dance Nights--Salsa and meringue...

I only go to the one venue atm.... And its a mix really .
Its a similar line up of dances every week,
always starts with the Cha Cha, then Evening 3 step, Tangoette, Charmaine , then a mix of latin, standard, NV and stret latin dances.

Works for me!

All these dances played, plus polka. How much of each dance played depends on crowd/dj and event.

California venues tend to include a good deal of WCS, Nightclub Two-Step, and Hustle as well as the usual "ballroom" dances.

. . . I agree jon . . .

The one that we go to (in Oakdale) once a week, does all the above, but adds an a Two Step about every 6th dance, an occasional Cha Cha, and maybe one Waltz during the entire night. The reason being, is that we get about 4 Pros and quite a few Advanced dancers (mostly from the Bay Area), and they like to do their routines, especially if it is a new routine, to see how the routine feels and to get audience reaction to it.
