I've always had a difficult time finding Waltz music that is exciting and inspirational. Too often the music sounds goofy or sad or elevator.
There are a couple that I really like now:
Nocturne and Papillon
There are several different versions of both of these that are good, but my version of Papillon is by the Olympic Standard Orchestra and Nocturne is Dancelife feat Bodane.

I would be very interested in this as well. Being a non-traditionalist, I don't hate traditional waltz music, just prefer something a bit different or a bit more modern.
Looking forward to replies.

I do a lot of waltz, even contra waltz, so some of my choices reflect the few times I've been to vintage dances and danced to some of their music.
On my personal waltz playlist (or list of favorites):
Open Arms by Journey
Rainbow Connection (yes, the one with Kermit singing)
Is It You (Shrek soundtrack), covered by Casaphon (Ballroom Fantasy)
If You Don't Know Me By Now
Que Sera Sera (the version by Pink Martini is really cool)
Lover's Waltz by Ungar and Mason (found on James Galway's A Song of Home)
Viennese waltz favorites
Amelie waltz
Once Upon a December (Anastacia soundtrack), covered by Casaphon (Ballroom Swing I think), but the original is a favorite
Piano Man by Billy Joel
Oh Jean by the Proclaimers (if you really like dancing VW)
Erin Shore waltz by The Coors (really one of my favorites, especially after the drum section... if you don't feel inspired and uplifted after that)

Two wonderful Waltzs . . . both by Secret Garden:
"Greenwaves" from Once in a Red Moon
"Serenade to Spring" from Songs from A Secret Garden
Both are extremely moving, and beautiful ... great for showcases!
if you want different, try baka beyond's meeting of tribes off their 'the meeting pool' album. the tempo is a little fast, but a lot of energy with the african drums.

I'm looking for waltz music that can be fun to choreograph a full (3-ish minute) routine to...and I haven't found anything that really rings my bell yet.
Suggestions?

I don't have clips for this CD (contemplating on getting one myself). But I remember there are a couple of really nice waltzes & very different (instrumental pieces, no vocal) in "The Last Summer" by Artemy Savchenko. You can buy it on dancesport-international.com
The only clip I found on the web was not good - it was the showpiece version of The Last Summer on one of the ballroom CDs. I think I like Snow White (first song) & the Nocturne better on that CD.
If anyone has this CD, would you please be so kind to make a few 10 sec clips for us to preview? :) :) :)

"Once You Had Gold" by Enya is a beautiful slow waltz. We used in once for a demonstration. It does have some subtle tempo changes that can be tricky, but it is worth the effort.

I wonder if he could handle it...
Thanks for the suggestion!
Keep them coming people. :)
Try david sanborn's cover of randy newman's "same girl": sad, lots of rubato. but it's only about 2:15... there are vocal covers that also might work, trina broussard & holly cole come to mind, or the original version on "welcome to paradise" (1983)

You really should buy Secret Garden's "Earthsongs" CD. Try to get the import version which has (I think) 3 tracks no included in the US version.

Does any one know if "Watermark" by Enya is a waltz-able song? I listened to a sample clip and it sounded like it occaisonally changes from 3/4 to a 4/4 time. I could be wrong. I was wondering if some one with the ablum might know.

From The Great Waltz, by Childsplay—most are very folk-ish:
Tourner a Trois
The Great Waltz of China (very Eastern harmonies)
Buster Keaton (very heavily syncopated)
Cue’s Mug
Hoekper’s Vals
April Waltz
From The Lover’s Waltz, by Jay Ungar—very folk-ish:
Give Me Your Hand
The Lover’s Waltz Duet
Legends of the Fall
The Mountain House
From Classics, by Sarah Brightman:
Alhambra
O Mio Babbino Caro (this is the version with the strictest tempo that I’ve found)
From Careless Love, by Madeline Peyroux—both moderately syncopated:
Between the Bars
Weary Blues

--Come Away with Me, by Norah Jones (Come Away with Me)
--Souvenir, by Paul McCartney (Flaming Pie)
--Irlandaise, by Rampal & Bolling (Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano)—beautiful, lyrical and different
--A Man You Don’t Meet Everyday, by Shane McGowan & The Pogues (???)
--Scarborough Fair/Canticle, by Simon & Garfunkel (Greatest Hits)
--My Skin, by Natalie Merchant (Ophelia)—some debate has been had about if it’s actually a v. waltz, I love it as a very fast waltz, I love the contrast b/t the actual temp and how slow it sounds
--Tristesse D’un Tango, by Quartango (Macadam Tango)—technically it’s an AT vals, but it works nicely as a waltz, some rubato

I did a piano recital with this piece a few years ago and remember it being quite lovely. In answer to your question about the meter for this song, it never changes to 4/4 time, so on the surface, it could be "waltz-able." But, those changes you're hearing are tempo changes. That song has a very fluid idea about tempo. You could use it for a showcase, I guess, but I wouldn't try to use it in a social dance setting. You'll drive the dancers crazy.

One of my favorite pieces right now for waltz is Adiemus by Karl Jenkins. I'm adding it to my My Music page.
Just wanted to add In the Garden, by Brad Paisley.
There are a few doctored versions of 'Watermark', which are very good, strict tempo ballroom songs. One is on one of the Bill & Bobbie Irvine Awards cds by Prandi (I forget which volume), and one is on a German cd and hence is titled 'Watermarck'. Try searching at dancetrax for them.
The original Enya song is beautiful and has occasional changes from 3/4 to 5/4 timing. I saw Nick Cotton & Debbie Avalos do a show to it when the album was first release, and it was amazing.

I have to second the version of "Come away with me" by Norah Jones.
Also I have recently taken a liking to a track called "Surrender". Im not sure who the vocalist is but its on this album - http://www.wrdmusic.com/details.asp?PID=943
I have also got an acapella track of "Amazing Grace" sung by, I believe, R Kelly. Its a sensational track. Its not strict tempo and it has breaks in it but its a beautiful version.

O Mio Babbino Caro is a beautiful song, but there are way too many tempo changes. Sarah Brightman is good but is one of my least favorite. She's to snobbish and too much of a diva. I cringe when she hits the high notes.

I think I read somewhere that Una Furtiva Lagrima by Puccini is in a 3/4 time signature meter. I have a question on a couple of other Pavarotti piece, Recondita Armonia (Puccini) and Torna a Surriento (De Curtis). Are those two also in 3/4 time signature? or do they switch back and forth to 4/4 as it sometimes seem to me.

Hard to tell about Recondita, but the other two are. Although unless they've been strict-tempoed the tempo changes make them really hard to dance to.

For social dancing (choreography on the fly) or competition (set choreography to strict tempo) I agree. I've wondered, though, if it matters that much for a showcase. If a singer or orchestra can negotiate tempo changes, why can't a dancer?
It would take some analysis and some practice, but if it truly follows beautiful music... Why not?

The musical term is spelled "ritard" with an I.
White Chacha

It's short for the Italian "ritardando".
Peaches
12-12-2006, 08:05 AM
Well, without hearing the music, and not being completely up on my musical terminology...
I'd wager that the slowing and stretching of the time signature are probably various fermatas (holds), instead of ritardandos. The difference, IIRC, is that a ritard. is a gradual, even slowing throughout the measure (or measures), whereas a fermata is a holding of a particular note/beat/whatever, while what comes before and after is generally at tempo. Again, IIRC. Cornutt or I_J would probably know better.
I don't see why, if you're doing it for a showcase and therefore have the ability to plan the choreography around the music, you couldn't use it anyway. Granted, I've never done a showcase and have no experience with choreography, so what do I know? (Answer: nothing.)
Al Gisnered

Answer: Quite a lot. Isn't choreography supposed to be the selection and arrangement of movements to interpret and illuminate a piece of music? If, for example, whole orchestras can follow changes in tempo or if singers can stretch notes and phrases while the orchestra waits for them, why can't dancers follow such variations?
One of the things I find most unsatisfying about most competition dancing is the competitor's inability to suit the dance to the music. I often see them performing the exact same routine in preliminaries and finals to totally different music in each heat. "Ornaments" and "emphatics" (such as picture lines, spins, and such) which might work wonderfully when performed with the music often end up a measure or two before or after the musical "ornament". So the entire dance seems out of kilter and artificial, rather than an on target and an organic blend of the dance and music. (Sometimes they win anyway.)
In a showcase, unlike a competition or social dance, you have the chance to analyze a piece of music and arrange the dance specifically for it. Including any tempo changes. You can to put the ornaments in the music and ornaments in the dance together.
Peaches
12-12-2006, 12:51 PM
You should try AT. The difference between AT where the focus is specifically on musical interpretation, wher a good leader can play with the music and the rhythm and highlight various things (vocals, beat, an instrument) versus ballroom is just staggering. Even when there's no routine involved, ballroom just feels so...sterile...compared to AT that way. Of course, I still love it, but for other reasons.

Well, what kind of a feel are you looking for? Do you prefer the classic tunes (Fascination, my version is by Al Martino, IIRC), or alternative stuff (She's Leaving Home, by The Beatles--although it's fast, or You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Woman) by Aretha Franklin)? Do you like syncopation (Buster Keaton, by Childsplay) or not? Something mid-tempo, or very slow, or verry fast? A standard of ballroom waltzing that everyone loves, or do you want to find something new and unusual? What feel are you going for with your showcase? Do you have any theme in mind?

We are looking for a faster waltz, but not quite viennese. Something with playful music that lots of lifts could be choreographed to (crescendos and the like). Very open to unconventional music, but want the overall feel of the song to upbeat (not depressing or sad) like the couple is in love.

unfortunately, so she dances is almost 5 minutes long. trimming out the intro brings it down to 4:30 which is probably ok but i'd hate to dj a lot of songs that long - that would bring it down to only 13 dances in a hour. i aim for about 16/hr or 4 every 15 minutes.

"The Truth" by Si*Sé is maybe the most sensual sounding VW I have ever heard... it sends chills down my spine...
btw fasc, the Alicia Keys song is just called "Fallin'" ... I had not heard it before but when I searched iTunes for it I discovered that that's the name. :-) It's like the song I mentioned above, if you were going to dance to it at a more reasonable tempo you'd have to slow it down maybe 3-4 percent to get it to international tempo, and even further for american. Both HOT songs ! :-) Oh, and I did a show number to Iris once--it's so pretty!

Oooh...love "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys...dance AT to that quite frequently.
For VW, I love "La Del Ruso" by Gotan Project (love how odd it is, and the syncopation, and the unbelievable swing to the music).
I also love "Will and Elizabeth" from the Pirates of the Caribbean score (the first one). It would work for a showcase, but not social dancing, because there are either two or three spots where it switches from 3/4 to 2/4. Again, I love the syncopation. (Actually, a lot of the music from the Pirates scores is in compound meter.)
Edit to add: A drawback to a lot of the Pirates stuff that's in 6/8 is that it's not uncommon for the music to switch from emphasizing the two sets of three, to emphasizing three sets of two. One of the wonderful pitfalls of 6/8 stuff that makes it so intriguing.

[quote=Pirate Smith;555741]I have been trying to update.. and I mean UPDATE.. the Waltz Music... my teacher uses.... If I have to dance to "The Story of Tina" one more time.. the world will be short one dance instructor.. most of the suggestions here.. are for experienced dancers.. now I personally
Akkk i know what you mean! I was never a bit fan of Elton John's Candle in the wind... The tribute to Dianna version
.. But for some reason it's the waltz of choice at our studio.. They could at least use the other version of Candle in the wind is a song about Marilyn Monroe..
But you all have some great suggestions here and i'll take them into consideration if we ever do a routine to a waltz...

one of my favorite now is "If I Were a Painting" by Kenny Rogers, but be warned, it is slooow, i think it's around 25 bpm. that's what I like though, illegally slow waltzes!

My favourite right now is
Antichi Ricordi by Rondo Veneziano ( 29 bpm) 3:50 min

Yup, I love that one... just not enough else (if anything) on that double CD to get me to buy it. Along cheerful lines, I like 'Distant Melody' from Ballroom Desire (nice show length at 1m 55s), and not as cheerful I really like 'A Moment Lost' from Ballroom Fascination.

I sympathise with Pirate Smith about Story of Tina. When i was doing my silver medal classes in 1963, my teacher played "Singing Piano" by Victor Silvester every blasted week: diddly-DEE, diddly-DEE, diddly-DEE, diddly-DUM . . . drove me mad. The record came up on ebay recently and I bought it. It was 49p, and actually is quite a nice tune. I might even play it again in another 45 years time, if I'm still around . . . bit unlikely though.

Being partial to rock, in addition to those mentioned by others in this thread (Natural Woman, Take It To The Limit, Are You Lonesome Tonight), my list would include:
Beatles - Here, There and Everywhere
Byrds - Hickory Wind
Elvis Presley - Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall
Flying Burrito Brothers - Sin City
Jackie Deshannon - What The World Needs Now
Moody Blues - Go Now (a bit fast)
Wings - Mull Of Kintyre
I'm not aware of any waltzes by Lancelot Link and the Evolution - but I'll look into it.

If you're not opposed to country music, it's packed with waltzes of different speeds.
Just a few:
Can I Have This Dance - Anne Murray
Broken Wing - Martina McBride
You Look So Good in Love - George Strait
I'm Still a Guy - Brad Paisley

The theme from the movie "Finding Nemo" actually makes a gorgeous waltz. Specifically, the title of it is: Main Title: Nemo Egg. I'm serious.
A strict-tempo version is on Dance House's Standard Music 3 CD.

Not sure if anyone's suggested this yet, but Dreamcatcher by Secret Garden, and Wild Child by Enya are pretty interesting numbers.

first, welcome to dance forums.
if you want strictly instrumental and moving, I suggest Apassionata by Secret Garden, it's on a CD called White Stones, track no.9. Be warned, it is very slow, too slow for strict tempo. But boy is it melodic, moving, and extremely waltzable.

the correct spelling is Appassionata
There is a strict tempo version on the "Ballroom Classics Three" album.

do you just dance to the original music? it's kinda fast isn't it, for a waltz?

I do use the original version, but not for competition practice. It could be slowed down a bit if you prefer it at strict tempo.
