Can someone give me a list of the top 10 Dancesport dancers in the world?
Professional as well as Amateur?

I know that Bryan and Carmen held the title for several years, but did the short "retirement" bump them off?

If you go to Dancesportinfonet you can see all the world rankings for all the catagories. There is also the IDSF site that will give you the same details.

Pardon the hijack, but would, for my curiosity's sake (there's a method to my madness), please clarify exactly (if possible) what a World Champion is? Bryan Watson is, because he won the Pro Latin at Blackpool, correct?

Is one a world champion if they "only" won pro rising star Latin at Blackpool? Honestly- ANYthing Blackpool is to be commended... but for my own curiosity's sake, I need to split hairs for a moment.

Blackpool is the British Champ.-- not to say they could not hold a seperate worlds there.

However, it was decided many yrs back , to hold the events in different locations outside of the u.k.
Its a seperate entity unto its self .

Rising star- is just that-- nothing more-- nothing less .Just the means of stepping one more rung up the ladder .

The comparable thing in Amat. exists-- World championships have to be designated as such, and may be held in different locations , if they-- the powers that be-- so decide .

Add to that mix-- National Champ. and Regional . Plus Closed and Open

Define "Dancesport." You want the top 10 Ten-dancers? Top 10 Standard dancers? Top 10 Latin dancers?

The rankings confuse me! How is it decided how many points you get from different events? It makes me head hurt trying to understand! I'm a tennis fan as well and I don't understand that fully either!

Also, does each dancer bring ranking points to a new partnership? I was wondering this yesterday when I was looking into what Jonathan & Hazel/Arunas & Katusha are up to!!

wow, a confused bunch of people here:-)

you are a professional Blackpool champion if you win a professional Standard or Latin in Blackpool. You are an amateur Blackppol champion, if you win the amateur event. If you win a Rising star event, you are a Rising Star Blackpool champion.

If you win at UK Open, you are a UK Open champion.

Blackpool champion title is a very important title, probably the most prestigious title in the world. But i is not a World champion title. to become a world champion, one has to win the World championship.

The competition hosting an Amateur World Championship is appointed every year by the IDSF (one for standard, another for latin, and for 10dance + different age categories).

The professional World championship is the event chosen and designated as such by the WDC (hope i got that right).

to complicate things further, in last few years few more amateur and one more professional leagues have sprung up, and they host their own world championship events.

finally, regarding the rankings.

the IDSF has an official ranking for dancesport athletes. Points are granted according to placements at recognized IDSF competitions. there is a catch: even if you are super good, if you don't compete much, you will not earn as much points as someone of the same level who competes a lot more.

there is no such ranking for pros by the professional organization as far as i know.

the dancesportinfo ranking is created using a different formula. it takes into account all comp results recorded in dancesportinfo database, regardless of them being recognized by either organization. The dancesportinfo ranking is unofficial.

So at face value, every time we're at a social and this studio's minions start with this, "Well, you know *insert name* is a WORLD CHAMPION"... they're actually incorrect... and now I can tie into them and say "No, actually- while he held a respectable title LAST CENTURY before falling off the face of dancesport to peddle polka videos, he wasn't even World Champion. Please research your facts before parroting what your teacher tells you, it's wrong, and you still suck because you over-rotate a left box AND never close your feet!"

... Right?

will you sell tickets for this event? Could beat kick boxing and bear bating combined...

... I'm takin' it as a yes!

So how does selling tickets factor into amateur status- you could just make a donation to the studio I attend for "scholarship", right? *snicker*

It's just really annoying. It's their "Four touchdowns in one game at Polk High" claim to fame. All they have to identify themselves. I feel bad for them.

Thank you, Kitty, for taking the time to clarimuddify my confusion.

Wow. I really need to go ebay for some dresses.

I refer to dancesport as both styles (LA and Standard)

Thanks Kitty, thats what I was looking for. The reason I was asking was becuase I always hear about Blackpool and other competitions but never of an event actually called "world championships" so I was always wondering what definition of "best dancer in the world" to go by.

You are welcome.

you might hear less about world championships because not everyone can go there, only two (sometimes one) couples per country chosen (usually at nationals) to represent that country.
Here are results from a recent world championship event:

Would you rather be the world champion or be the best dancer?

In todays dancing world, actually winning a comp might not have anything to do with your dancing, sad but true. Just don't understand this the wrong way.

I asked this question to a panel of the greatest people in dancing and there were somewhat mixed responces. Everyone kinda paused for a bit to really think about it.

Some of the best dancers don't even compete.

Alright let me be clearer then mud then.
Dancesport for me is not the American style of dance.
International Latin and Ballroom has always been my preference.

As for the rest of you, I agree 110%. I've surrounded myself around many great athletes and doing it for the passion is what really brings their skill out.
As for myself, I never wanted to be deemed a "professional" in anything because I do it for the love of it, not for the $$.

It seems like in the dancing world, many people do it as a way of life, and it's so perplexing to me.

well LAC that really doesn't change the fact that all 4 styles are part of dancesport as it is currently defined, at least in the U.S...I would also say that doing something for the love of it and making money at the same time are not entities that cannot co-exist...many people do what they love for a living....my husband is an attorney ..it is his vocation...he loves it...that he makes a boatload doing it is icing on the cake, not the reason he loves it

I'd love both, but in the end I would far prefer the latter

Ok thanks for clearing that up.
Yea, I was thinking more along the lines of something that could be seen as a hobby, such as dance.
