A former ballroom/latin dance teacher used to say to us, to try and get us "in character", something along the lines of:

jive/samba - meeting each other for the first time (light and carefree)
rumba - when the romance is "hot"
waltz - you are newly weds
paso double/tango - several years of marriage
quickstep - (I don't remember :oops: )

and so on. Has anyone heard something similiar? Do you remember what the various dances "represented"?

And where would salsa fit into the picture :wink: One might say hopefully through out the entire timeline but :D

Wow . . . what a coincidence . . . I heard the very exact same thing this past Saturday while taking some advanced NC2S dance privates. I wrote them down . . . I'll see if I can find my notes a relay them back to you.

The dances were quite different, but the impact was "shocking."

Get back to you very soon on this.

Here you go, right from my notes . . . sounds pretty close, but the dances differ. It all stemed during our NC2S privates . . . as a lot of the routine focused our eyes on the audience. The choreographer changed the routine, saying that the NC2S is a dance that says . . . see below . . .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2-Step: Friends, part time, you meet him/her, you have fun, fun, fun. Starting out as friends.
WCS: "Hey, he's kinda cute . . . she's kinda cute . . . flirting. "I think I could like her/him." "Maybe he'll ask me out?" "Maybe she'll go out with me?"
Cha Cha: They begin dating. "Wow, I am attracted to you!" "You are SO SEXY!"
Waltz: Things are getting serious now. He's planned a wine and dine date for her He's picked out the nicest restaurant in town, complete with candlelight, soft music, and all attention is for her. They admit to one another, 'they are in love.'
NC2S: It's their first night together. They plan to make love to one another for the first time. They only have eyes for one another. They passionately carress one another, an audience is looking inside their bedroom window . . . but they don't even know the audience is there.
ECS: They have met, they have a great relationship. They date now on a regular basis. Their love is wonderful. They are so very happy together . . . let the whole world know!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Keeping similar things in mind while dancing . . . will change your dancing.

The choreographer used 2-Step right off, but other dances, maybe "Quick Step" could work here???

Some of my students create alter-egos for when they dance...
one lady becomes "Consuela" when they dance their tango and he becomes "Fernando". That way they have a roll and a character to portray. Lots of my students do this.

Steves dance alter-ego is FoxtrotBob...I love hearing people cheer for us and yell that. And actually my nickname since I was a toddler is Boo. So when I get home to the Mid-west to compete, there are my friends and family...cheering really loud "BOO". I think people around them must think they are nuts, but it helps us to get into character...

Long story. Needs its own thread in the swing forum, I guess. I pooped now, but I'll start one in the AM. :wink: :D

This is totally cool. 8) I hope the audience can tell the difference between boo :evil: :x and Boo! :D :banana:
