Acronyms or abbreviations anyone?

Since joining this forum, thanks to Vince A I have picked up a few new ones :wink: As he put it:

My bad. I work for the government and we live by talking in acronym! :wink:

So, what other acronyms do you use in daily life (or here on DF) and don't give a second thought to, untill someone says - what does that stand for?

I'm sure I could make up a few other acronyms:

CLS: can't lead squat
CFS: can't follow squat
WDWHIHFO: would dance with him/her if hell froze over
PGSS: pogo-sticking samba (motion)
NFD: No-frame dame/dude
MDD: Mack-daddy dancer

Of course, I would likely wind up assigning many of these as eponymous terms (which are inside jokes, referring to people exhibiting characteristics of the above). It's even better to make up terms.

Yep. I say ASAP (ay- sap) all the time... well, only when I mean to do something ASAP, which is a lot less often now that I'm getting old and ornery. :roll: :lol:

And it's interesting you should make that distinction. We just had this conversation over in another thread (um .. nettiquette?) According to the latest online version of Merriam Webster (one of the handful of dictionaries that defines common usage of American English,) the requirement that acronyms make new "words" of their own seems to have melted away. Now ASAP, FBI, etc., count as acronyms. Maybe everybody used the term incorrectly enough that the linguists have changed the definition? :? But there you have it. *shrug*

The really short answer:

Microprocessors have control lines (pins wired to other chips) that they use to control those other chips. They have a set of control lines for read from and writing to memory.

Intel µP's (used in Windows boxes) also have another entirely separate set of control lines for controlling I/O (input/output) devices, plus they have an entirely different set of software commands for controlling those I/O devices. I forget what the term is for this approach to I/O.

But another way to do I/O is what Motorola µP's (used in Macs) do, which is to treat those I/O device interface points (called "registers") as if they were memory locations indistinguishable from the memory locations in the actual memory devices. That is called "memory-mapped I/O".

Well, almost indistinguishable, because most I/O registers are either read-only or write-only, so, while actual memory locations are both readable and writable (except for ROMs) that would make certain I/O "memory" locations read-only and others write-only. Some I/O "memory" locations could be read/write, but usually that would be by mapping two different registers to that same memory address.

Hence "write-only memory" being something that's actually useful.
