Kat, I don't have any answers but am very interested in making this trip this year. I hope someone comes along and has advice.

I'm flying into Heathrow and am taking a train to Bournemouth. I'm sure that there is a way to get to Bournemouth by train from Gatwick, even if you have to connect in London -- I used http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ to figure out train schedules and prices.

As far as hotel goes, I used hotels.com and booked into the Hermitage. I have no idea if the place is any good, but it's supposed to be right by the Bournemouth International Centre and when I booked it back at the beginning of October, it was $92/night including taxes. It seems to be booked up now, but hotels.com has other places in the area. I also like to use Venere.com to find places to stay in the UK and Europe.

See you there! I'll be watching on the 23rd and the 24th.

The train station is in Gatwick airport. I took the train from Gatwick to Portsmouth a few years ago. It goes straight south to Brighton turns right towards Portsmouth etc. I suspect it keeps going from there towards Bornemouth. The train system in England is fantastic. Good Luck Kat.. sounds like an awesome trip.

thetrainline.com - can book your tickets on line (gatwick to bournemouth with one stop in southampton)

travelodge.co.uk - a good quality chain sometimes for 20gbp for the room per night (and the room sleeps 3 or 4)

ryanair.com - has links to cheap hotels

or

you can wait till you get there and find something (always possible, more often than not good value)

20 pounds per person per night is like $80 usd total for the two of you per night. You might be better off getting a cheap hotel room ahead of time. Try venere.com to get an idea and then check the price on hotel website which is usually cheaper. If you google, there are also 15% (or 10%) off venere coupons all over.

While I did not use the train from Gatwick Airport while there on business travel, I remember it is right beside the airport, which, hopefully, should allow you to arrive, pick up your luggage and move to the train station without needing a cab.
