On Wednesday night I start talking with this lady and she says that I do American style bachata and that cuban is the way to go. So, what style bachata do you do, and if you do Cuban style got any tips?

What's the difference between the two? I do bachata but have no idea about different styles.
And doesn't the bachata come from the dominican republic? I wouldn't expect a cuban style, maybe a dominican style and a western style but cuban style??

I hope the lady is referring to Dominican Bachata when she says cuban. As per what I have come to understand about bachata. A few differences between American Style bachata and Dominican is mainly distance between the partners and when the little hop is taken in the dance and the amount of patterns.
Stright up domincan old school bachata is danced, litteraly, Cheeck to cheeck, very mininal patterns, yet walking the floor.... And hoping on the 4 count.
where as the Americanized version has more patterns and the distance between the dancers is greater. The hop is either taken on 1, or the 4 but it seems that hopping on the one has become more of the norm. And besides the movement caused by the 1 2 3 4 there isn't much moving around the floor.
But if the lady is really talking about Cuban Bachata, she might just be confused trying to say Cuban Danzon.

Yep yep - thats how we dance it, and exactly how it was taught to me by the Dominicanos and Cubanos in my familia.(scary they both agree on something...)
After doing Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia for about 2-3 hours I can always use a nice bachata to cool off a bit and catch a breather!

I don't know the difference either, but I picked it up from native latin Americans, thus it must be Cuban style. Sure is a fun, non-strenuous dance!

i think she really meant Dominican..
As for American.. never heard it called that way.. possibly due to people doing it with more influence from On 1 LA style.. borikensalsero's post sums it up good.
Both are cool.. yet if i want sabor = Dominicana por favor! :D
