How did it come about?
I only discovered it by chance and as I play "catchup" am amazed by the knowledge, the friendliness of everyone and that I am in the company of champions  Wow, oh wow, oh wow!

Unfortunately I have to get to campus at the moment, but I'll try and give you the history of the DF later today (unless DanceMentor gets to it first?)!

OK, so I'm a day late... :?
So, in brief, here’s the deal… (please note, there have been *many* members who have contributed to the growth of these forums, some as former moderators and many more through their participation. As a history of how the DF came about, most of those I’m mentioning by name are members of the current administrative team)
DanceMentor first launched these forums (back on September 18, 2002) out of a desire to have a place where quality information about dance could be discussed and exchanged free from commercial interests.
Of the currently active members the earliest to join the DF include Spitfire who joined on Jan 24, 2003, as the 19th member and Larinda McRaven who joined on Feb. 7, 2003, as the 20th member.
I stumbled across this site and joined on March 28, 2003, as the 38th member. While I was (and am) a member of several other dance discussion sites, I really liked the lack of commercial interest associated with this site and, after my initial participation, was invited to become a Moderator, first of the ballroom forum and shortly thereafter of the salsa forum as well. Not too much later, as we started adding other active moderators, I became Site Moderator.
Salsarhythms joined on April 4, 2003, as the 46th member and became moderator of the Salsa Forum on April 19, 2003. Vince A. joined the DF, as the 88th member on May 16, 2003 and d nice joined on July 10, 2003 as the 128th member (at the moment I’m unsure of the exact dates that they both became Swing Forum moderators, but it was sometime in August 2003). The next member of the current team to join was Swing Kitten who joined on Aug. 10, 2003, as the 185th member, and became Dancers Anonymous and Funstuff & Inspiration moderator on Sep 9, 2003. Pygmalion joined as the 210th member on Aug. 22, 2003 and became Ballroom moderator on Sep. 8, 2003. Our resident poet, Borikensalsero, joined us on Aug. 27, 2003, as the 225th DF member, and joined Salsarhythms as a Salsa moderator on 23, 2003. MadamSamba joined the DF on Oct. 4, 2003, as the 296th, and took over as Argentine Tango moderator on Jan 23, 2004. The last member of our current team to join was Sagitta who joined on Oct. 23, 2003, as the 336th member, and joined Vince A. as moderator for General Dance on Dec 19, 2003.
Here are some other historic events/milestones in the evolution of the DF…

I also want to support SD's point. We might not be here now if not for the work and support of some folks who, for whatever reason, are not currently with us. MissAlyssa, I miss you. You were a great and fun DF contributor, and you really helped get the DF ball rolling. I know you're busy now, with your jobs and your life, but don't think your contribution has been forgotten. It hasn't. 8)

Yup, many, many others have contributed to making the DF what it is today. Or, mor3e accurately, *everyone who's ever posted* has played a role!
Just to name a few more, some of the more substantial contributions from those not currently part of the DF staff include:
Spitfire, who initially suggested seperating non-dance items from the general forum... a suggestion that I later revived and from which DanceMentor created the DA.
MissAlyssa, who jumpstarted the forums with what is still a record (70+ posts in one day!!!) and was a moderator for F&I & DA.
Will35, who singlehandedly kept the AT forum running for quite some time.

I think that's an artificially inflated number. That was the day we were making the transition from one web host to another, I believe. I don't think that 110 is correct. Bummer. :? But, the way we're going, it will be soon. :D

[Note: everything above this is from almost three years ago]
Some questions about DF history came up in this thread (http://www.dance-forums.com/showthread.php?t=15927) in the salsa forum, so I'm updating this thread... (sorry for any repetition, I'd written up what follows before I remembered this thread)
OK, some very brief DF history... founded by DanceMentor, who at the time was also the webmaster for Showtime Dance shoes, DF was originally launched in September 2002 as a non-commercial source for discussion and information about partner dancing. To say that the membership numbers and activity levels were low at the time would be an understatement, as I was only the 38th member to register when I did so nearly five months later, on March 28, 2003. What most attracted me to DF at the time was its non-commercial nature, and in fact I had started a yahoo group (ballroom life) around the same time for similar purposes [1]. DF was still in its infancy at the time, and as I originally became one of the more active posters in ballroom, DanceMentor invited me to help out as a moderator for the Ballroom and then the Salsa forums. Then, later that year, and as we began to grow, I became the ‘Site Moderator’, essentially splitting the ongoing administration of the DF between the technical (DanceMentor) and the content (SD).
An indispensable part of this growth—and really one of the underlying keys to the success of DF (and least in my mind)—has, of course, been the tremendous series of moderators we’ve had over the years. Some of the past mods are long gone from DF, some still mods, and others still active members, but each and every one of them has spent more time and effort trying to help the DF be the best that it can be then I think almost anyone (but other past/current mods) really appreciates. More than just time, dedication, and headaches, the mods suggest new ideas, shoot down bad ones and, overall, help ensure that the DF is never just about ‘status quo’ for long, but rather about always trying to see what we can do better. Especially in a forum this size we can’t please everyone, but all the mods have helped tremendously in making sure that there are a variety of perspectives voiced and represented as the DF continues to evolve and develop.
As far as the growth itself, over the next two years, with DanceMentor and I as administrators and with the great staff of volunteer forum moderators helping run the site, DF emerged as the largest and most active English language partner-dance website in the world [2]. Still primarily a discussion board—as it started out—DF has added several additional features over the years, some used more than others, such as a dance directory (http://www.dance-forums.com/directory/), photo album (http://www.dance-forums.com/album/), dance music guide (http://www.dance-forums.com/music/), competition and event guide (http://www.dance-forums.com/competitions/), and google map (http://www.dance-forums.com/VBGooglemap.php).
And, just to put some of the numbers in perspective, please realize that two years ago today we had just gone over 24,000 total posts while, as I am writing this, we are over 366,825! While there have been growing pains (sometimes more than others), the DF remains a non-commercial site [3] intending and dedicated to serving as a clearinghouse for “quality information about partner dancing of all kinds.”
[1] Somewhat ironically, due to the success of DF that yahoo group never went anywhere, although technically it still exists.
[2] In early 2004, for instance, we were averaging over two thousand posts per week and well over one million page views per month.
[3] All operating costs are derived from Google ads and periodically solicited member donations and fund raising efforts (such as an annual silent auction conducted on line).

Yeah, a bit odd for Joe, I must say. Although you got top billing above some other chick-y on the mistletoe thread, so not wholly unsupported. (I remember only b/c I had to look up the other chick-y.)
...but in double checking to make sure that my memory was not wrong about the mistletoe thing...
I get a kiss, Fascination, for the same reason as Joe? B/c I have "an edge"??? Waltz Tango Foxtrot? I don't have an edge? No edges in sight! I've got some curves going on, but, alas, no edges. I feel very maligned...
How do people keep getting this impression of me??? My teacher seems to have the same impression, and I've only every been nice to him, too. I don't get it.

i bet you're really a marshmallow... a diamond-shaped marshmallow, the edges hiding your inner squishiness. ;)
In real life I actually am, very much, a marhmallow. Although I think I object to being compared to a marshmallow, on general principle. I'm actually very quiet, very shy, extremely non-confrontational, and very easy going. It takes a hell of a lot to get me to push back at anyone. The only exceptions, and the people who know me to be feisty, are DH, my immediate family, and a few very close friends.
Admittedly, sarcastic comments are something of a forte, but that hardly gives me an edge. ...And hardly justifies being called a b***h by my teacher, although not in so many words...
I don't know where this edge idea comes from...
OK...un-hijack.
Oh...and another thing! Regarding the diamond shaped marshmallow, with edges hiding squishiness...I'd say it's more the other way around. Generally nice and marshmallow-y, but with a pretty solid center.

Although mentioning the additional cost of competing is a good way of shutting up DH when he gets on my case, I've found.

Eh. You and me and Hobbes. The social contract and all that. If you want to be part of a community, you have to decide whether you're willing to live by its rules. It's that simple.
When I left DF, I left because of the censorship. But now I just don't care. There are so many things more important to me than which curse words get censored and which ones don't. It just doesn't matter to me anymore. It's that simple.
