Hey every one,
DW like to do a Foxtrot for a showcase routine and she would like to do it to a sassy and jazzy foxtrot.
I suggested "Baby is Cold outside" and "Moondance" and she did not like it.
So here I am asking for your input to give me some ideas on some sassy and jazzy foxtrots.
Thank you in advance to every one.

Amer. or Intern ? and what level ?
If only Christina Aguilera's "Nasty Naughty Boy" was faster . . . ! It's only 19mpm - waaaaaay too slow (and perhaps a bit too steamy for some audiences).
"Minnie the Moocher," (25mpm) Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
"Fever," (32mpm) Michael Bublé - Come Fly With Me
"You're The Boss," (31mpm) The Brian Setzer Orchestra - The Dirty Boogie
"I Won't Dance," (34mpm) Jane Monheit with Michael Bublé - I Won't Dance from Taking a Chance On Love - Single
"This Business of Love," (30mpm) Domino - The Mask: Music from the Motion Picture
"Speaking of Happiness," (28.86mpm) Gloria Lynne - The Ultimate Ballroom Album 4
"Is You Is Or Is You Ain't (My Baby)," (29mpm) Dinah Washington - The Ultimate Ballroom Album 5
"Take My Love, Take My Love," (29mpm) Shirley Bassey - The Ultimate Ballroom Album 6
"He's A Tramp," (29mpm) Peggy Lee - The Ultimate Ballroom Album 6
"Maddest Kind of Love," (29mpm) Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Hope that helps!

If you need a good slowfox, "Feeling Good" by Buble is a good one.

Hmm, for bronze am fox you'd need something faster, around 32MPM. Most of what's on the ballroom CDs is at 29 or slower.
You might check the version of "Fever" on Ultimate Ballroom 5. You might be able to tweak the tempo enough to get it where you need. I think it sounds swanky/sassy/jazzy.
I'd stay away from Bublé these days. He's getting played nearly to death.

Wow that is a great son and i wish it was faster and you are correct here in the south will really make some people uncomfortable in a showcase BIG time.
Thank you for the great input.
If you guys have any more suggestions please post it.

I often hear in practice parties this foxtrot by, I believe, Kenny G which is mostly saxophone. It's not my favorite but it has a nice beat.

George Michael has a few nice 'trots on his "Songs from the Last Century" album: My Baby Just Cares For Me, Secret Love, and Where Or When.
If you're not a Fan of George, I'm sure others have covered these songs.

This reminded me...
Last spring we had a "just for charity" DWTS-type thing here, where local celebs (the mayor, judge, TV personalities, businessmen, etc.) paired up with teachers from the studios to put on a performance. One of our coaches danced a swing with her partner to Aguilera's "Candyman." They put on a silly, fun, great show, and no one minded the censored lyrics except for a very select few who just so happened to be part of the competing studio, and who lost anyways.
I'd never actually listened that closely to it anyways, and didn't even know the lyrics until they mentioned something. No one at our studio minds. Good danceable music is just good music.

Thank you so much to all of you that reply have great music suggestions. DW made a decision on the song. She picked "Big Spender - Shirley Bassey".
Here is Shirley Bassey singing the song on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQ7fQD3FiTk)
Once more thank you to all of you.

Don't forget Sinatra! :p
May be too commonly played during socials though...
And perhaps too traditional...
But still fun... :D

Sinatra's version of "Fly Me To The Moon" is a good upbeat one.
If you like Sinatra, Sirius radio has a channel that replaced "Standard Time" (now called "Siriusly Sinatra") that plays mostly his music, with a few other standard singers as well.

Yeah the whole "Premium Ballroom" series (Ballroom Swing, Ballroom Magic, Fantasy, Emotion, Sunrise, Passion ,etc) tends to have more of the jazzier foxtrots compared with either the Best of Ballroom, or Ultimate Ballroom series (which tend to shade more towards either very smooth (not American smooth, just smooth) or "ballad -esque" standards. (Either of which I love for International Standard, but for American Smooth I want the jazz-influence in my foxtrots)

Oh, before I forget, "love me like Candy" is from the CD "The Ballroom Mix 3" by Casa Musica. Don't get the original, it is too slow, I have that version also (VERY slow fox).
One of my personal faves is "Orange color Sky" by Lucia Beltrame from Ballroom Classics Five by Casa Musica..... wow, I see a trend here.

My most favorite V. Waltz is "Once upon a December", it's on one of the Ballroom CDs, but I don't remember which one. Somebody did a Showdance for Standard on OSB 2006 (Jonathan & Katusha?) or maybe it was Ben and Shalene for Smooth......ok, now I have to review the videos.
How funny, I also bought that CD just for that song! Us crazy ballroom people, huh? :o

Can anybody recommend a beautiful Waltz that isn't depressing? For some reason, they all sound so sad to me, and I want just pretty without sad! I found a couple that I like a lot, but I need more! So far my faves are "Love is Coming to Town" and "Under the bridges of Paris".
Anybody??

How about "The Patriot" on the O'Neill Brothers album "Through The Years"? It's slightly moody or nostalgic but I don't find it sad. The melody is very pretty. The first half or so is solo piano, and other strings come in for the second half.

I love "Clancy's Theme" from The Man from Snowy River soundtrack. "Rosemary Recalls" is another Waltz, but it's kinda depressing.

That's the Kenny G song that was previously mentioned. Prolly a cover or retimed, though.

Few of my favs:
Papilion from the Secret Garden
Starlight.. from the Starlight CD!
Appassionata from Ballroom Classics, but this is a "sad sounding" song
I am still trying to find a way to slow down "It is you I have loved" sung by Dana Glover.... I absolutley love that song but it is to fast for a waltz.

Really? What Kenny G (he does a lot of covers himself...) song do people think that's a cover of? I see he's done Havana (popular rumba).
I really enjoy the opening credits song to Finding Nemo as a waltz. Unfortunately, it's only 1:16. I might have seen that it exists on a ballroom CD somewhere, though . . .
Other happier waltzes:
"Papillon," Secret Garden
"Under the Bridges of Paris," John Altman (from the American version of Shall We Dance?")
I have a lot of really pretty ones, but they're under names such as "Track 11."
On the topic of anonymous non-depressing waltzes, I'm STILL trying to figure out who did an instrumental version of "Fascination." It's quite romantic. Mostly strings, can't pick out what the secondary instrument is (xylophone??), and very light drum beats keeping time. It is definitely a version of "Fascination," but I originally ripped it onto my computer as "Track 07" or something off of an old mix CD. Any help would be appreciated!
there's freeware software called audacity which allows for modifying tempo without changing keys. while i've used this software mainly to adjust tempos for certain modern songs that were otherwise too fast or slow for waltzes (ex. lizz wright "reaching for the moon", norah jones "come away with me", lifehouse "you and me", etc.), it would be a simple matter to tweak a song that is a match stylistically but is unsuitable for foxtrot due to tempo.

I like MY BABY JUST CARES FOR ME. I don't have the recording artist, but this has a nice rhythm and lift for this level of dancing.

No, I meant that the "ballroom" version is a cover of Kenny G (The Moment album). If you listen to them, not only are they different lengths, but the "ballroom" (Ballroom Passion) version is a little..."harder." Probably to emphasize the rhythm, which is a little more subtle in the Kenny G version.

Thanks! That's what I wanted to know. The version on "The Moment" doesn't seem particularly hard but I've only just listened to a short clip. Maybe it's not strict in places. Now the question is - is Kenny G's version a cover of something else? Heh.

Theme from the Molly McGuires with the Henry Mancini Orchestra. It's on the Essential Waltz collection.
Also The Shares of Swilly in the Ballroom Emotions CD.
Found a nice jazzy foxtrot: Hey Big Spender sung by Susan Kohler in her My Favorite Gentlemen CD. It's available BTW from ITunes.

Carly Simon does a good cover of the old Cole Porter tune In The Still of the Night which is good for Foxtrot.

Have you actually listened to the lyrics of this song? It's beautiful, but I don't think it could be classified as anything but sad.

I been looking for a romantic to very romantic Waltz for a friend of mine that would like to dance in a showcase with his future wife and that is been very hard to find.
To be such a beautiful dance it sure has lots of sad music.

Definitely try "Love is coming to Town" from 'The Ballroom Mix 3' 2cd set, it is beautiful, NOT SAD AT ALL, but very romantic. Best of all, since it is for a friend and his fiancee, it is sung by both a male and a female! I can guarantee your friend will love this song! :p Also try "Under the Bridges of Paris" vocal version, I'm not sure what the name of the CD is, but it has 10 waltzes and 10 quicksteps only on it. Also romantic and not sad.
You can go to danceplus.com to hear a sample of the first song (love is coming...).

For foxtrot, try "Wade in the water" by Eva Cassidy. Pino used this song in his Foxtrot performance in Super Start Festival (in 2005 I think?)
For Waltz, try "A Daisy in December" by Mick McAuley and Winifred Horan

Some of the Westies I know have frowned on my using Wade for foxtrot; they feel ownership of it for their craft. I'm pretty sure the version William and Alessandra danced to was sung by Logan Wells.
I *love* Daisy. Very pretty and sweet, and I have a soft spot for anything with a Celtic root. But I think still a bit melancholy.
BTW, you can get both those songs from the iTunes store.

Interesting . . . I can even hear some people saying that - reminds me of the arguments how west coast or swing or salsa is more this and more that.
Personally, I love hearing (and dancing to) Wade for American Foxtrot. I love Foxtrot music played for American style that has heart and soul - whether jazzy (my favorite-est), or blues-y (my favorite), or anything but the Foxtrot that I enjoy dancing in tails for International Foxtrot, or worst of all - bland Foxtrot!
