Just saw the first show on ABC, they showed the auditions and the final 14 contestants' first performance.

Yes, they have some good talents and we will see how they will develop.

I watched it, but it wasn't flooring. I won't go crazy if I miss an episode. It will be interesting to see what Bruno and Carrie Ann do with their contestants . . .

I completely forgot about it until about 40 minutes in.

My initial reaction was "If ABC can get the rights to 'Let's Get Loud,' why are there so many terrible songs on DWTS?!?!???"

Other than that, I thought it was okay.

On the plus side, I was glad the show didn't spend as much time ridiculing people who aren't good as "So You Think You Can Dance?"

On the negative side, there wasn't much in the way of impressive dancing in the part I saw. I realize this was only week 1, but on "So You Think You Can Dance?" there was plenty of super impressive dancing even during the tryouts. The group number with all 14 had very little dancing, it seemed to me, which made me wonder if this contest will really be more about singing than dancing.

I might watch it again, but I also might not.

Didn't see the show. Was "Let's Get Loud" the original or a cover?

BAsed on the performance.. I'm not sure why is called Dance War.... Sing War may be more appropiate....

A very good singer with ok dancing skills could have done it, the performance does not seem to require them to have a lot of dancing skills.

so i don't get it...do we get to vote on people? and are they choreographing or is someone else coming in every week? And it does not look too promising, but maybe as the weeks go on it will be better.

Maybe ABC cut a deal with JLo since she was on the show live to use that number. Did they use it on Dance War? I don't have television and don't know if I will bother to have anyone to tape it.

They did use the song and it was rough to hear when the different dancers took their turns singing.

Overall I was disappointed with the level of dance skill on this show but clearly Bruno and Carrie Ann aren't looking for SYTYCD-level ability. However there are a few people that stand out like the dentist that chachabelle pointed out and one blonde, whose name I can't remember, that did a back handspring, in high heels, during the debut performance of the top 14. I'm sure I'll learn their names later.

I missed the first show, can't recall why, and the concept seems bland. Tried watching the second show, but couldn't get past Bruno's and Carrie Ann's opening comments, and the hype seems so fake, too. :(

I tried to watch it this week and could only stand about 10 minutes. The screaming from the audience was annoying. When the camera panned the audience I did not see anyone cheering, so whomever is adding that horrible noise needs to stop. Doubt I will watch again.

I'll admit, it's hard to get through but since Randy Jackson's Dance Crew on MTV and Step It Up and Dance on Bravo haven't started yet, this show will act as filler for my "reality tv dance" fix. DwtS starts up again in March and So You Think You Can Dance starts up again in May. As painful as this show is to watch at times (yes, CA and Bruno, I'm talking about you two!), I'm thankful I can FF past them and see the dancing bits here and there.

Well it *is* reality, dancing, and a competition but just one where viewers can't vote because it took place several months ago. ;)

I'll be checking it out when it's on. :D

I managed to make it through the whole show on Monday and ended up thinking that the way Carrie Ann and Bruno chose their teams was fascinating based on what they said ahead of time and whom they actually chose when they got to pick. At the end it seemed like Bruno ended up with a taller and more classically attractive group and Carrie Ann ended up with some gutsy scrappers. It was like a more extended version of the leaders on Dirty Dancing picking their 3 member teams and then eliminating one at a time themselves. I thought it was interesting psychology and analysis of the impact the singing and dancing are going to have on the audience voting.

Bruno and Carrie Ann were on Jay Leno the other night. It was something! They showed a video of Carrie Ann with a nearly shaved head pole-dancing topless! And Bill Maher, the other guest, was making constant gay jokes at Bruno and Bruno was shooting back. Jay totally lost control of the segment. Dance War got very little attention.

Yep, a bunch of bloggers pointed that out after the first episode. He's actually one of my favorites among the guys on the show. For the women, and looking from a dance-only perspective, I really like Kelsey.

Agreed. There's only one person I really like on Carrie Ann's team, overall, and I think she'll have a fight on her hands as team captain. Bruno won the UK version last August and the way his team looks now, I think he'll be very tough competition for Carrie Ann.

Casey

Was Bruno against Carrie Ann for the UK version, also? What happens? Do the audience votes eliminate 2 people a show or what?
And speaking of Zack the dentist (or dental student?) and Julianne, Julianne was on Entertainment Tonight last night - she really seems to light up when she talks about how much she loves country music - I hope that doesn't mean she's going to abandon even the DWTS dancing.

No, Bruno was up against Arlene Phillips, one of the judges on Strictly Come Dancing. Derek Hough was the choreographer for Bruno's team.

Thanks so much for the info, Beto. That's what Derek was choreographing! There were ads in places, but I didn't realize it was in England.

Do you know what happened to J Lo's dance show that was on MTV? It went for 5 or so episodes and then just disappeared.

You're welcome.

J. Lo's show was boring and kind of odd. It seemed more like a documentary and not a competition. Though it was kinda nice to see Blake McGrath (season 1 of So You Think You Can Dance) again.

I didn't see this show, so maybe I'm missing something important here . . . Based on this description, how can we expect
(a) young people to be tolerant and
(b) young males to accept dancesport when a tv personality goes there??

rant continues
On DF we occasionally get someone blaming the nameless 'society' for those attitudes, this makes me think that some specific individuals help or hinder . . .

Well, if it's any consolation , Maher was directing his jokes personally at Bruno, not at dancesport in general. Bruno wasn't having it and shot back at Maher every time. It was kind of a fiasco.

Sorry I can't help w/ your current quest, but thanks for solving the Dancelife problem.
It seems like Wikipedia is the new Google -what great articles! - I really liked Dancelife because it showed the dancers rehearsing and having real life problems - though Jersey's car breaking down and Nolan not having a car were a bit too much real life. Blake was certainly on top of things in that arena. But thanks so much for the link - it seems like the last episode was really a season finale, so the show didn't just disappear the way I thought it did.

Carrie Ann was talking to Jimmy Kimmel about her early career on a segment showed on the tv guide channel. She was some kind of pop star in Japan and then had the shaved head and did the pole dancing when she was in Madonna's group of dancers.

Wikipedia can be tricky though. It's not always accurate so be mindful of that when spending time (lots and lots of time) on there. It's quite addictive too when you first stumble across it. :D

I don't know if I can take more of Drew's hosting.... He annoys me to no end when he opens his mouth. Already on DWTS I could not listen to him but he only filled in and there was hope for Samantha to come back.

This show does not cut it for me. I enjoy the dancing itself but there is not much dancing - way too much repetition of the previous week, unnecessary talk and fake hype. Next week I might record the show and fast forward everything to just watch the dancing.

That's the general consensus here I believe. Oh and I never watch the show live as I'm not home plus I like fast-forwarding the boring/over-hyped bits to get to the dancing.

Between the camera operator sleeping on the job and the technical problems with the microphones, it's getting more and more painful to watch; not to mention the incessant screams from the audience and the focus on sexuality (open-shirted guys, ladies wearing garters). Call me a prude, but..... You know the purpose is to get hormonal viewers to call and vote. Plus I'm just not that impressed with either the singing or the dancing overall. A few nice moments, but otherwise.... eh. That series "Fame" from a few years ago did it better (though what happened to the winner of that, hmmmm? He was really cool!). It's a shame.

Is there going to be another season of Dancing With the Stars?

I don't know what happened w/ the camera operator, but in the hip hop number by Carrie Ann's team, Chris's mike didn't work - that definitely wasn't good since he has one of the best voices.

Beto
01-24-2008, 01:53 PM
Agreed about the camera operator. Also, you'd think the stage hands or sound techs would've checked the microphone packs beforehand to make sure the batteries were working. Maybe Chris bumped his against something?

On another note, I think CA's team needs to lose Bradley as a team member since his voice isn't all that good when he's stressed. The finale number on the show, with both teams performing Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now", suffered when he had his part.

Beto
01-29-2008, 11:35 AM
Okay, I take back what I said about Bradley. His voice was on last night and his dance moves (that forward aerial, his air time) impressed me. I think he must have some modern or ballet training because he was getting pretty high up there. Reminded me of Danny Tidwell from SYTYCD.

Regarding the outcome of the voting, I was shocked that Bruno's team had to cut a member but glad that they kept Kelsey. Granted, her voice wasn't any better than Charity's but I'm looking at her as a dancer and not a singer.

and123
01-29-2008, 11:52 AM
I thought Carrie Ann's team was better than Bruno's last night, but really thought she'd have to send someone home after last week's snafus. I was hoping Bruno would send Kelsey home until I saw her perform/sing side by side with Charity. Charity didn't come across well at all at the end. Not really paying too much attention to the details of this competition.... watched it all last night b/c Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was a repeat :p .... does the team with the last member standing "win"? Theoretically an entire team could be eliminated.

I'm Still Dancing
01-29-2008, 08:41 PM
Beto, I have to disagree about Bradley. I still think he has an awful voice. I may be looking at it differently since I am in musical theatre and I am used to being around people that can sing and dance at equally amazing levels.

And Bradley does not NOT cut it as far as dancing. Though he is the best dancer out of both groups.

As for triple threats, I honestly think that Zack MIGHT be the only one that has any potential to be a professional.

I just think the rest of the kids are very mediocre overall performers.

I'll defer to you on this one because of your credentials. Last week I absolutely hated Bradley because of his voice. I kept waiting for him to screw up last night but it seemed as though he got by. Maybe that was intentional on the part of the vocal coach and choreographer to have him sing something less challenging to cover his shortcomings? Don't know.

As for triple threats, I honestly think that Zack MIGHT be the only one that has any potential to be a professional.
Agree with you about Zack. He has that "IT" factor that you want in a performer. Bruno was smart to pick him as the rock or the core to build his team around.

And Bradley does not NOT cut it as far as dancing. Though he is the best dancer out of both groups.

I just think the rest of the kids are very mediocre overall performers.

Agree about the other performers. Some are good or decent in one area and then god awful in another. I can't believe the talent pool was so, um, shallow, for this show when it was being cast last summer.

From the start of the show I knew Zack was the best dancer, but I always like rooting for the underdog. I want Qis and Phillip to stay on as far as the guys go just because their entertaining. Qis and his sports and Phil with his dumb hats, the show is pretty funny at points.

Alyssa was eliminated. She kind of did herself in when Carrie Ann asked her to help the other 2 women w/ their latin dancing and she went off to a bar by herself and said this was a competition and she had to focus on herself. She must have helped them because they thanked her, and when she gave her farewell speech, she said that in spite of what the audience might have seen, she was totally supportive of her team and they deserved to win. The psychology of Carrie Ann during the elimination was fascinating - she kept Qis because he said she should eliminate him if she had to lose someone - you could just hear her brain and feel her emotions as she went through them Alyssa was left by default.
