Can anyone please recommend me some nice music for Viennese Waltz?
The first obvious choice was Strauss, but now I want to try something else for a change, preferably something fast.

Hi Lonedar! Welcome. :D I'm sure some DF members can help. I have a couple romatic songs in 6/8 time (liek Morning has Broken by Cat Stevens) that I like to dance VW to, but I'm sure others can recomend better stuff for you. :D Good luck. And welcome.

Here are two relatively contemporary pieces (with Amazon links) I really like:

"Mal Di Luna" by Summer from the album "Summer"(you have to have a good ear for the beat, though) -

and

13. Jazz Suite No. 2 (Suite For Promenade Orchestra): VI. Waltz 2
Dmitry Shostakovich, The Jazz Album - Royal Concertgebouw
(you might recognize this from the movie "Eyes Wide Shut")

Thanks for the warm greetings and recommendations.

I got those pieces of music and brought them to school yesterday (I'm taking dance lessons at my school).
My partner loved it.. really nice. Thanks again.

Sorry I didn't see this before.

You want standard-speed Viennese waltz? Try Piano Man by Billy Joel, Amelie waltz. My personal favorite so far is Erin Shore by The Coors.

Practice waltz (Contra waltz): The Rainbow Connection (from The Muppet Movie), Open Arms by Journey, Once Upon a December by Deana Carter.

Just make sure whatever you have it is in strict tempo. A lot of orchestral versions are faster than 60 measures per minute, and that would make dancing a bit more difficult than you'd want. "Ballroom Fantasy" (Casaphon) has an excellent set of VW's that I overplay. :)

Of course, I have plenty of Christmas music in VW speed...

I guess if you want more contemporary versions of V. Waltz music, my personal fav's are Waltz for the Moon (from "Final Fantasy VIII") and Amas Veritas (from the movie "Practical Magic"). I think the electric acoustic version of the song "I Will Always Return" by Bryan Adams is V. Waltz-able one too, but not an excellent choice.

My personal favorite so far is Erin Shore by The Coors.

Oooh, aren't the Corrs great. Never thought Erin Shore has a V. Waltz rhythm. Thanks etchuck. :D

finally a topic that I can really help on.

I still cry when I hear this song, and it's a song that very few people have actually heard.

It Is You (I Have Loved) - Dana Glover on the 2001 soundtrack to Shrek.

Regarding changing the tempo on existing songs: There are programs available to download that are sophisicated enough to slow down and speed up tempo on songs without changing them terribly. I don't know where hubby found it, but he was able to adjust the tempo of the song to something us beginners could handle, and burned the CD. We used it for our first dance song.

It's available on the web-- he says it was a DART program :?: If anyone is interested let me know.... I can look into it further.

No, I have the movie so I've heard it a bit. ;) It's also on the aforementioned Ballroom Fantasy CD (Casaphon) as a regular standard waltz rather than VW. The vocalist actually does a decent job covering.

Waltz for the Moon (VW) is also on the Ballroom Fantasy CD... you note I like that particular CD a ton.

I'll credit the Vintage Dance connoisseur here in Durham with pointing Erin Shore to me (not to mention the slower contra waltzes that I like to play as VW practices). I admit I love of many Celtic-style pieces, but that particular one... people just feel like they've had an uplifting experience after it (it's that crescendo and drum cadenza(?) two-thirds of the way in). I'm not as big a fan of the Coors' more pop stuff because I have to figure out how to dance to any of it.

That being said, the other "favorite" VW is "Oh Jean" by the Proclaimers... if you don't mind dancing VW for something like 6 minutes. Or some of the lyrics. ;)

Now that makes me want to plan a St. Patrick's Day dance... our club is doing an Equinox dance instead. Oh well.

Billy Joel, "She's Always a Woman." But if you really want something new and different--"I'm in Love With My Car," by Queen, from their "Night at the Opera" album. The tune rocks. Only your costume would have to be a greasy mechanic's suit, and you'd need some huge chrome car in the center of the floor.

In case you're not familiar with the song, here is a selection from the lyrics:

I'm in love with my car--
Gotta feel for my automobile.
When my hand's on your grease gun,
Oh it's like a disease, son....

Best,

Genesius

First off, I've been trying to find a discussion forum where I can ask about music and I feel like I've hit on something here. Anyhoo, to add to the conversation, a very fast vienese waltz that is quite lovely is Ben Folds Five's "Smoke" off the Forever and Ever Amen album.

I want to get more info about what dances go with some of my favorite songs. Is there a forum here that is specificially for that? Can we start one? Thanks a bundle,

CAB

i heard an amazing VW this weekend at MIT, but the DJ wouldn't tell me what it was called (for what reason, i have no idea... he was actually kind of rude about it). though ms. mcraven apparently also shared my ignorance on the title, so that makes me feel a little better about it.
