Hello again. What is this called? They do it in this video starting at 00:10 and ending at 00:12 (seconds). I see lots of pairs doing it, so I bet it has a name. For 8 counts, she swivels around him while he paws the floor on 2's & 4's.

The video is "New Year's Dance Extravaganza 2003 Champions Just Dance Lindy Hop" at http://www.stevedandrebecca.com/performances.asp

If I got the right moment in the video, he's leading and she's doing swivels.

They are called "Switches".

Now that I've looked closer at faster dances, I've seen variants. In slower tempo songs (approximately 120 bpm), she points both toes to the direction she's going, swivels away, sorta hops (or steps & slides) to the direction & lands aiming toes back toward the direction. In faster 200+ tempos, she just swivels in one place for a few beats. I saw one doing an opposing heel/toe swivel that gives her a few inches left & right in fast tempo songs too.

Thanks for the responses. I'll call the slower more detailed one Switches and the fast, stationary one swiveling unless I got it all wrong :)

Damon's right. They're switches. I had it wrong.

BTW Every follow I watch has her own styling for switches as well as swivels. They are two different moves. And the exact placement of knees, toes, feet angles will be different depending on the look and styling of the dancer. And the lead. And the tempo. And the song........

To distincuate (inside joke)...

Start over.

To distinguish between swivels and switches: I'm gonna try this and rely on Damon to fix my mistakes. (I hate being wrong, but since I'd rather dance it right than name it right and since I can dance both of these moves, who cares if I goof here?)

Switches are led circularly. If the circular movement ain't there you aren't doing switches.

Swivels are lead-independent. A follow can swivel her 1-2 (for example) at will, as long as she's following (ready and able to move when moved by her lead).

Is there a universal way to lead someone to do swiveling or switches for a few beats? I was thinking that it's just something the girl does, and the guy can notice it and leave her to do it 2, 4 or 8 counts. Is this one of those things where the guy says "do switches" verbally? Is the guy supposed to choose the direction of the switches and steer it?

It also looks like it's important as to which side the guy slides on first/last so he can back step into the next move.

Swivels the follower does on their own.

Switches the leader leads.
He turns his body to the right on 8 making sure to ground the follower, and then turns to the left on one again grounding the follower. From here he is doing various forms of footwork that turn him clockwise and brings the follower around the hub of the wheel with him as she does her kick-ball-change step.

Takes about a minute or two to teach, but explaining online is much harder.
