This comes under the heading of being so unbelievable that "you could not make it up".

This report from the Daily Mail, a major UK daily newspaper shows the power that the "Health and Safety" Brigade now wield.

Where do you think this will lead us, perhaps new rules for competition dancing on carpet etc????

Doesn't carpet cause respiratory problems and mold?

also love this comment:

am entirely in agreement with this decision and think that ice rinks should also be carpeted over - after all it can be terribly slippy out there!

Actually they are wrong. Karate, or any martial arts, would be horrble on carpet as well. You need to be able to spin on the ball of your foot and do quick changes of direction! It may be gentler to land on but it is still HORRIBLE to move across.

I was going to write the same: karate is not good on a soft surface, one needs to have good contact with the ground in order to get a good strength in one's stance. It's one fundamental principle in martial arts.

All of the martial art schools I have ever been in have had either a dense carpet for arts that train barefoot but tile or wood for arts that train with shoes. None were schools that teach grappling arts

For years I have trained barefoot on wood, or mats. (I originally bought shoes but hated them and wear them for street wear instead.) I have never ever seen a carpeted dojo/dojang or competition.

Carpeted floors for karate = sprained toes. (Trust me!)

That carpet wasn't so bad. It was extremely dense however, which may be what makes all the difference. I never trained on mats except during wrestling season in high school but I didn't train in arts that did a lot of throws or grappling

How about rug burn blisters on the bottom of your feet and toes, from spinning on carpet!!

Perhaps now Supadance and the other dance shoe manufacturers will consider introducing a range of sequinned, high heeled carpet slippers for the UK market.

Regarding the rest of the ladies outfit, I think there need be no real change as from what we see on TV most of them probably wear more in bed than on the dance floor, expecially in Latin competitions.

There is this weird phenomenon in the salsa world where people will actually dance on the carpet next to the dance floor on purpose.

I think it started out at certain congresses where the floor was packed and there was still room on the carpet, but since it's so much harder to spin and glide on carpet it started to be a look-at-me kind of thing where certain people would purposely dance on the carpet to demonstrate prowess in the face of handicaps. Or something.

Maybe those oldsters just need to up their game. Or something!

Given the only serious injury I've ever done myself dancing involved turning on carpet (dislocated and fractured my right knee and it's never been the same since) and I cannot imagine doing any spinning martial arts moves on it without something similar happening, I can only say....d'oh!

Perhaps they can leave the floors as they are and anyone worrying about it being slippery can wear carpet on their shoes.

We have trained barefoot on wood, that's the best, and only occasionally on mats (tatami). That's better to land on yes, but they are hard to keep together in the long run. We even used to have a beginning ritual of cleaning the floor with rags for better floor contact and less blisters.

Seems to me this desicion isn't that well thought through if they write things like what they wrote.
